The notation is in fact even more interesting than you think. The numbers are the modern method of transcribing the performances of the piece and the characters below them are the original, which in themselves only give you the note positioning and fingering and nothing else. No rhythm, tempo, dynamic, ornaments, slurs or gliss, any of these things. This makes the traditional Guqin performing style highly highly interpretive. This piece for example had been performed anywhere between 3 to 30 minutes
