Hi everyone and welcome to The Magic of Pencil!
My name is Lissa (pronounced Lisa) and I'm a self-taught pencil artist specializing in realism with a focus on drawing nature, animals and landscapes.
As passionate as I am about pencil, I am equally passionate about teaching others the magic of what may be achieved with nothing more than "the simple pencil"! I've been teaching for the past few years from my home studio, but with the advent of Covid19, have finally decided to make the leap into video teaching.
I invite you to subscribe and hope you'll join me here on my channel regularly and allow me to help you discover the Magic of Pencil for yourself!

Wearing gloves.... I would not consider this art.
Would love the tutorial on how to make the graphite cotton in the pouch! That would save me so much time
Hey I did learn some stuff from your video and trust me that’s impressive because you can ask anybody I know everything. Lol I saw using charcoal a few months ago after crashing and burning with it about five years ago. I just Dab some on the paper and start smearing it around just to have it blotchy with the little grains smeared everywhere. Now I gently put it on with a make up brush, multiple layers and even mixing graphite between them for different effects.
Thanks for this video Lissa. Can you discuss your exploration with acetone?
Thanks for sharing!!! These tips were very helpful for me 👍

Which kind of paper you use?
I usually use Bristol smooth paper for my graphite work.
LoL this has nothing to do with the graphite powder but your voice sounds gorgeous by the way.
HA! This made my day! Thanks! I'll tell my husband that next time I have to yell at him! ;)
Thank you for telling me what graphite powder is also on Amazon you can buy this by the quart for $18.99 I just wanted to tell you because I don't know if that's a lot cheaper because I seem prices where just for a few ounces it's $20
Hi Jay! Thanks for watching! I can't remember what I paid for my 6 oz jar (I think it was around $12 some 10ish years ago?) ... but ... you will NEVER use a whole quart!! LOL that's a LOT of graphite powder I think! Unless you have some friends to share it with, you might want to get a smaller jar of it. My 6 oz jar has lasted me 10ish years and I honestly expect it to last at least another 20 years and I use it fairly often. Or, if you don't use it that often, you could just scrape it from a 6B or 8B pencil as you need it! :)
I’ve always had trouble drawing fur and feathers and this is genius. I had a real ‘Aha!’ moment. I watched it again and did a mock up to try myself to follow along and suddenly I have feathers. Nicely done! Thank you. I came over from IG after seeing your gorgeous work on there. I wonder if you will do another showing those longer feathers which always seem so complex to those of us who don’t know how? 😉🌺
Ohh, thank you SO much! I am so happy to know this has helped you! Feathers are so much fun...and they're really very easy to do! I just recently gave a zoom class on how to draw them! You can sign up for my newsletter to be notified of any future classes and/or videos at lissarachelle.com/news.html ... I'm planning to start creating more videos this fall! :)

Thanks so much, I'm so happy if you found it helpful! :)
Hi Lissa, thanks for the great instructions and tips. I draw a lot, but have never used graphite powder. Will definitely try it.
Hi Erika. Thanks so much for watching! I would love to know what you think of the graphite powder if you use it. It's especially nice for background and sky effects. Have fun with it! 😀
Thank you for this video and for sharing these techniques. I have graphite powder and I used a cotton ball to apply it. It didn’t stay on the paper and even using the brush didn’t help. The powder was just like dust on the paper. Do you know what I am doing wrong? I am using Art Graf graphite powder.
Hi Olga, That's very strange! I have never heard of this happening before. I have used graphite powder on all sorts of paper ... from newsprint (which is what I am using in the video), to Bristol smooth paper to various sketchbook papers to printer paper and have never had this problem. I can only think that it might be the brand you're using. Or possibly your cotton balls have some kind of sizing in them?? Try applying your powder with a blending stump to see if that works. If so, it's your cotton balls that are the problem. You can also try just scraping the graphite from a good quality 6B pencil and see if that works for you. If so, then it's the powder that's your problem. I'd be very interested in knowing the results if you try this! Good luck! 😀
Lissa Rachelle Thank you for your reply I definitely try your suggestions and let you know the results. Thank you!
Lissa Rachelle I bought different cotton balls and this time the graphite was absorbed by the paper. Thank so much for sharing your expertise.
Wow! That's so interesting! I'm really happy I was able to help, Olga! I'm sure you'll really enjoy playing with the powder now! 😀
