    Drakethroat glaive's spell can be twin casted by a sorcerer. You probably know, others maybe don't. 28:48 about risky ring, but more generally, how can i see if one of my characters has advantage in something out of combat or dice rolls? this really bothers me. I don't see your Astarion having his +1-to-all buff after biting someone! Did you already say in some of your videotutorial that summoned unit can drink elixirs?

    I think I might go with a Swords Bard titanstring user in that case. That retains some good battlefield control while adding more excellent ranged damage Further, with two bards in the party that means I can do 2 Song of Rests. Meaning 4 short rests per act. That's a substantial increase in my resources and would give Karlach more ultra lightning bolts and give both bards more super powerful inspirations Gloomstalker 4/Swords Bard 6 would probably be the most tempting version for act 2 to tear through enemies with extra attacks every combat. But by level 12 I think I would want more spellcasting so I can summon water myrmidons and/or have Counterspell. So for act 3 I would probably instead shift to swords bard 10/ranger 2 (fighter 1 is also ok, but I prefer ranger 2)

    This actually does help, not because I’m going for level 8, but because my friend and I are playing an honor mode run and bugged the game so we didn’t get the XP from the first grove goblin fight (my fault). For some reason only 2/5 (I think is the total) bandits spawned at withers church. And we accidentally sequence broke a bit and locked ourselves out of XP from the grove, the paladins, and the town that’s on fire just because we went to the mountain pass WAY to early to grab gear we needed for our builds before we were confident enough to fight tougher battles. We’re about level 5 right now maybe 6😬

    Just got this video via the grace of the almighty algorithm. Really nice guide to boost that XP early on. I think I managed to hit level 8 in act 1 (or VERY early in act 2) on my Dark Urge run, but it was mainly due to killing pretty much everyone, including those bonus spawns. Otherwise, I was leaving around 7.5-ish so supporting your data. Level 8 is an important level as many of the great multiclass builds go live then, considering how it's typically 5 levels in one class for that extra attack/3rd level spells and then a 3-level dip for the second subclass perks. As for Act 2, you're probably aware of this, but just in case... You can farm some extra XP in the Gauntlet of Shar's Dark Justiciar fights with enemy-summoning Umbral Tremors (at the main crossroad and Balthazar's Outpost). I did the counting once and I think you can get roughly 30 enemies worth 60 XP each (except the big one who's worth 280 IIRC) in the fight outside of Balthazar's room alone. As they only have about 40-50 HP on Tactician, they're killed easily by a party that should be around level 9 at least at that point. Easy 2K XP that feels almost free.

    It's not that Larian hypes up runepowder in the lore, the game just underpowers runepowder mechanically. A one ounce vial of runepowder is equal to roughly two 100-lb barrels of gunpowder/smokepowder. If we use real world math, that means a one ounce vial of runepowder is roughly 64kg of TNT. The vial of runepowder Philomeen is standing over is supposed to be 17 pounds of runepowder... that's, spitballing, basically a 56m radius fireball explosion (likely vaporization within 18m radius) with the shockwave causing damage out to about 303m radius. So, yeah, runepowder is mechanically vastly under-powered.

    I will literally never understand why anyone would pray to an evil God/Goddess when there are countless other (often more powerful) good or neutral aligned Deities to choose from instead. If that father "Frakes" was so hungry why not pray to an agriculture god like "Chauntea" for example instead of an Archfiend like Zariel who possess far less divine power and doesn't even possess an agriculture domain in her portfolio. The only way I would have sympathy for those that end up as soul coins is if they truly didn't know that they had other options to pray to (Which would be highly unlikely).

  • @Melth
    @Melth2 күн бұрын

    I guess some of the evil races in D&D are stupider than people and perhaps cannot put coherent thoughts together well enough with their negative Int and Wisdom to figure this kind of basic stuff out, but it's very hard to explain for intelligent races. The existence of numerous verifiably real, good-aligned deities who are much more consistent about blessing people than the evil gods, and who don't even demand any kind of onerous codes of conduct, AND who also grant you a verifiably real and nice afterlife does make it unimaginably stupid to choose an evil god or a devil instead for this kind of thing. An excuse they sometimes give for devils is that gods only sometimes answer prayers, but devils consistently do. That leaves no explanation whatsoever for evil gods, but it *could* offer an explanation for desperate people praying to devils when the gods don't answer... But the devils themselves undermine that by randomly scamming people like Frakes because they're stupidly evil rather than intelligently evil. If Zariel had gone "That's a very badly worded prayer and you're an idiot, but ok, here's plenty of delicious and healthy food anyway", she'd surely get more souls in the long term!

  • @kingtickeler
    @kingtickeler2 күн бұрын

    @@Melth I completely agree with you on the "Attract more flies with honey instead of vinegar" angle for the devils and their deals. The fact that it's common knowledge that Devils routinely screw people over in their dealings yet people like Wyll still made that pact with Mizora is ludicrous. I'm glad Bhaalista doesn't have a Patron and just got the power by association which is a far more reasonable decision. What further compounds the silliness is that most of the time a lot of issues could have been solved by mortals in most worlds. I imagine Ranger would be one of the most common Classes encountered because of sheer necessity of having people that can safely forage the wilderness, hunt game/bounty hunt, and trailblaze for civilization. Since Rangers learn spells like "Goodberry" at level 2, Father "Frakes" could have had his issue solved by a local mortal Ranger IF Frakes didn't accidentally become a Ranger himself by surviving in the wilderness long enough to potentially pick up that skillset. Issues, like "Hunger" and "famine" are hard to sell when simple low level spells like "Goodberry" counter it so handily.

    It's far from necessary given how strong your party already is, but I was a little surprised you didn't have your fourth character as a throwing build. The best build (Barbarian 5/Fighter 4/Rogue 3) relies on rages to get bonus action throws, but I think the Eldritch Knight 12 build is still very good and doesn't use any resources at all. There's just a ton of item support for throwing throughout the game, and elixirs of cloud giant strength + tavern brawler mean you basically never miss and the damage is massive.

  • @Melth
    @Melth2 күн бұрын

    Throw builds are fun for sure! And in act 1, they're very strong. So I certainly did a lot of throwing back in act 1 myself. And if I could have a 5th party member, they would probably be a thrower. However, on this run where I can't rest and therefore a rage thrower would be ineffective, I don't think a dedicated throw build is worthwhile overall. Tavern Brawler in general stops being very good after act 1 in my opinion. Earlygame when accuracy is scarce and requires spending scarce resources like Bless spell slots or Oil of Accuracy, doubling your Str to attack rolls is great. But by this point I think all my characters, even the ones not really built for attack damage, have like 90% to hit without spending resources. By act 3 I expect I'll have 95% or 99% to attack absolutely anything, so the Tavern Brawler accuracy boost becomes unimportant. The damage boost remains decent, but it's not competitive with the +10 from Sharpshooter unless you use a cloud giant elixir. The trouble with a cloud giant elixir is it means no bloodlust elixir! And that means 1 fewer attack (or spell) per turn, which is really painful. Now admittedly it's not *always* possible to give your bloodlust user a kill every single round. But it's almost always possible. Again, if I had a 5th party member, they might end up using a cloud giant elixir and doing some throws, because I can't reliably get enough kills every round to justify more than 2 bloodlust elixirs I would say. Anyway, with pure fighter, I just don't think a throw build would be competitive with a good archer at this point. I'd probably take a titanstring user instead if I wanted another damage dealer who could use strength.

    I don't think you would be unjustified in wanting to change the 4th build since they nerfed the free haste spores item (which was absolutely correct to do, you can already trivialize any fight in this game without that insane of a buff). Although I think sticking to druid is probably the best choice: - they get the most summon spells in the game I think, especially with the 1 level dip in wizard; - keeping to wizard levels is almost useless, they get arcane recovery which is pretty good, but not for your run where it would mean you use it once per act (you can also have this by switching to land druid, besides their additional spells which sometimes contain spells not usually available to druids, but then you would have little use for wild shape) - wizard's strong spell list is also meaningless when you can have it in other casters with a single level dip, so more wizard levels would only mean more preparation slots which aren't all that necessary; - also, a normally good option like sorcerer relies more than other casters on long rests because of spell slots and sorcery points which you wouldn't get back frequently; so druids end up being a very strong option for this last build, they have a ton of strong options for control spells, especially with the dryads (who can also summon wood woads), and some damage and utility in spell choices

    I do appreciate that someone else found the whole "Oh, I'm a Bhaalspawn. Again." thing a bit trite. By the end of Throne of Bhaal, all the Bhaalspawn were supposed to have been killed off. That was the entire point: uniting all the Bhaal essense so that you would either rise as the new God of Murder, or put an end to the essence of Bhaal, once and for all. When I started playing Dark Urge, I, too, figured it out fairly early on. After all, it's a mirror of the battle the main character had in Shadows of Amn, to keep control of his Slayer self, or give in and use the power. Overall, I really like Baldur's Gate 3, and it opened me up to enjoy some aspects of 5th Edition, which was good, because before it, I was a 3.5 purist, especially after the abject failure of 4th edition. I also think the overall story is good, I just hate what I call the "Force Awakens Effect", aka the retelling of a story that's already been told well enough.

    Hi Melth, amazing video! I'm a noob to DND and Baldurs gate, on my first playthrough (tactician difficulty). I have definitely fallen into the noob trap of having a healer. The problem is that I always end up needing healing! Maybe it's due to bad tactics, maybe it's due to not having someone consistently dealing damage (probably both). I was wondering how I could change my party comp to escape this trap. I'm at the very start of act 3 now. My main character is a pure warlock that is generally concentrating on crowd-control while firing away eldritch blasts. I have an Astarion that is essentially the same as your Astarion, gloomstalker assassin. I have Lae'zel as a pure battlemaster fighter at 22 strength that also wields a titanstring bow, also has great weapon master and tends to dish out major chunk damage, especially with gloves of the underdog. Then I have Shadowheart as a pure life cleric focusing on supporting Lae'zel on the front line (sentinel, healing, bless, etc.) while casting short-range AOE like spirit guardians. Also a debuffer in act 2 with some radiant orb and blindness stuff but I don't think that will be as important in Act 3. What should I change? Also would love to see other viewers' opinions too!

  • @wekashipo7507
    @wekashipo75072 күн бұрын

    If it's a first playthrough and you're new to D&D as a whole, then I think you're doing really well just by making it to act 3. Less than 40% of players even get that far, according to the achievements on Steam. If you're not constantly TPKing, then don't feel bad about using a healer. Healing may be suboptimal compared to not getting hurt in the first place, but a win is a win at the end of the day. Bit of a copout answer, but minmaxing and optimizing really aren't necessary outside of an Honor run.

  • @ironbar2009
    @ironbar20092 күн бұрын

    Healing is a called a noob trap because you can never really out heal the damage that will be incoming. Most healing spells are 1) weak (low amount of health regained) and 2) costly (taking up spell slots and bonus actions). That being said, Life Clerics are very viable because they get to apply on-heal buffs using their channel divinity which they can use multiple times per short rest. This means bless + blade ward 3 times per short rest with the added bonus of healing your party for 30+ hp. You can also pre-cast spirit guardians and then stack movement speed to run around applying a bunch of debuffs with radiant orb and reverb to your enemies so they cant hit their attacks and cannot save against your control spells. This is still a very viable/broken strategy going to Act 3 as your damage may scale off, but the on heal buffs and widespread debuffing are invaluable.

  • @ironbar2009

    Overall your builds are solid and will easily carry you to end of act 3. Honor mode itself is pretty trivial with decent optimization and some game knowledge. A lot of people use it to get infinite sorcery points but just wanted to make sure you know about it so you don't accidentally end up with extra first level spells over the course of the act. (not that I think 1st level spells are ever going to make or break an encounter for you.)

    Those guys will be a nuisance for sure, but I think it's worth it to benefit from +1d4 damage in every other fight in act 2 The retaliation damage is only an average of 4d4 = 10 per attack, which adds up but is ok once in a while since I can have lots of sources of temporary HP. I also have a few ways to reduce damage like adamantine armor if I want to. The biggest thing though is I can just beat them with non-weapon attacks like smoke powder bombs, Eldritch blast, fireball, etc. Only Astarion relies heavily on weapon attacks for damage

    About the Minotaur: You call kill him really easily if you get to the Underkdark via Priestess Gut's chamber. Once in the Selunite Outpost, simply destroy the radiating orb held by the Selune statue to depower the defenses. From there you can have a single character take potshots at the Minotaur from atop the gate. (The Minotaur will damage the gate on a critical, but otherwise will deal no damage, so you'll have plenty of time.) The way to avoid the minotaur leaping up at you is to go to the very top of the gate. It'll attack the gate on its turn, you can then spend half your movement to go down one level, shoot at it, and then back up again to the top level of the gate. Rinse and repeat. (This probably isn't really necessary for regular runs, but I found it helpful for level 1 and/or solo challenges and such.)

    On my first playthrough, I recognized the intellect devourer for what it was and, as a Paladin of Vengeance, promptly destroyed it. I had no idea that it would actually have a role to play throughout the game, even if only a small one. Alas, Paladins, especially Vengeance ones, tend to be single-minded in those regards.

    @@darthimperious1594 Us is a weird character that way. No good explanation is ever given for why he's not under the control of the Absolute later but serves the Absolute in the beginning, why he'll help you kill a mindflayer while serving the Absolute, but will attack you if you start a fight with some random intellect devourer, and all kinds of other oddities To be honest I think the developers just thought it would be cool to have one of these little brain guys as a pet and didn't think about making it make sense in or out of character

    Earned a sub here, easily. You're voice is soothing, easy to understand, but most importantly, you get to the point with no rambling. You highlighted everything necessary, but didn't linger, and you also kept roleplaying as a significant thing to consider in the game. I watched your guide to the final Nautiloid encounter, then came to this, and now I'm off to watch your Nine Hells Challenge run, because hot damn, that seems insane, but, well... you actually seem good enough to do it! @@Bilndmann my initial opinion is that it's amazing, in that it's free to buff with before combat. Movement is tremendously valuable and she could give massive movement bonuses to many teammates. The damage is nice too. I think one could get greedy and exploit it for bonus damage on like 50 summons if you cast it really fast, but that's the kind of cheesy thing I wouldn't do on this run
