I don't know if I would call an all-strings ensemble an orchestra

Brilliant orchestra. This march is one of Sousa's messier compositions. It's different, but lacks that memorable melody character of his other marches that registers immediately in one's memory. Here it seems he's snipped bits from those other marches, but the ensemble doesn't work so well.

I agree with most comments, and it makes it apparent why a director is important. A lot of what’s wrong should have been noticed by the director and fine tuned over all the rehearsals. If it needs to be more staccato, he needs to *tell* them and work on it, for example. Faster tempo, of course, should be under his control, too. (Though when I was in chorus, our director practically broke his arm trying to get them to speed up sometimes.)

I played this at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, we got it up to speed, and the reaction we got was what you would expect at a professional symphony orchestra concert, AND we were concert orchestra, the lowest ranking group. This is one of the best pieces I've ever played.
