Looking at the stories of Mario Party, I realize what’s happened. Newer games are events rather than stories. Any progression (if there is any) is second to the fact that “Hey, Mario’s hosting a party again!” Earlier stories, even the first one, had the overarching narrative as the main event, with the final board tying everything together. And given how big Mario Party became in the last decade, I think that isn’t changing any time soon.

I noticed that all of the post Mario Party 8 games have no new characters, which is a little disappointing, since the hosts are stuff gave the games a unique identity. Mario Party DS has the elderly Koopa though. He's a brand new character, and looks similar to a PM character.

There are two original Mario and Luigi enemies that reappear, so they can use other ML characters, and the series has such a simple "overarching" story that it would be unnecessary to reboot it.

As weird as this sounds, the story modes in this series were always a highlight for me. I loved the Bowser fights in 4, 5, and 7, and getting to battle the Millennium Star in 3 was a lot of fun. And I loved how the GameCube entries in particular handled the story, as well as introducing original and returning characters. I even have a soft spot for 9, love the boss battles. I'm really hoping that Jamboree will have a proper story mode.

I really miss story modes in Mario Party and I hope Jamboree brings some of that back. I actually made a story mode of my own for my fan MP game (Mario Party: Fantasy) as an homage to the wild stories of the previous entries! Spoilers: the villain is not Bowser.

Story: In a land far, far away, lies the wonderful Fantastar Kingdom, a kingdom powered by the brilliance of the Superstars, the greatest stars in existence! However, the malicious Roguevoid wanted to be the only Superstar in the kingdom after his wish, or "Fantasy" was rejected. Thus, he possesses the King of the Koopas to achieve his goal. The kingdom was plunged into darkness, but a citizen of the kingdom, Faefy, manages to escape to the Mushroom Kingdom, knowing they have the greatest stars necessary to defeat Roguevoid. After befriending Mario and friends, she tells them of the tragedy that had befallen upon her home. So, Mario and friends travel to Fantastar, but upon arrival, Roguevoid challenges them to a series of Mario Parties, which happen to be tradition in Fantastar, so he can determine which one of them is worthy of the title "Superstar" and fight him in the "Final Party". 1.5. The roster: a total of 16 playable characters will be featured in MPF, consisting of Mario, Luigi, Peaches, Daisy, Yoshi, Birdo, Toad, Toadette, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Rosalina, Luma, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser and Bowser Jr. as unlockables. 2 beloved characters from a Mario RPG game will become DLC characters for the game's anniversary, alongside having their own board (note: if the Dream Stars from Paper Mario were hosts for MP5, why not have playable characters then?). 2. Gameplay & Gimics: The game plays as your traditional Mario Party game, with a grand total of 14 board, each themed after a certain character in the roster (excluding Luma and Diddy Kong, as they share theirs with Rosalina and Donkey Kong) and a pivotal point in their lives. The boards come to life through the Astral Gates, which embody the character the board is themed after (ex: Luigi -> Haunted Mansion board, because this was the first time Luigi played the role of hero to save Mario). There are 9 different game modes, 4 dedicated to traditional MP with different number of players (Bowser Party returns, but it's still normal MP, not like 10), and 5 dedicated to minigames. There is also a shop for costumes and sticker emotes you can use while playing (like Superstars), a theater mode for cutscenes, and a mode similar to the photo-op thing from MP10, but more like Data Greeting from Kingdom Hearts 3. 3. Hosts: Faefy is a ministar-like fairy creature and will be the default host of the game. However, Toadsworth, Lubba, and Prof. E. Gadd can also be hosts once the player completes certain missions, and Kamek serves as a surprise host after rescuing Bowser and Jr. in Story Mode or "Adventure Party" as it would be named. 4. Bosses: A possessed Bowser, Jr., and Koopalings will serves as bosses during MP game sessions, appearing as boss battles halfway through the game and at the end as the final minigame (in Free Play, you can turn on or off this gimmick if you want). @mariobroultimate1808 Since they are from the same kingdom, they should look alike. They look similar to Sugarstar from Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures, but have a little star trail/tail and are color coded (Roguevoid is red and black, Faefy is light blue and white). Roguevoid is currently more monstrous-looking, similar to the Dark Lord from Miitopia or that one villain from Super Paper Mario. The plottwist to the game is that Faefy is his little sister.

Let's not forget that MP Advance also features Hulu (shown at 9:10 and 10:12 ), who is the ONLY confirmed female Shy Guy (or rather, Shy Gal) in the ENTIRE Mario franchise. As a side note, did you know that some of these story modes actually have canonical winners? For example, in MP3 it's Luigi. In the intro, he's the only one who keeps admiring the Millennium Star instead of arguing about it, so from the get go his intentions were the most noble. Plus he's also the only one without a specific stamp tied to him, and if you pick any other character he's always the one to take their place, making him the default, true intended protagonist of that particular game.

Let's see, I know Luigi's win in MP3 has the most concrete evidence, but if I recall, MP1 was Wario, MP2 was Mario, and MP4 was Peach. 5 and 6 had canon winners too, but it was more complicated to determine so I don't remember for sure who they were. I 'think' 5 might have been Luigi again, and for 6 it was either Mario again, or maybe even Boo of all people.

Wow no love at all for Mario Party 9 Story Mode? This is one of my favorites, It has Shy Guy and Kamek as rivals, you have to beat at all costs, the funny cutscenes of Bowser and Bowser Jr talking and revealing the bosses, the actual boss battles and even has a ranking system for each time you beat the story.

Even though Mario Party Superstars doesn't have a Story Mode, I like how it references the past stories of Mario Party games as canon to it. Through that book in the bonus section listing the past games. Although I wish it remembered the handheld games... if only so MP DS could get love.

Lotta the party games (mario party and the mario sports games) have bizarre stories. I mean mario super sluggers’ plot involves peach creating an island Specifically For Baseball and Bowser decides to take it over and thats. Ok. Tennis aces has Luigi get possessed by an evil demon tennis racket. Its like. Can yall not jus have fun? Mario kart doesnt need a story (kidding ofc i LOVE these weird lil stories. Mp8 has a soft spot in my heart bc the star rod comes from paper mario. Mpds is prolly my favorite tho) Also rlly funny theres an entire MP game thats only single player (advanced). Ik ppl r vv negative on that one but like it was on gba i kiiiiinda get why it was a solo campaign

I think it's like a soft reboot, like it'll be 90% on its own but with a tiny bit of call backs, I personally don't want it to be littered with call backs and returning characters, I think the game should be allowed to stand on its own so all these people talking about Fawful or Antasma coming back kinda bug me (I'm not referring to any specific people btw) Plus think about it, this will be a lot of peoples first Mario & Luigi game so it doesn't make sense to have a load of call backs and returning characters especially in the main story

I doubt it. You brought up SMB2 USA, which completely destroys your argument as that whole game was actually a dream, and thus, doesn’t actually count. How many times in the main series has she not been kidnapped? 2 times. 3D World and Wonder. That’s 2 games out of like, at least 15, not including Mario Land 1 and 2. She’s the reason Bowser works as an antagonist as well. Just look at 3D World and Wonder. As much as I love them, they have by far the worst plot in their respective sub-series. Bowser in those games makes zero sense. He kidnaps some fairies because he wants to build a theme park? What the hell kind of motive is that? An incredibly stupid one. What about Wonder? He just… actually, what the hell is his motive there? I genuinely can’t remember because it’s so bad. The point is, two spin-offs where she’s the main protagonist, a movie where she isn’t kidnapped and two playable appearances in games that actually happened aren’t enough to say she won’t ever be kidnapped again- she will. They aren’t going to shake up the “status quo” or whatever. That’s basically what Daisy, Rosalina and Pauline are. Each of them has been kidnapped in some way at least once. They don’t need every single female character to be all independent and a girl boss and able to defend themselves. There will definitely be games with her as the main character obviously, but the formula has worked well for almost 40 years, and I doubt they’re going to change it any time soon. And again, Bowser needs some good motives. Not any of this theme park nonsense.

I respectfully heavily disagree with some of this argument and the points here. Because yeah, Bowser's goals in 3D World & Wonder are simple and dumb. But his plans are literally ALWAYS simple and dumb lol. He is the epitome of a simple and dumb villain. Its his entire appeal. Him screwing over others for his own personal gain, and messing with things he shouldn't like Wonder Flowers, ISN'T the usual for him? Lol. Its no different than every plot of Peach getting kidnapped. And I'd rather see Bowser try out some other dumb schemes, than have the stories ONLY themed around Peach. I especially think having the stories themed around other things is great, because it allows actual new things to be introduced into the series. Like the Flower Kingdom, or the Sprixie Kingdom. As random as they are at times. But you are right in that I'm not 100% convinced Nintendo will drop the traditional Peach kidnapped formula. If only because Nintendo is a company that loves to reuse safe troupes... both sometimes out of respect for their legacy, and to just play it safe... or to put it more honestly... nostagia milking lol. Peach being a damsel is such a big part of most of Mario's history, yeeeah its hard to see Nintendo dropping it completely. But I'm far from close minded on her not being kidnapped, and assuming if she isn't, she's automatically a "girlboss". I can understand not wanting her to overshadow Mario, or getting involved in e v e r y plot. But Mario needs to try new things, and its not unreasonable to think it will going forward. As the Switch Era has clearly shown it does nothing but help most of the time.

I think peach got kidnapped so much she had to teach herself to defend herself cause clearly the Toads are more than useless. Personally, i dont mind the damsel in distress. Especially the helpless ones. Men are meant to be there for the women they love especially since men are stronger and all. Peach in particular is a more feminine woman and less of a fighter. Seeing her fight is cool and all but also weird. Daisy seemed more like a fighter. But I do like playing as girls and having Peach as one of them is a good thing. If Nintendo kinda threw in a mix i think it would be fine. I think the main reason the trope died was because it was over done, and it isnt the only one. Zombies as a big thing, space was a big thing, Isekai in anime was a big thing and they all were over used and just died out and you see them spread out every now and then and are done more properly due to it. I think Peach got kidnapped so much because it was just a reusable situation. Now that Mario is moving to a online environment they need more Characters and Peach is just a very well loved woman as a princess should be. In a way, Mario can now move on after Peach was rescued by Mario into new stories. Now, its the flower kingdom but they could take this even further. Its nice helping Peach protect her neighbors. In a way, we are kinda keeping Peach from being kidnapped. We are better than Toads. Peach, get better Guards. They are useless.

Right now, I don't care how they put Peach (Kidnapped or Fighter) she's always my favorite Super Mario Bros character, but we have to admit that the "Damsel in distress" thing with her is getting old, and now it's better for her to do things, but still that doesn't mean Peach hates or doesn't need Mario even though she's getting stronger.

This is definitely a sequel. Like it or not, Paper Jam is the 5th Mario & Luigi game and Brothership is Mario & Luigi 6! Seems to me that Peach and Bowser will be assisting Mario & Luigi as maybe some kind of special that you earn like in Super Mario RPG. How sick would it be if the Super Mario Bros. got 2 extra teammates later on in the game in the form of Wario and Waluigi? I don't know, though. It feels like it's just going to be the Super Mario Bros. in this game. Just like in SS, BIS (Bowser was separate), and DT. PIT saw the Super Mario Bros. teaming with their baby counterparts and PJ saw them teaming up with Paper Mario. My dream Mario & Luigi game would be the Super Mario Bros. teaming up with Wario and Waluigi! Maybe in a future Mario & Luigi game!

That's like saying that Captian America: Brave New World is Captain America 3 because Captain America: Civil War was a crossover or that the 4th Tom Holland Spider-Man is actually Spider-Man 3 because No Way Home was a crossover.

I feel like its not a reboot because in one part of the trailer there is an area that looks very similar to Mount Pajamaja from Dream Team, so maybe you can somehow explore some reimagined locations from Mario And Luigi's legacy. Plus, in the direct, they called it a new entry and not a reboot.

Bosses: A possessed Bowser, Jr., and Koopalings will serves as bosses during MP game sessions, appearing as boss battles halfway through the game and at the end as the final minigame (in Free Play, you can turn on or off this gimmick if you want). @mariobroultimate1808 Since they are from the same kingdom, they should look alike. They look similar to Sugarstar from Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures, but have a little star trail/tail and are color coded (Roguevoid is red and black, Faefy is light blue and white). Roguevoid is currently more monstrous-looking, similar to the Dark Lord from Miitopia or that one villain from Super Paper Mario. The plottwist to the game is that Faefy is his little sister.

Let's not forget that MP Advance also features Hulu (shown at 9:10 and 10:12 ), who is the ONLY confirmed female Shy Guy (or rather, Shy Gal) in the ENTIRE Mario franchise. As a side note, did you know that some of these story modes actually have canonical winners? For example, in MP3 it's Luigi. In the intro, he's the only one who keeps admiring the Millennium Star instead of arguing about it, so from the get go his intentions were the most noble. Plus he's also the only one without a specific stamp tied to him, and if you pick any other character he's always the one to take their place, making him the default, true intended protagonist of that particular game.

Let's see, I know Luigi's win in MP3 has the most concrete evidence, but if I recall, MP1 was Wario, MP2 was Mario, and MP4 was Peach. 5 and 6 had canon winners too, but it was more complicated to determine so I don't remember for sure who they were. I 'think' 5 might have been Luigi again, and for 6 it was either Mario again, or maybe even Boo of all people.

Wow no love at all for Mario Party 9 Story Mode? This is one of my favorites, It has Shy Guy and Kamek as rivals, you have to beat at all costs, the funny cutscenes of Bowser and Bowser Jr talking and revealing the bosses, the actual boss battles and even has a ranking system for each time you beat the story.

Even though Mario Party Superstars doesn't have a Story Mode, I like how it references the past stories of Mario Party games as canon to it. Through that book in the bonus section listing the past games. Although I wish it remembered the handheld games... if only so MP DS could get love.
Despite the continuity nods though, they ignore the existence of Tumble and the Millenium Star. It's like their existence is retconned.

I mean mario super sluggers’ plot involves peach creating an island Specifically For Baseball and Bowser decides to take it over and thats. Ok. Tennis aces has Luigi get possessed by an evil demon tennis racket. Its like. Can yall not jus have fun? Mario kart doesnt need a story (kidding ofc i LOVE these weird lil stories. I think it's like a soft reboot, like it'll be 90% on its own but with a tiny bit of call backs, I personally don't want it to be littered with call backs and returning characters, I think the game should be allowed to stand on its own so all these people talking about Fawful or Antasma coming back kinda bug me (I'm not referring to any specific people btw) Plus think about it, this will be a lot of peoples first Mario & Luigi game so it doesn't make sense to have a load of call backs and returning characters especially in the main story
I doubt it. You brought up SMB2 USA, which completely destroys your argument as that whole game was actually a dream, and thus, doesn’t actually count. How many times in the main series has she not been kidnapped? 2 times. 3D World and Wonder. That’s 2 games out of like, at least 15, not including Mario Land 1 and 2. She’s the reason Bowser works as an antagonist as well. Just look at 3D World and Wonder. As much as I love them, they have by far the worst plot in their respective sub-series. Bowser in those games makes zero sense. He kidnaps some fairies because he wants to build a theme park? What the hell kind of motive is that? An incredibly stupid one. What about Wonder? He just… actually, what the hell is his motive there? I genuinely can’t remember because it’s so bad. The point is, two spin-offs where she’s the main protagonist, a movie where she isn’t kidnapped and two playable appearances in games that actually happened aren’t enough to say she won’t ever be kidnapped again- she will. They aren’t going to shake up the “status quo” or whatever. That’s basically what Daisy, Rosalina and Pauline are. Each of them has been kidnapped in some way at least once. They don’t need every single female character to be all independent and a girl boss and able to defend themselves. There will definitely be games with her as the main character obviously, but the formula has worked well for almost 40 years, and I doubt they’re going to change it any time soon. And again, Bowser needs some good motives. Not any of this theme park nonsense.
I respectfully heavily disagree with some of this argument and the points here. Because yeah, Bowser's goals in 3D World & Wonder are simple and dumb. But his plans are literally ALWAYS simple and dumb lol. He is the epitome of a simple and dumb villain. Its his entire appeal. Him screwing over others for his own personal gain, and messing with things he shouldn't like Wonder Flowers, ISN'T the usual for him? Lol. Its no different than every plot of Peach getting kidnapped. And I'd rather see Bowser try out some other dumb schemes, than have the stories ONLY themed around Peach. I especially think having the stories themed around other things is great, because it allows actual new things to be introduced into the series. Like the Flower Kingdom, or the Sprixie Kingdom. As random as they are at times. But you are right in that I'm not 100% convinced Nintendo will drop the traditional Peach kidnapped formula. If only because Nintendo is a company that loves to reuse safe troupes... both sometimes out of respect for their legacy, and to just play it safe... or to put it more honestly... nostagia milking lol. Peach being a damsel is such a big part of most of Mario's history, yeeeah its hard to see Nintendo dropping it completely. But I'm far from close minded on her not being kidnapped, and assuming if she isn't, she's automatically a "girlboss". I can understand not wanting her to overshadow Mario, or getting involved in e v e r y plot. But Mario needs to try new things, and its not unreasonable to think it will going forward. As the Switch Era has clearly shown it does nothing but help most of the time.

I think peach got kidnapped so much she had to teach herself to defend herself cause clearly the Toads are more than useless. Personally, i dont mind the damsel in distress. Especially the helpless ones. Men are meant to be there for the women they love especially since men are stronger and all. Peach in particular is a more feminine woman and less of a fighter. Seeing her fight is cool and all but also weird. Daisy seemed more like a fighter. But I do like playing as girls and having Peach as one of them is a good thing. If Nintendo kinda threw in a mix i think it would be fine. I think the main reason the trope died was because it was over done, and it isnt the only one. Zombies as a big thing, space was a big thing, Isekai in anime was a big thing and they all were over used and just died out and you see them spread out every now and then and are done more properly due to it. I think Peach got kidnapped so much because it was just a reusable situation. Now that Mario is moving to a online environment they need more Characters and Peach is just a very well loved woman as a princess should be. In a way, Mario can now move on after Peach was rescued by Mario into new stories. Now, its the flower kingdom but they could take this even further. Its nice helping Peach protect her neighbors. In a way, we are kinda keeping Peach from being kidnapped. We are better than Toads. Peach, get better Guards. They are useless.

Right now, I don't care how they put Peach (Kidnapped or Fighter) she's always my favorite Super Mario Bros character, but we have to admit that the "Damsel in distress" thing with her is getting old, and now it's better for her to do things, but still that doesn't mean Peach hates or doesn't need Mario even though she's getting stronger.
I really hope Hi-Fi Rush is given the same treatment in the far future (in-terms of the IP being passed on to a new studio that understands it, but considering that this is Microsoft where talking about here in this comment, it’s a bit of a fat chance).

This is definitely a sequel. Like it or not, Paper Jam is the 5th Mario & Luigi game and Brothership is Mario & Luigi 6! Seems to me that Peach and Bowser will be assisting Mario & Luigi as maybe some kind of special that you earn like in Super Mario RPG. How sick would it be if the Super Mario Bros. got 2 extra teammates later on in the game in the form of Wario and Waluigi? I don't know, though. It feels like it's just going to be the Super Mario Bros. in this game. Just like in SS, BIS (Bowser was separate), and DT. PIT saw the Super Mario Bros. teaming with their baby counterparts and PJ saw them teaming up with Paper Mario. My dream Mario & Luigi game would be the Super Mario Bros. teaming up with Wario and Waluigi! Maybe in a future Mario & Luigi game!

I feel like its not a reboot because in one part of the trailer there is an area that looks very similar to Mount Pajamaja from Dream Team, so maybe you can somehow explore some reimagined locations from Mario And Luigi's legacy. Plus, in the direct, they called it a new entry and not a reboot.
