I was an Uber driver and picked up and dropped off at The Dominion a few times. The most notable trip was picking up Kawhi Leonard from the airport and dropping him off at The Dominion. This was in January right before he was traded to Toronto. I picked him up at about 1:30 am from Signature at the airport. He was pretty quiet throughout the entire trip. Sad thing is he didn't even tip.

So, they are here part-time. Typical couple that travel for months?$120 electric not in summer, $120 gas. Compare to California without Austin summers. Older house in Cali. Why interview part-timers? O health insurance costs. Concierge health care, lol. Auto Insurance in Austin is not cheap. What about rent or mortgage? Higher end in Texas.

Some thoughts from a long-time Austinite: You can buy a house if you have $200,000 cash down. Fact. Restaurants are the same price as in any big city. Austin's overcrowded. Any music not in a small club is $100 minimum, unlike in the old days. Now you have to pay to park everywhere. You have to stand in long lines to get barbecue Traffic is good compared to California? That's what you compare it to? It's bad. Most importantly, the friendly, cool vibe is being ruined by transplants who want to change the culture, rather than blend in. Lots of concrete now, and the electric utilities are extremely high. So many more people scowling rather than smiling. Manners are no longer a thing here for a high percentage of transplants. The cost of living is very high. All of the artists A lot of artists and musicians who made Austin cool are leaving or have already left due to the high cost of living. Many old businesses that had character and uniqueness are being evicted by speculators and carpetbaggers. You can barely see the beautiful sky downtown or our Capitol. The parks and lakes are overcrowded, as is pretty much any event. Free events exist but are rare now. Too many people and crime is up.

Austin is still small in my opinion . I think its barely about 1 millon people. The traffic isn’t bad. Compared to larger cities. But I have lived in Larger cities like Houston and LA. Its better than sitting in traffic for 5 hours. But yes very very hot and humid.

Gawd I miss the city I grew up in. Getting around on the city bus for a dollar a day, free activities everywhere. We didn't pay for the trail of lights or the botanical gardens. Watering holes had water! Good food wasn't over priced. People were friendly and welcoming. 6th street was safe and so much fun! There was just a vibe to the city that is completely lost.

Great video. I walked a client’s dog for years in Zilker. It was very sad how the neighborhood changed, old houses were torn down…cookie cutter duplexes and fourplexes took their place. I’ve been here since ‘04, my girlfriend and I are planning on moving in the next few years.

Part of it is: people didn't necessarily choose Austin, large firms choose it as a Texas location that would be acceptable to "talented" employees. Highly paid, creative types who want big city, college town amenities usually with outdoor activities. (California tech firms really didn't rush to Amarillo, Lubbock or Wichita Falls. A Texas site had to be somewhat Ann Arbor, Palo Alto or even Brooklyn like.) Transplants who were willing to try Austin because of UT and image might be disappointed. And when those firms started to lay people off, there was just no reason to stay.

Longtime Austinite here. Agree with everything you said. One by one, the cool “Austiny” places are being replaced by soulless “real estate developments.” And it’s true that there has always been an undercurrent vibe that avoids growth. The moniker “Live Music Capital of the World” is no longer true. SXSW and ACL are echoes of another time. We can hope that some of the quirkiness survives in the new places that being created. Austin Playhouse, Q2 stadium, and Rock Rose at the Domain are all steps in the right direction…

I left Austin in January after living there for more than ten years, it took me a month to shake that always looking over my shoulder and on guard feeling. Austin is just unsafe. Between the drug zombies, the cops that barely do their jobs, the heat, the bugs, the cost, the traffic and the politicians who would let everyone die just to score some culture war points..... Austin is 100 percent not worth it and I wish I could get that time back.
