I provide tips and advice on sports and event photography gear, camera settings, tools, and techniques to make you a better photographer!
I have 13 years of experience photographing sports of all ages and types. I've photographed everything from pee-wee baseball all the way up to professional football, basketball, and baseball - and EVERYTHING in between. Along the way, I've been asked many times how I take my photos, what settings I use in certain situations, and how I edit my photos. In this channel, I'll provide the best advice I can, based on my experiences.
Let's get shooting!

I’m using the a6000 with the 55-210 lens. I just got the approval to start taking photos at a local school for Friday night games on the sideline🏈. Do you have any tips? The field I’ll be at has very good lighting as well.
Hi Jack, I've really enjoyed this one. It's very helpful. Thanks so much
Does that lens work with a Nikon d800
@@Flicsbyadam yes
@@JackBeasleyMedia thank you
How do I change the fps 20 fps for bank A and 5 fps for bank B? At this monent when I change it it's the same for all (A,B,C,D)
good info. guys.
I photograph my small town's club and college sports each weekend. One reason I always shoot in jpeg, is because of the extra time taken to edit a raw file. My images are only posted on my face book sports page and shared to the club/school's fb pages. People may only look at an image a few times and by Tuesday evening the players/parents etc are already tuned in to the next weekend's game. For my circumstance, editing 50 images from a college rugby game, or 170 images from a pony club day would be a nightmare to edit in raw. I do this as a retirement hobby, it is not a source of income.
SO incredibly helpful and exactly what I was in search of! Very appreciative!
I trialed it and they improved A LOT since ver 2 or 3 I tried a few years ago . i had to buy it now, it helps so much with bird photos on my Canon r7 !!
Hey Jack - Have you tried the new Nikkor Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S? I got it recently and was shocked the moment I first held it. It's so light (even lighter than the 70-200mm f/2.8) that I initially thought Nikon forgot to put glass in it 😂 Images are insanely sharp, AF is lightning quick & dead quiet, and it's easily hand-holdable. Might be my new favorite lens.
@@MarkReese I haven’t. I did get the new Z 400/2.8 and it’s lighter than my F-mount 120-300/2.8, even though it’s bigger.
@@JackBeasleyMedia - Fantastic purchase, congrats! Incredible what Nikon has been doing with their lens lineup.
Do you know if the HLG you’re recording in is 4.2.0 or 4.2.2?
It’s 4.2.0
Why then you buy a VR II. There is e.g. a model tele 80-200 2.8 without VR at all. It’s was mine for 6 years - 30% pictures were blurry. Now I have VR II - no one. And why do u need a D-lighting and another (vinyeting, diffraction) when u shoot in RAW 😅😅😅
@@HenryT5 That video is three years old and camera tech has improved significantly since then. The advice I’d give now is different than what I gave then. Also, some photo editors actually read those settings in their RAW editors and apply it upon import.
good explanation of various video features.
Great work sir
thanks!
good info. just found your channel today. yea, that is wild there's more Canon Users than Nikon. I know Canon has more cameras to choose, where Nikon really doesn't.
What brand of memory card were you using? This makes a difference. Not all cfexpress cards are the same?
thank you! so helpful
Thanks for the tips. I'm going to try that calibration adjustment. Incidentally, I had been using RAW in shooting all my sports photos. However, this past weekend I decided to use JPG on my Z9 so I could take advantage of pre capture mode. Game changer! File sizes are smaller AND I had no issues in editing. Which file type do you use?
Good tips for almost any kind of photography or video.
Hello Jack, thank you so much for an excellent video. Just a question though, do you ever shoot photos using live view? I suffer from head tremors so I find it impossible to look through the viewfinder. Would the settings you advised apply to using live view? I have been taking photos of my son’s men’s soccer games. It’s just a hobby I enjoy doing. I use a tamron 70-200 lens on my Nikon d7500 as I’m a beginner but now after you explaining the bigger lens I might just have to buy one of those. Thanks for all your tips, appreciate it 😊👌
@@melissaheironymus6010 No, I never use live view but I learned photography when there was no live view. However, yes it’s possible and I see a lot of younger photographers doing it that way.
Great video as always!
@@RyanCaptureMedia thank you!
Your rendering time seems ok, what GB graphics card did you use please?
Don’t know, I replaced that computer a year ago.
Jack, thank you for the settings to try. I use a Z8 to shoot photos of granddaughters' soccer and field hockey. I have been hesitant to shoot video but after watching your video, I am looking forward to learning/shooting some video of the games. Again, thank you.
Hopefully my shots make it to your inbox. West Texas A&M allowed me to come down and shoot basketball and baseball just to try it out. I started last season with a Fuji XH2s but graduated to a Z8 this year. Amazing camera. A Z9 would've been a little better with the dual CFX B slots and grip, but I did ok. Well, you'll maybe tell me that lol. Thanks for your videos and tutorials. I learned quite a bit from you.
Thanks for watching!
Jack, do you think that the z8 is fast enough for high school sports? I was thinking of a z8 or a z9. I’m a teacher, so overall cost is somewhat important.
The Z8 is essentially a mini Z9. Its performance is very similar. You only lose on the built-in grip and larger battery capacity. It also tends to heat faster when shooting video. Other than that, yes, it's very good for sports.
I've shot D2 college basketball and baseball with a Z8 and F mount glass. It's more than enough. I've gotten good shots with a Z6II as well, but the Z8 is way better.
@@JET-Photo Agreed, I ended up selling my Z6ii.
Does the program work with capture one?
Could you please clarify which version is 70-200 ?
In that video, it was the f-mount FL version - www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-200mm-f28-fl.htm
Your sports tips have really helped me photograph my kids over the years. My daughter is in high school now and I really struggled with night games as lighting is just terrible. Even borrowing 300 2.8 last year for a game iso was through the roof. By chance have you ever shot with something like a 135 1.8? I know it’s not idea focal range for soccer but I can help but think that aperture would help a lot. DX crop mode might help bridge a little bit of gap since I’m shooting with 45mp. I’m torn between that and going with used 300 2.8. I’m shooting only for this team so I tend to get to know them well which helps tremendously. Thank you again for your channel.
I think you’re limiting yourself with a 135. I’d consider getting a camera body (used) that does better in low light and get some software that cleans up noise well. I comfortably shoot at ISO 20,000 shooting RAW and processing in DxO Pure Raw 4
@@JackBeasleyMedia I’m already shooting with Z9 and use Topaz (I know you don’t like topaz). I agree shooting with 135mm would be limiting. Even shooting with 2.8 lens I was in 20,000 iso range in second half. Even though used 300 f/2.8 is probably best bang for buck I’m trying to avoid buying a f mount lens if possible. I guess I have more thinking to do about direction I go in. I appreciate your input.

Do you think a canon EOS REBEL T7 DSLR Camera | 2 lens kit with EF18- 55mm + EF 75-300mm Lens, black would be a good beginner camera for soccer photography?
@@livspicy3588 Yes, that will get you started for daylight photos with the longer lens.

How heavy are you going on the denoise in LR? This seems like a skewed comparison that you shouldn't really be making as pureraw does a lot more enhancing than purely the LR denoise tool. And it seems your using the denoise tool at quite a high % which explaines why all your LR denoise comparison shots have such loss of sharpness and look more denoised. A better comparison would have been if you would have put the denoise slider at 20-30% and left alt sharpened, left alt detail, left alt radius and left alt sharpness masked the LR denoised version . Pureraw is trying to perfectly do all this for you and sometimes is great, other times isn't but ultimately gives you less control over your denoising and sharpening process it as it works destructively. + In a general healthy workflow you should denoise and sharpen after editing to eliminate the potential of artifacting on a denoised images as you stretch the dynamic range while processing.
Question... Is the noise reduction in Pure Raw 4 the same as the noise reduction in Photolab 7 Elite?
From what I read, no. Pure Raw 4 is more advanced.
Have you tested ON1 NoNoise AI 2024 against DXO? I'd be interested in the results. I went to ON1 because I was unimpressed with Topaz Photo AI but I'm open to other options if they are better.
I did some time ago, but I don't think I included it in a video. I don't recall it being better than the others I've used. Topaz Photo Ai is tricky to use, and you have to babysit it.
Great video, thank you!
@@lidaamini3543 ok, thanks!
Interesting video, but it would have been more interesting and useful if the images you inserted in the video would have written the information about the shot, with which optics etc. etc....
Don't get confused with LR and LRC there is no Discover in LRC capiche
Is it worth buying a high shutter count Canon 1Dx body for a cheaper price? And then replace the shutter once it fails? Or is the cost of replacing the shutter too expensive?
It could be. I don’t know what Canon charges for shutter replacement, but I’m guessing around $500. Make sure they still do it on that model.
Such a helpful video, thanks.
Im using pure 3 and its fantastic with my Fuji crop sensor files & as result i dont need full frame heavy gear anymore. Would it be worth upgrading to Pure Raw 4?
I can’t say how it performs with Fuji files. What I do know is that with my cameras, Pure Raw 4 does a better job with faces than 3.
@@JackBeasleyMedia thanks 🙏🏻 will give it a trial
So I just purchased my first camera , I got the Sony a6000 with the Sony 55-210mm lense. Any tips?
