I am a retired public and environmental health scientist and a kayak fishing enthusiast. I was born and raised in a small town in southwest Wisconsin. As a young person I spent much of my time during the summer months fishing for small mouth bass in the Fever River near my home town of Benton. My love of the outdoors and fishing led me to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where I pursued an education in fisheries management and aquatic ecology. I worked in the public and environmental health field for more than 42 years. In my retirement I have enjoyed spending time with my family camping, hiking and fishing.

We come to Wisconsin every year for hockey tournaments. I fill my trunk with spotted cow. Crossing state lines, but it's worth it!! Don't tell the Feds!!!
@@HIFI1965 I hear yeah. I have family in Iowa and I frequently bring Spotted Cow and Totally Naked to them. New Glarus Brewery is quite the place.
Great mod. I just got a trolley and thought it wasn't very steady but this will fix it thanks to you 🙏.
Do you lose the folding capability? Great video!
@@theruralindependent yes. It no longer folds
Move that cart forward under the seat and u will lighten the lifting and pulling load.
@@daleweaver2558 I actually did just that shortly after I made the video. I actually put a note in the video description section that mentioned that as well. It really does make a big difference. Thank you for your advice.
You could have just zip tied it to the crate, and be done in 30 seconds.
@@jroddy1 I actually tried that but it wasn’t very stable. The cup holder wouldn’t stay perpendicular. I’ll admit I tend to overkill a bit. Thanks for the advice though.
Hello George. Thank you for the video. I am getting supplies to modify my fishing kayak cart. Just one question: what is the length of the one and a half by 2-in boards?
@@LoveFishing51 It’s 16 inches long. I hope it works for you. I recently sold my Yukon Angler kayak and bought a Crescent Primo kayak. I’m 73 years old and the Yukon was getting a bit heavy to load in my truck by myself. The Crescent is only 55 pounds and it’s a foot shorter. It’s much more manageable and it’s an easier padding Kayak. Unfortunately, I had to modify my cart again to match the hull configuration of the Crescent. However, the cart is now working great and I made the changes.
@georgebowman3051 Thank you, George! I really appreciate it! And good for you... still hitting the water at 73! I hope I'm that lucky! Thanks again, champ!
Great video. I knew about this mod, but wasn't sure EXACTLY how to do it. Thanks to you and your clear instructions, now I do 😊.
You are welcome!
Great idea..👍🏽
Thanks Joe! I used the cart today.
Thanks. I have one like yours and I will be making the modifications. Thanks again.
You are welcome!
Looks ok, I will try it. thanks for tip
You are welcome. I will probably cover the bunks on my cart with indoor/outdoor carpeting this year to add a bit of cushioning. Have a great year out on the water.
Thank you for a very niçe no b.s. video!
a hug straight from Brazil, like the video
Thank you!
I've never seen your channel before, and see (at this time) you only have 284 subs. Dude, you put together a hell of a video. Super helpful, loved all the camera angles. Great audio and super informative. I'm surprised you don't have a larger following online. Thanks for all your upgrades, i'm gonna copy a few for my Yukon!
Thank you. It’s been fun playing with my Yukon. I really enjoy building things. My grandson was a wizard with his design and 3D printer and he’s helped me quite a bit. He’s off a the University of Wisconsin now so he’s no longer as active. Thanks again for your comments. Let me know if you have any questions.
How about selling your your grandsons adapter !
not a bad idea. If I choose to follow suit, I would probably go with a 2 x 2 covered with a 1/2 tube of foam or rubber pipe covers.
Bravo. A $2 solution to a $50 problem. 😊
Thank you!
Thank you for the very helpful video!
Put the damn cart in the middle of the yak !
Yes I have after gaining some experience. It didn’t take me long after I posted the video to get this feedback. I thought I posted a note to that effect in the video description and in response to an earlier viewer. Thanks for your comment. You are spot-on!
Appreciate the good audio. Also, if you center the cart under the center of the kayak you will carry less weight.
You are absolutely correct. I have made some adjustments in placement based on my personal experience. It’s not quite in the center close. Good observation on your part.
Nice video
Thank you!
Dude you got the best cart ozark is great just bought one I have the same yak too but I have the same problem
The wood bunks should do the trick. Good luck!
This is exactly what I was looking for thank you for sharing
You are welcome! Thank you for the kind words.
I just bought a glob. What’s the name of the wheel dolly that helps cart the kayak on land but then mounts on the kayak when you’re fishing?
You are probably thinking about the Boonedox Groovy Landing Gear track kit. It attaches behind the kayak seat and then swings out of the way when on the water. You can find it on Amazon but it cost close to $350 USD.
good idea
Thank you. I’m working on some tweaks now.
Thanks for posting! I elected to use 1 1/2” PVC for mine and it worked great. Thanks again!!!
Excellent! I’m glad the PVC works for you. I may try that myself when I upgrade my kayak. I’m working on that now.
Excellent instructional video! Very well done. I’m going to attempt to make a similar mount for my little pond prowler boat. This was super helpful. Thank you for taking the time to produce this and share.
You are welcome! Good luck with your Pond Prowler.
What have I become? Am I truly that old? Am I really sitting here contemplating returning the mount I just got yesterday? Man I thought my 40s would be different lol
You’re not old! You just realize that you can invest in more important fishing gear than an overpriced mount. Like I said in my video, I’d rather spend my money on a nice 7 foot St. Croix bait casting rod. I’m 72 and I’ve always enjoyed making things and if I can save a buck along the way it’s even better.
2 years later your Walmart cart is $55 and similar ones on Amazon for the same price.
Holy cow the prices have gone up significantly.
Very good patent.
Thank you.
Many regards from Greece
Thank you. I would love to visit Greece someday. It is such a beautiful country.
love the vid man
Thanks. Much appreciated.

O my kayak I don’t have a track. Is there any place I can buy a track to put on my kayak so I can put that mount on it
Absolutely! You can get a surface mount track at most kayak or paddle sports shops locally. Amazon has a many. Yak gear and YakAttack have nice ones in various sizes to fit almost every kayak. Good luck!
Great video thank you But I was really hoping you would take it around the block So we could see if it was Is good for long Halls A dog sitting on it would have been perfect But enjoyed the video thank you
Thank you for your comments. I do have a field test video where my grandson and I took our kayaks about 1/4 mile on a rusted trail through woods and a grassy area. The carts performed very well fully loaded (minus the dog though). Check it out in my channel.
Thank you for sharing, hope this modification works with my Aquaglide inflatable kayak. Very smart
Thank you. I hope it works for you as well.
Great video and very well thought. Does the flag pole actually float with the pipe insulation? Have you tested it?
I did test it and does float. However, I recently switched to a higher lumen flash light and haven’t tested it yet. I will have to do a float test in my bath tub. I’ll let you know if it floats.
@@georgebowman3051 awesome, thank you.
Looks great! I am hoping to copy some of your innovations!
Thanks Steven.
Nice setup , I’ve used nylon cutting board material for several up grades . Your idea probably saved me $50. On a mount , thanks
Outstanding! I’m glad it works for you.
I've been picking up used Jogger strollers and bike trailers for free to $20, then converting them to Kayak carts for my yaks. They rock. It take an hour and they are free.
Outstanding idea! I may try that approach if I upgrade my kayak. I’ve been thinking about going with an Ascend 12 footer or a Bonafide this year. We’ll have to see if I can convince my wife that I need a new yak.
@@georgebowman3051 Our conversation inspired me to make some videos, including this one about the jogger stroller. I didn't know how to feed you the link, otherwise. Not trying to promote on your video, please feel free to delete after you grab the link kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6qC3NayfanPfbQ.html
I would love to see a more in-depth look at how you set up the fish finder. I have the same yak and was thinking of adding one
Hi Patrick, Let me see what I can put together. I sort of followed some guidance I got from another KZread channel that had a 4 part series on the Striker plus 4. I’ll try to find the link. I used a through the hull transducer setup. I’m probably going to rig a scupper mount before spring. I had to reduce sensitivity on the Garmin because of the hull. It worked well but not perfect. I think the Striker was a great choice given my experience this last summer.
@@georgebowman3051 thanks , appreciate it
Finally, someone who addressed the same problem I was experiencing. I will be modifying mine also now.
Excellent!
Thanks for the new project.
You are welcome.
That's what I need since Amazon keeps on delaying shipment overpriced mount from a " well-known" kayak accessories company
For the life of me, I couldn’t justify spending so much money on the commercial mounts. I think you will be happy with a diy mount. The Amazon shipping delay may actually be a blessing. Good luck.
Well done sir
Thank you!
Excellent George!
Thank you very much.
Nice work, looks like a good setup!
Thank you. I just need to get more comfortable using all of the features of the Striker. I’ll be better prepared for the 2023 fishing season.
Your transducer will leak
Pretty good video... But, what did you do to lawn....looks great....what's secret?
Thank you. The good news is the wheels are fairly wide and they didn’t damage the lawn. The cart rolls over the ground pretty well. It even traveled well over some pretty rough trails with tree roots and small potholes. I’m pretty satisfied.
I bought 2-wheels ($5@) from Harbor Freight and a threaded rod ($3) from Home Depot. I put the threaded rod thru a sprinkler pipe so not to scratch the kayak and then I used an old bungee cord to keep the kayak on the wheels. Not as pretty as yours, but it has worked for 18-years.
That’s great. You should post a video on how you built it. I did consider making a cart from PVC pipe and harbor freight wheels. However, many reported the pvc cart didn’t hold up. It sounds like you have a better design.
@@georgebowman3051 I wasn't clear. The threaded metal rod or axle supports the weight of the kayak thru the Harbor Freight wheels. I had a 5/8-inch diameter rod laying around, but I'm pretty sure a 1/2-inch diameter rod would work. The plastic sprinkler pipe covers the threaded rod to protect the bottom of the kayak. The total part list was, threaded rod, 2-nuts, 2-washers, 2-wheels, plastic sprinkler pipe and bungee cord. I can barely use a cellphone, so a video is out of the question. Also, I duct taped the bungee cord to the axle, so I don't lose or misplace the bungee cord.
I am sorry you misunderstood me. You were quite clear about the threaded Rod. What I meant is that many of the DIY PVC carts use a threaded rod but the physical support for the kayak hull is made of PVC pipe and that’s the part that breaks. I’m just trying to figure out how your sprinkler pipe matches up with the hull of your kayak. I think your cart seem pretty neat but I can’t quite picture how it attaches with bungees without rocking. I still think you could make a pretty decent KZread video to show how it all goes together. You certainly can’t beat 18 years of durability. I’d love to see it.
Looks strong enough to stand on the holder!
Thanks! It is pretty strong.
