I remember U of Bridgeport had a decent radio station with this punk rock show in 1982 called, 'Sounds for Sinners'. Great chance to hear some good punk/new wave. I grew up real starved for good music. At my lame HS all anybody listened to were AC/DC and Van Halen.....nothing else. I remember every time they played this song the DJ start out by saying like 3 or 4 times that it was an anti-nazi song and the band weren't fascists. There were probably a lot of complaints, LOL.

This is a true 1977 punk classic, snarling vocals, excellent guitar work all held together by incredibly fast drums. I don’t normally like sax with punk but it works ok here. Wolverhamptons best punk band of that era and arguably the best in the midlands!

As original fans/witnesses know, when Flipper started in 1979-80 they were a post-'punk is dead'-satirical-funeral-march-and-mock-coffin-incident-in-1979 50% musical-satire and punk-subculture-satire band on stage, and didn't take themselves as seriously on stage musically until after the release of "Sex Bomb" 1981 'breakthrough' single (flattery will do that), that led to LP sessions. The only members of the band that really 'knew' how to play their instruments when they started in 1979 were ex-Negative Trend* drummer Steve DePace and to a slightly lesser extent ex-Negative Trend* bassist/singer Will Shatter and then ex-Vietnam-vet/ex-SST** guitarist Ted Falconi. Will's 'lazy bass' at many gigs at the time was deliberate, but not for struggling Bruce ('Loose') Calderwood who couldn't really play bass when the band started (it was part of the 'in joke' about Flipper that it was a semi-uniquely anti-self-serious meander-blur satirically-musical 'punk-rock' band paradoxed/paired with a tight grounding center of gravity surrounding drummer Steve (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mX6BqtFweJixm9I.html). If critics told them they were terrible-ish but fun to experience and hear, the joke was, "yeah, that's the point" - it was satire about cultish narcissistic overly-serious 'rock-subculture-privilege' layed on thick. The band arguably veered from the upbeat satire angle/mindset arguably too soon enough). The San Francisco underground rock/punk scene of 1976-1978 was particularly locally-political and particularly infused with a lot of humor, silliness and diversity (thanks in large part due to Mabuhay Gardens hilarious satirically-derogatory promoter/emcee Dirk Dirksen from 1976+, and ghosted by local unon-rock band The Residents since 1974), but that all changed when the 'clones' and 'high school drop ins' took over the scene in 1979, hence the 1979 mock funeral concert paean to the August 1967 'Death of the Summer of Love' mock funeral march down Haight Street). However in band practice/creations Flipper sounded noticeably better and tighter than at shows at the time. Bruce expropriated the bass of a song I had made up in 1981 as a paean to Flipper and James Brown (Bruce inadvertently had previously turned me onto James Brown) which I played for him one time when I was paying him a quick visit while he was practicing on a tiny practice amp with either a metronome or a most basic synthesized drum beat (I cant remember which), and he liked it a lot and I gave him oral permission to do with it what he may, that he, unknown to me at the time, later used as the music base inspiration for the Flipper song 'Shed No Tears' (on their LP 'Generic Flipper') was musically invented on top of. Needless to say I never talked to any of them about it in the few times I ran into any of them over the next few years. I doubt Bruce even remembers, considering months earlier I had died and came back in his same apartment and he saved my life, and a few years later the only other witness in the room had no memory of the event or the fact he thought I had died right in front of him and wasn't coming back and was crying hysterically about it when it happened (however I was elated at the time, I had had an amazing Near Death Experience - long story). * Negative Trend (with Will Shatter on bass and Steve DePace on drums) GREAT 1978 EP: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m66LxpOaoN2fqrw.html **** SST (1978 EP) with guitarist Ted Falconi: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZV8rsuGhsneZs4.html
