    What happens in the case of handguns with a magazine disconnect? Are they even allowed due to the "hammer down" rule or do you have to remove them in order to be able to dry fire your gun without a mag in it?

  • @01HondaS2kXD
    @01HondaS2kXD13 күн бұрын

    That’s a fascinating question to which I didn’t readily have an answer. There are two solutions: 1. The magazine disconnect is basically the only form of safety you are allowed to remove or disable. So, if you want to make life easier during the unload and show clear you could modify the gun to remove the magazine disconnect. 2. If you don’t want to do that you can keep an unloaded magazine on yourself to allow you to drop the hammer during “if clear hammer down and holster.” So, you would lock the slide to the rear, show that it was unloaded, drop the slide, insert an empty mag to disable the safety, pull the trigger, remove the magazine, then holster. It’s clunky but it would work. It’s not often I get a USPSA rules question that stumps me and requires me to use not only the rule book but also google. That was fun. lol

    @@01HondaS2kXD I appreciate the quick reply! My local club has "fun matches" regularly where it's set up like a USPSA match but not official. I shot it a couple times to wet my toes a bit before I do an actual match. That's the issue I ran into with my Sig Sauer M18. Even the ROs were a bit stumped when I showed up and I couldn't hammer down haha. At the moment I have been following the usual commands after shooting and just VERY deliberately pressing the trigger and showing that I cannot dry fire it and specifying to them that it has a magazine disconnect. My local RO guys are okay with it but I was curious what the official stance on it as I will be doing my first official match soon.

    Your movement looked really good! Which one did you mike on stage 3, guessing it was either the crazy slider or bobber? Your approach to the bobber (activator, paper, bobber) was how I wanted to do it last week and this, but I never got my positioning right to pull it off. And on the slider, you went activator, steel, slider, which I was too afraid to even attempt. Also liked your approach on the bus, effectively eliminating needing to go to that last window. Wish I had seen this before today lol!

  • @01HondaS2kXD

    Thanks. The Mike on 3 was the very first target. I point shot before picking up the dot lol. It’s definitely a spicy activator sequence but I’m happy with how it turned out. The slider activates pretty slow, so there’s plenty of time to hit the popper. During the big match I actually threw a makeup at it and still had time to get back to the swinger. Yeah I’m glad with my plan on the bus but never really shot it in a way that I liked. Every time I had some mistake that annoyed me. In this case it was that steel in the second window.

  • @01HondaS2kXD
    @01HondaS2kXD24 күн бұрын

    It’s not a common stage design element because it tends to use a lot of paper targets, but I have seen a handful of them over the years. One per stages will put a huge emphasis on transitions because rather than transitioning once to a target and then firing two shots, you are transitioning for each and every shot, so the transitions will have to be both fast and precise in order to do well.

  • @01HondaS2kXD
    @01HondaS2kXDАй бұрын

    Sorry, just now saw this comment. I love it. Definitely took some getting used to because I’m used to my other Glock which has a super light rolling break trigger in it (I tell people it feels like the trigger on an Xbox controller lol) whereas the DR920L has a pretty distinct wall. Some people like that. To be honest and fair I still would prefer it with a rolling break trigger and maybe a 2-3mm wider magazine release, but other than those two nitpicks I really love it. And obviously even with those nitpicks I’m shooting better than I ever have before. Factory grip is good. I added a tiny bit with a mild stipple and deepened the accelerator cuts. The slide serrations are EPIC- best of any handgun slide I’ve handled and great for forward slide manipulation. I love the beavertail which means I no longer slide up my thumb when I’m in too much of a hurry after a reload. And it has to be mentioned that the main reason I bought it was the INSANE length of the optic mount screws. I love the confidence of knowing I have easily triple the screw engagement that most optic slides have. And the mount is low enough that even the relatively low profile factory iron sights are usable in the bottom of the optic window in case your battery dies which did happen to me around a month an a half ago and I was still able to go one for one on steel with the irons so that works.

Now my evil plan is to shoot CO at matches with classifiers I think I can do good on and shoot LO when there’s a stupid classifier lol. Regarding majors, I’m not too worried about it. Aggressive stipple with equally ridiculous accelerator cut. I especially like the accelerator cut- I can keep my thumb locked on the gun in front of the takedown lever which is a lot of why it’s so flat especially in my more recent videos. 4. I joined Uspsa in 1992. There were only 3 divisions back then; open, limited and revolver. We seem to forget or don’t know that that the sport originated as a way to keep our defensive (Practical) shooting ability sharp. Stages back then presented challenges that attempted to create situations that one might find themselves confronted with. As the sport moved away from its origins a rift developed and ergo we got IDPA. As a course designer I still try to keep to some of the principles of our founders. That being said you will never see the following in my stages: Head shots with a no shoot underneath at a distance greater that 7 yards. Tuxedo targets at a distance greater that 10 yards. Disappearing gravity turners with no shoots or excessive hard cover. Mini poppers or plates at a distance greater than 15 yards. Unloaded starts. I always ask myself: if this was real life would I take that shot? Some of us would be in deep legal trouble if we took shots often asked of us in this sport. My critics say this is a sport, not real life. My reply is: it may be a sport, but it is no longer practical. Nuff said! I wish everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous and safe New Year!

  • @01HondaS2kXD
    @01HondaS2kXD6 ай бұрын

    I agree with the majority of that. I do love a good unloaded start but what you describe regarding target difficulty sounds like what I was at least trying to say. I think stages should have a degree of difficulty but that difficulty should remain _practical_. You describe that within a defensive perspective which is about where I was when I came into the sport. Now I view it from a skill / accessibility perspective. If I showed up to my first match to find non-stop excessively difficult targets like you describe I would’ve been discouraged and might not have returned. Keeping it realistically doable by most levels of shooters means that it’s generally a more fun match for everyone but the more skilled shooters can still set themselves apart.

    I really appreciate the sharing of both the stages and your thought process. I don’t care if we agree, the fact that I know some people think the way that you do can help broaden my design philosophy. I see some elements that I will be using as inspiration at my home range in Brooklyn, MI. Thanks again for sharing.

    Yeah. It was pretty annoying that they wouldn’t let us run our lights on that stage though. I maxed out the brightness and exposure in the video here but it was much harder to see the targets during the run than in this video.

    how many dry runs do you take prior to the actual shooting round? its crazy to me how you remember what target to hit in what order in some of these runs

    Thanks! So, memory and stage planning is one area I really consider to be a strength of mine. I will walk the stage a handful of times. The first time I’m literally just finding the targets and it’s a simple enough stage I’m finding the minimum number of places that I absolutely have to go to in order to hit all the targets. Once that’s done I’ll figure out the best way to flow those positions together. Once I’ve figured that out I’ll walk it again to make sure I have all of the targets and look for any potential traps or inefficiencies (things like if I reload here will I be close to the 180, which target should i engage last if possible to make my next movement more natural, etc.) that could be improved upon. If the stage is simple enough that’s all I need. If it’s more complicated I will walk a time or two more. I find it’s better to focus on going to a position and engaging all the targets I can see there because then rather than remembering as many as 16 targets I’m really only thinking of a much smaller number of positions. Very rarely does the actual engagement order of the targets factor in- that would be if I’m moving and the targets will appear and disappear in a certain order, or if there is an activated target, or possibly if there is a variance in the target difficulty that means I’d rather engage a certain target as I’m leaving to avoid moving on a target with hardcover or no shoots on it.
