  Methylamine is easy to make by refluxing amonnia in formaldehyde in HCl. Keep the ammonia in excesd to promote the creation of mononethylamine. The ammonium chloride will precipitate out and the stuff left is monometylamonium hydrochloride. You can femive the di and tri methylammonium slalts by recrystallization in alcohohol followed by a DCM wash. Methylamine smells horrible 😂

  If i may add a bit to this, you don't flip the configuration from R to S or S to R because it's a Fischer projection. Instead, you flip it because you have a H on the horizontal plane indicating that you have an H molecule on a wedge when it should be on a dash.

  The problematic part of this synthesis is that you can't really rely on Friedel-Crafts alylation, it has the potential of do multiple alkylations, so you'd have a lot of subproducts, also, starting frol benzene is easier on paper, it's volatile and a carcinogen

  My org teacher actually taught us how to make amphetamine lmao, it's not much better but whatever, if you guys want an easier method, use benzaldehyde, then make a Henry Reaction followed by an elimination by dehydration, you can then reduce it to an alifatic amine by using sodium borohydride and copper chloride as a catalyst, I sae a paper that used that, then a formylation on the amine should yield you methamphetamine

  Interestingly all of this information is already on Wikipedia since knowledge isn't illegal (yet). I am also convinced that this path isn't profitable for anyone thinking of making any of this to sell since it would be very time-consuming. The chemicals required are expensive and drugs are so available nowadays that you can't sell drugs for that much money anymore. If you had a setup like they had at the end of Breaking Bad, you could make money but otherwise, the pseudoephrine route is probably more profitable for small-scale operations. It's always good to have more people get interested in chemistry, it's truly a fascinating field of science.
