I remember having to write a paper (and give a presentation) in one of my Master's degree classes and the instructions were to analyze a poem of our choosing from a sociolinguistic perspective. About half the class chose something by Robert Burns for the easy "A". I chose Jabberwocky because, apparently, I like to make things exceedingly difficult on myself. 😆

I'm sure the King of Kings held great meaning in his day, and that a statue of his visage remains is a testament to the power of the meaning he held. That no one bows any longer to the ruler does not mean that his power has waned. It has merely dispersed like the sands of his memorial swept into other lands which are imbibed with that same spirit of domination and command. Very few on this planet have any statues at all that remain after about 2000 years. Shelly's wife undoubtedly had a much more firm hold on the forces of life after death than Percy.

Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas in poetic form. In Romanian, it's "deşertăciunea deşertăciunilor, toate sunt deşertăciune". 🙂 It translates more like emptiness, but also meaninglessness, futility in absolute form. Shelley gives us a poignant illustration of what this would look like.

A truly unfortunate event, all due to terrible miscommunication. "Lord Raglan had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions, a task for which the light cavalry were well-suited. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a suicidal charge against Russian artillery." (source: AI ChatGPT aka "Sydney") Think of the bravery these men must had knowing that this was a suicide run, yet they followed their flawed and fatal orders to their deaths. (Crimean War - Oct 25, 1854 Battle of Balaclava)
