Beans Brews and Bread

I'm Andrew and welcome to my channel: Beans Brews and Bread! Please Subscribe and make sure you select the Bell Icon to be notified of my videos!

I'm based in Manchester in the UK and this is where I will share content on my three main passions: Growing, Brewing and Baking. I've had an allotment for nearly 10 years, been homebrewing for 7 and baking since I can remember.

There is a lot of cross over between the three interests as I grow my own hops and use my own produce in baking and brewing.

Hopefully there will be some content that is a different take or has a unique emphasis on these hobbies that you will find of interest.

Posting allotment tour videos once a month, sowing and and growing, baking and homebrewing content on Sundays.

    We tried to find an allotment when we moved here 22 years ago. The council didn't even have any allotments in the area. Our council covers a large sprawling area made up of many towns and villages. In the meantime my husband has died and since then I have got rid of nearly all my lawn and made raised beds to grow vegetables and fruit. We still don't have allotments in our town but they have started setting up community gardens. A good idea but I want my own land . It's getting to the point that now I am in my 70's I don't relish starting an allotment from scratch but I still would like to know that they exist here for younger people to enjoy. I have tried to shame my council into providing allotments to no avail and when I see abandoned allotments online it makes me very sad when there are so many of us that have waited so long and infact have now given up.

    Something took my beetroot as soon as the leaves popped their heads up out of the ground, maybe pigeons. Lettuces disappeared as well, I planted two rows and all I have left is one measly lettuce!!! Quite disappointing.

    😭 it’s 19c in the middle of the night here Andy but makes it really hard to get a good nights sleep. I am having a hard time getting outside during the day so most gardening is really early or after dinner if and when it cools a bit. I hope you get some warmer days as it’s so disheartening otherwise. My garlic didn’t get vigorously or split even though the above stalks were huge. Chin up Andy it’s not all bad 👍, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

    Good job! I've been making my own bread for about a year now. I prove for 45, 30 (or until doubled) then a final 30 minutes (or until doubled) in the tin. I bake for 30 minutes at 190c (or 170c fan assisted). I just restarted home brewing 4/5 weeks ago after a 40 year break. Good channel :) Victor...

    I was on the council list for 7 years and got offered a plot last week. The weeds are up to 6 feet tall there is a homemade shed of 8m x 3 m that the roof /floor is falling in and rubbish galore on the plot . BUT it’s 280 SQM of potential a massive grapevine and water outside the gate. I have been growing at home with the no dig method for five years while I have been waiting and learnt a lot while doing it and every year I struggled as I didn’t have enough space so I know it’s the right decision. Can’t wait for the 25th June when I can get stuck into it. I know it will be a couple of years before its to how I want it but I always say you get out what you put in.

  • @beverleysmith4215
    @beverleysmith4215Ай бұрын

    We waited for 4 years. To keep up with demand, when a full size plot becomes available the council split them in to 3 to make 3 small plots. We have one of those.

    Just found your blog which is refreshing in its honesty with successes and failures just like the rest of us. I've given up totally on parsnips! My French beans started off well but are flagging. I'm watering like mad but may have to start again. Can I ask where in the country you are? I'm guess somewhere in North Lincs / South Yorks. I'm in Cumbria where it's a lot wetter and less sunny, though I do have good soil, well-drained and rich. All the best, Richard (Cockermouth, Cumbria)

  • @beansbrewsandbread

    That’s wonderful to hear: thank you. There is no benefit to showing only the successes I find. It’s a struggle at times with the weeding and maintenance but if I do show the reality of keeping a plot it shows it warts and all - which makes the successes all the sweeter. I’m in SW Manchester by the way, close to Cheshire. So pretty rainy, mild etc as you’d imagine. Cheers, Andy.

    Any advice on growing garlic? I put some in two weeks ago mid-April, but nothing has come up. Any thoughts?

  • @beansbrewsandbread
    @beansbrewsandbread3 ай бұрын

    It can take a while for garlic to sprout, so don't lose hope just yet! They should have just about caught some cold temperatures to help with bulbing up. Two of my varieties rotted away, so I would say give it another week, then maybe dig around and see what's happening underground. I did and was able to get a quick planting in to replace them but even I think I was pushing it. If yours have failed, you might have missed the window now, but fingers crossed! Let me know how you get on. Cheers, Andy!

    I know an allotment where the 'waiting list' is not really how they operate. Its more about proving your commitment to work there and cultivate, make progress and look after the place. My friend is after getting half a plot there so we went for a stroll around it. I have to say, it was the most beautiful and tended allotment I have ever seen. Maybe this is a better way to do things, instead of a list??? Although a list does seem the fairest way - I am guessing there must be a probation period ??
