UChicago Social Sciences

UChicago Social Sciences

With a commitment to free and open inquiry, our scholars take an interdisciplinary approach to research that draws from local and international sources, experimental and theoretical approaches; qualitative and quantitative methods; computational models and pencil-based notebooks. Their work transforms the way we understand the world, advancing fields of study, and often creating new ones. Generating new knowledge for the benefit of present and future generations, UChicago research has had an impact around the globe, leading to revolutionary theories of economics and tools to produce reliably excellent urban schooling.

14:50 if its not valuable, all the other stuff doesn't matter. Wow, it's like the highest degree term in a math equation. it dominates and the rest don't really matter.

This is journalism 101. You have to know and write for your specific reader. How many times did a newsroom editor ask me why a reader would care? Why they would take the time to read my story instead of other stories?

Enjoyed this and also disagreed with his comments about journalists. Good journalists ask questions and research and get their subjects to think, and then they think as they write and weave divergent facts and points or view into a cohesive whole. Maybe he’s referring to a 30 second TV news crime story, but his assessment doesn’t apply to a Sunday front page or magazine story.

Anyone who thinks China is the aggressive one is someone who doesn't even know where China and the US are on a world map, and where the American military bases are in western Pacific.

Has Aristotle been preserved? His dialogues are lost and the context of his writing is foreign to us. Not even Aristotle is perfectly preserved

I’m a bit confused. Why does this topic of effective writing apply to graduate students specifically? What writing to which readers is the problem?

this video focused on writing in a clear, organized, and valuable manner for readers. McEnerney's insights into words that create tension, such as "anomaly," "inconsistent," and "however," were indeed interesting. Thanks a lot.

52:25 "The relationship between the suppliers and users of knowledge to the knowledge they supply and use, that is your relationship to your own knowledge, is now tending and will increasingly tend to assume the form already taken by the relationship of commodity producers and consumers to the commodities they produce and consume. That is the form of value."
