Still use my dad's star from the 70's, neither one of us wanted to upgrade it, so I still just have a 150-watt clamp light next to the lube body. It is actually very effective. Mine is set up to dump the bullets into a shallow angled ramp and slide into a wood box with a piece of carpet in the bottom.

I can NOT put even a 2" stick of lubr in, much less the full 4" stick. The piston/spring assembly cap is INCHES above the thread area. Pushing down wit all I have I can get the cap to hit the threads. But one needs a second person to thread the cap on. ???? Any ideas? Thw brass screw on the left side.....clean out screw. heat the base and pull out the lube somehow? May have something that got in my lube?? I'm at a loss here. Great job on the video

There is confusion with the S&W M-17 and M-18 4 inch barrel blue steel .22 LR handguns. The M17 I have I bought in 1987 new . It has a 4 inch non tapered heavy barrel with a front ramp for adjustable sights that is just like a S&W M-10's .38 heavy barrel if that gun had the front ramp which it does not as a M-10 is a fixed sight model and is 38 caliber. This M-17 is a heavy gun much heavier then a .38 The M-18 S&W 4 in .22 LR in blue steel is called The .22 Combat Masterpiece they have a lighter tapered barrel with a front ramp for adjustable sights which is just like the barrel on a S&W M-15 .38 Combat Masterpiece except it is bored and rifled for .22 caliber not .38. The taper is not as much on a M-10 4 inch fixed sight with tapered barrel as the M-18 and M-15 have the ramp front sight and flat surface on the top of the barrel that has a mat finish which the M-10 tapered barrel 4 inch guns do not have So the difference between a S&W 4 inch M-17 .22 later model and a S&W 4 inch M-18 .22 is the heavy barrel on the M-17 and a tapered barrel on the M-18. The M-18 was not being made when I bought my M-17 in 1987 , S&W made M-17 4 inch .22LR guns for a while in the late 80's early 90's then stopped. My gun is marked M-17-5 from the S&W factory. What can I say the 4 inch S&W M17 M18 and M-34 all are very fun to shoot , accurate high-quality guns that are only going up in value . All of them are favorites and pricy today . The M-17 I have has almost no recoil at all due to its weight , off a sandbag rest or against a tree it is very accurate with many standard .22 LR cartridges

The 4" barrel version is the model 18, the mod. 17 is 6".

Unless you bought it new in 1990. The model 18 by then had been dropped, and the model 17 was offered in 4 and 6 inch barrel lengths. I realize they are the exact same gun, but that is how S&W marked them until they were finally discontinued years later.

@@BrokenBarBox The 4'' barrel revolver that you're referring to is the 617 (stainless steel). They (S&W) never made a 4'' blued .22lr six shot revolver, named as 17.

By Typical Accuracy I mean what an average shooter shooting double action standing can do with these revolvers. Shooting single action makes for a better score , as does steadying off a tree . Both guns were sighted in sitting at the bench on a Bulls Bag and would group to point of aim within 1/2 inch at 7 yards with 3 shot groups

Be careful when pulling the piston out of your lube is cold, or better yet, warm it up first.. I've got a nice scar just below my mouth from from yanking out it and getting hit with the hollow end of the threaded rod. Thankfully it didn't break my teeth. That being said, these machines are the best, and will outlive you. Mine has to be at least 35 or 40 years or so old and still works great. You get what you pay for from Magma Engineering.

Elmer Keith 1899 -1984 Was a U.S western cowboy, big game hunter , hunting guide , rancher and gun writer who did much of the research that created the Remington .44 magnum. He was a major advocate of heavy cast .44 bullets shot at higher velocities for hunting who designed the Lyman 429421 .44 caliber cast bullet . Elmer Keith also was involved in the creation of the earlier .357 magnum.

Sorry for the video quality I used the free Windows Movie Maker and that's how it came out in WMV mode. Use full screen to see details that get cut off on the small screen You do not have to remove the top punch in all situations when you change dies but it makes it easier and only takes a minute. There is a heavy casting on this machine that is strong , the weak link is exactly that, a 90 degree link that is part of the leverage linkage that the handle attaches to. The link is made of cast material made to break before something else will break. You can see a fine line where the handle screws on to the L shaped link which has some casting marks. I have received very good customer service from Lyman one of Americas oldest reloading equipment providers ,perhaps the oldest today , a leader in reloading and bullet casting equipment made in the USA

As The Magma instructions state record any distances of the top punch set ups with your calibers and you can reset them back to the same . Sorry for some of the video quality it was all good when it came from my digital camera, if you know what's up let us all know. I used the free Microsoft Movie Maker software to make it. As far as interchangeability of parts with the Star both are the same but some Star machines had die cast lower housings .The Magma Star is cast aluminum. Some very early Star lube sizers had cast iron castings . Check with Magma Engineering for more details
