    This man is my new hero. The music that subtly blew my mind with dope ass bass lines; his straight up no BS Arch Linux approach to explaining it all. Or just the down right solid double whammy of entertainment/education ratio of this video. A friend of mine recently got me obsessed with server machines. He gave me an old PowerEdge 2950 he had laying around; and I promptly upgraded to a rather well equipped PowerEdge R730. I've been using it for other means, but I'm promptly realizing it's potential far exceeds my previous expectations lol. I get that life happens, and that you may or may not continue to upload content. But I must say, you've earned my sub, and this video was fantastic in every way. Top shelf stuff man. Thank you. Congratulations on the family additions, and I'm sorry for the loss. Keep on keepin on. EDIT: Yes. I'd be interested in Dev logs.

    Okay so I have to buy DVDs and then download them under my computer and then set up a server that's way too much trouble I would have to get off the couch I think Plex is way easier and also most of my content I downloaded off the internet I do have Stacks and stacks of physical disks that I recorded off of cable TV from back in the day when I thought the grid was going to go down and I would be the only one that had anything to watch because I saved it all on a disc but I never ever unless I'm cleaning or something even put one of those discs in to see if it still works so yeah I'm going to stick with Plex cool video though you have talents you should do more actual interesting stuff

    If I didn't pay for 2 licenses for different devices, I'd simply swap to Jellyfin, there's just no benefit in me doing so right now. Maybe Emby will piss me off like so many other developers that I've purchased products from and I'll migrate!

    Making backups of DVD/Bluray (and ripping) is illegal in The Netherlands. The Dutch copyright act has a section that makes it illegal to 'bypass the copyprotection' even if you would include those protections in your backup copy.

  • @mcg9573
    @mcg95735 ай бұрын

    Wow. I thought The Netherlands usually had some sane laws.

  • @kevinh96
    @kevinh965 ай бұрын

    It's also actually illegal in the US too, the DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent copy protection mechanisms which almost all DVD and BluRay discs have. However in both countries you are not going to have the authorities breaking down your door and raiding your home at 4am as long as you are ripping, storing and playing your legally purchased media in your own home on your own devices.

  • @mcg9573
    @mcg95735 ай бұрын

    The circumvention itself is ok, it's the duplication of a circumventing encryption I believe, which is really a matter of semantics. So you can legally program a dvd ripper back in the day and it's not illegal software, but the use of it is.

  • @Misterz3r0
    @Misterz3r06 ай бұрын

    So, I'm 100% with you on this whole endeavor. I myself sail the high seas in addition to being an archivist. But, I want to clarify one point that people seem to be confused on. It is legal to create backup copies of media you own for personal consumption and archival purposes. However, it is NOT legal to circumvent any form of encryption, security, or digital rights management on that media. This is the loophole corporations were able to get passed through DMCA to stop people from legally backing up their own media. Courts have ruled in favor of this very strict interpretation of DMCA on the grounds that this is what Congress intended when DMCA was passed. And since all digital media formats since DVDs have some form of copy protection, for all practical purposes, it is not legal to backup copies of DVDs, Blu-Rays, or digital downloads since that would most likely require removal or circumvention of copy protection.

  • @summoner2100

    This is BS misinformation. Ripping your own discs, bluray or dvd IS illegal. There is NO legal way to rip a dvd or bluray because BYPASSING the copy protection is what is illegal. Yes there is a law that says you can make a copy of your own items. However, ripping past the copy protection is NOT accounted for so stop pretending that your not breaking copyright. Because you ARE.

  • @Misterz3r0
    @Misterz3r06 ай бұрын

    Calm down, dude. It is a confusing topic for most people to grasp and it was intended to be confusing by design. Also, there is no law that states it is legal to make backup copies, it is a precedent established by courts over decades of litigation. DMCA supersedes by introducing penalties for circumventing copy protection, but the law being used against individuals making backup copies for their own consumption is pretty much unenforceable.

    Ok but why is jellyfish better than plex?

  • @mcg9573
    @mcg95735 ай бұрын

    Emby is better than Plex with it's folder structures and how it manages list for one, and just all around Plex is an outdated piece of software. Jellyfin is essentially an open source clone of Emby, and therefore better than Plex. You can look up features and compare yourself to see if it's worth the hassle, but for anyone starting new, Jellyfin is the way to go unless for whatever reason it can't be installed.

    Digital copies have to be stored on some form of physical media. Be it hard drive, optical disc, shitty solid state drives, etc. Streaming companies have physical media to rent to you. I only buy CDs and DVDs for my entertainment. No point in going Internet only as anyone can take your access from you at any moment. Or succumb to the latest "woke" shit eaters who want to censor everything they don't like.

  • @zachtobias

    I'm trying to manage expectations for those that might have lower specs on their hardware. Before I switched it up and went with a dedicated machine, individual rips were taking ~14 hours to complete solo which easily ballooned if you added more drives and divided resources even further. Even now after I upgraded, 4k uhd takes a while

  • @peterschmidt9942
    @peterschmidt99425 ай бұрын

    I think it depends on what you use to rip and the content. Obviously if it's Blu-ray and UHD it could take a while compared to a standard DVD. But also if the DVDs running off sata it's going to be much faster to rip than a USB DVD drive. Normally it takes about 10min with a build in drive and about 20-30min on a USB for me.

    I've thought about doing something similar with my movie collection, but one thing I'm concerned about is my TV that I watch movies on, so long as I watch it via a DVD or Blu Ray player will match its refresh rate to the content, so for example, watching a regular TV show that is 60 FPS, the TV will match to the refresh rate to 60 hz, and if I'm watching a DVD or Blu Ray of a motion picture that was shot in the typical 24 FPS that most movies are shot it the TV will detect that 24 FPS frame rate and match it with a 24 hz refresh rate, that being said, connecting my computer to my TV even playing a movie on my DVD-ROM drive I have the computer is still set to display at 60 Hz, so regardless of what he DVD is that I play on my computer the TV is going to be using the 60Hz refresh rate that the computer is set to, so this only work when being played through my DVD/Blu-Ray player. Do you know of a means to make the system storing the media to automatically adjust the refresh rate to the media being played so that my TV can do what it was designed to do, that is match it's refresh rate to the media?

  • @zachtobias
    @zachtobias6 ай бұрын

    So the way I do it is that I use some form of set top box with every screen I watch on. For example, in my basement I use an xbox with the jellyfin app. In the master bedroom, I have an nvidia shield. The devices do all the heavy lifting of refresh rate conversion (most of the time) and the computer just hosts the data.

  • @HarrySwettenham26

    I don't know about Jellyfin but I have PleX for many years and it has a feature for refresh rate and resolution switching when playing a film or TV show. I have tested this on my PC, as well as on my Amazon Fire Stick and it will change the resolution and refresh rate to match the media you're playing.

  • @mcg9573
    @mcg95735 ай бұрын

    If the device you're using won't handle the overhead, the server should transcode for such features of resolution\etc. Look into that.

    FYI, it is actually illegal to make decrypted media backups in the US, due to DMCA. Circumventing encryption is not legal, it's extremely clear unfortunately. So DVD or anything newer is off the table (except stuff that's already DRM-free). However, in practice this doesn't matter since no rightsholder will know you've done it haha.

    in my library, not only did it rip 5.1 but it also ripped every available audio track and made them available in the resulting files allowing Jellyfin to play different languages or commentary depending on how it's set up. I have had a single audio encoding mistake though on a DVD where the intro to a movie was garbled but re-ripping fixed that up and I haven't had anything like that since. Hope that helps

But Jellyfin hasn't made the questionable commercial decisions that Plex seems to be hell bent on making and you can't go wrong with open source. The only real issue I have is that the Xbox app is kind of iffy....I haven't checked it out but one of my items on my "want to do" list is see if I can't contribute some code changes to it to make it much better.
