Sir, any impact of sc reservation on schedule of mains? Is there any scope to get postponed?
Peninsular rivers in India face several challenges, particularly because they are non-perennial, meaning they do not flow year-round and have maximum discharge during the rainy season. Here are the key challenges: 1. **Seasonal Variability**: - **Rain Dependency**: These rivers heavily depend on monsoon rains for their flow. Any variability in the monsoon season can drastically affect their water levels, leading to either floods during heavy rains or droughts during lean periods. 2. **Water Scarcity**: - **Dry Periods**: During the non-monsoon months, many peninsular rivers experience significantly reduced flow or even dry up, leading to acute water shortages for irrigation, drinking, and industrial purposes. - **Groundwater Depletion**: Over-extraction of groundwater to compensate for the dry periods further exacerbates water scarcity issues. 3. **Pollution**: - **Industrial Discharges**: Industrial effluents and untreated sewage are often discharged into these rivers, especially when they are not flowing, leading to high pollution levels and degradation of water quality. - **Agricultural Runoff**: Use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture results in runoff that contaminates river water during rains. 4. **Ecosystem Damage**: - **Aquatic Life**: The variability in water flow impacts the riverine ecosystems, threatening the survival of aquatic species that depend on stable water conditions. - **Riparian Habitats**: Fluctuating water levels can lead to the loss of riparian habitats, affecting flora and fauna that thrive in these regions. 5. **Human Activities**: - **Encroachment**: Riverbanks are often encroached upon for agriculture, construction, and other activities, leading to reduced river widths and increased vulnerability to floods. - **Sand Mining**: Illegal sand mining from riverbeds disrupts the natural flow and can lead to the destabilization of river banks. 6. **Interstate Conflicts**: - **Water Sharing Disputes**: Many peninsular rivers flow across state boundaries, leading to disputes over water sharing. The lack of a comprehensive and cooperative management framework often exacerbates these conflicts. 7. **Climate Change**: - **Erratic Rainfall**: Changes in climate patterns can lead to more erratic and intense rainfall, affecting the flow regimes of these rivers and increasing the risk of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts. - **Temperature Rise**: Higher temperatures can increase evaporation rates, further reducing water availability in these rivers. 8. **Infrastructure Challenges**: - **Dam and Reservoir Management**: Improper management of dams and reservoirs can lead to issues such as siltation, reduced water storage capacity, and inefficient water distribution. - **Irrigation Infrastructure**: Poorly maintained irrigation canals and inefficient water use practices in agriculture exacerbate the scarcity of water. Addressing these challenges requires integrated river basin management approaches, sustainable water use practices, pollution control measures, and cooperation among states to ensure the equitable distribution and conservation of water resources.
