    I had the same sticky cap on a brand new dark age (with the hook safe)! It took 1-2 months of daily use to (mostly) resolve itself. During this period I noticed the pen making a popping noise when not being used which made me think the problem was something to do with the finial. I also have the same issues with the nib sitting sideways on the feed and a small misalignment of the tines. A beautiful pen but deplorable quality control at this price point. I will not buy from Visconti again.

    @the_journeyman_project thanks for sharing! It's seriously a bummer because the potential of these pens is amazing! They are so nice! I hope they will get it together and reach the potential of what they really should be- especially at this price point! The lava resin is such an awesome offering, too!

    A nice detailed review which brings out the main features of the old-style Pelikan M400. Two minor observations: i) The filling mechanism of fountain pens should not be operated when the cap is closed. It strains the filling mechanism. ii) The Pelikan nib where the chevrons stop short of meeting the nib slit was introduced in the later versions of the Pelikan 400NN. The main differences between those nibs and that fitted to the M400 are the nib size being engraved in italics in the M400 nib and the distance between the circle enclosing the Pelikan logo and the breather hole is greater.

  • @EverGreenElephant
    @EverGreenElephantАй бұрын

    Thanks for sharing. Some little info on identifying the age. The production of the M400 started 1982 and at first they had the same nib design as the Pelikan 400NN which was produced 1956-1965, the nib having stripes that don't touch the slit which only the quite rare 400N has. However, the M400 have the nib size (F, M etc) embossed in an italic font which distinguishs the nib from the 400NN. The very old model 400 (1950-56) has no stripes at all.

  • @fountainPENdulum

    Thanks for sharing those dates and details, much appreciated! I have really enjoyed this nib is such s joy to write with and has great spring to it! Plus the pen is gorgeous, my understanding is that the barrel is Celluloid.

  • @EverGreenElephant
    @EverGreenElephantАй бұрын

    @@fountainPENdulum I would doubt that. The production of celluloid (officially) ceased 1951 world-wide because it's easily flammable. So, every remaining stacks of celluloid were and are very precious. As your pen was produced after 1982 it seems very unlikely that they used it for that.To my knowledge, Pelikan only used celluloid in some pre-war models and in some quite recent special editions of the M1000.

    I've seen some great deals for the Lamy 2000 in black, and you can't go wrong with the Pilot 823! I think for those who love this pen and Visconti in general, you have to be prepared for the gamble, the price tag, and the extra expense to have it tuned or ground by a nibmeister!

    I purchased Visconti Kaleido Voyager 14k Fine nib but I sold out after test. What I feel that Fountain Marlen LX Steel Nib is better for me and Otto Hutt 04 and 06 are much smoother and pleasant than Visconti. Italian pens are very beautiful and good (Nettuno and Marlen nibs), but Gemany pens are more smoother (14K Lamy Nib). I used about 200 pens recently. Caran De Ache Leman and S.T. Dupont, and Parker Duofold are top quality bit better than Aurora Optima or 88. Most balanced pen is Pilot among all pens such as 912 FM or 743 M, and 823 these are better than Sailor 3776 pro gear or platinum 21k.

    @@fountainPENdulum You have to read the info on them to see which ones are waterproof. Some are semi-waterproof, and others aren't waterproof at all. Their 'Purple Dream' is not waterproof at all. If a letter written with it gets wet, then all you'll have left is a blob of purple ink. But the ones that I have tested that they claim are waterproof, are waterproof. I've pretty much decided to only use waterproof inks.

    I don’t think that it matters how many pens anyone has as long as they’re happy and enjoying them. And I believe that if they hit a point where that’s no longer the case, there’s probably a deeper underlying issue. We tend to blame things for our misery, usually though the issues lie within us. What bothers me is Drew Brown‘s video and the many references to him. Drew works for one of the largest US/international retailers of pens and stationery. He has the luxury of being able to see, hold and try any pen that interests him without having to purchase it. Not many people have that luxury. That makes it a lot easier to only have a hand full of pens and inks.

  • @fountainPENdulum
    @fountainPENdulum2 ай бұрын

    I agree, it doesn't matter how Many Pens or Which Pens someone has as long as they enjoy them and are happy with them! Be it 1 Pen, 10 Pens, 100 Pens 1000 Pens, etc. Initially, I found my Pen Collection grew not because they were "pretty" but I was seeking out a writing experience that was not met by my first and numerous acquisitions. It was frustrating. Now, it's a combination of the desire to try new writing experiences. In search of, perhaps a pen/nib that better fits my writing style and a writing experience that gives me even more joy. Myself, I have a certain amount of funds im ablento invest in this hobby. I need to keep this in balance for balance in my life, which impacts my happiness. If I overextend myself, I won't be happy, I'll be stressed. Additionally, when I've owned what I feel is "too many pens" For Me, I feel overwhelm. Which is also not a happy feeling, and it diminishes my enjoyment of my hobby. It's not a specific number for me, it's a feeling. So I'll simply do my best to do what's right for Me and My Fountain Pen Collection for where I'm at on My Journey!

  • @thejournalhouse
    @thejournalhouse12 күн бұрын

    That’s true but Drew has over 40 pens that he owns he’s spoken about his collection many times in the past and even now and may have purchased more since the video originally aired he never said people shouldn’t or couldn’t have more than 10 and yes I realized you never said he did however … he was merely answering a question someone wrote in and asked him for his opinion I considered it a great layout for those whom are looking for a start collecting and perhaps don’t want to buy based off nerves and FOMO but by having a clear understanding of what is technically usable realistically some people don’t like falling down the rabbit do so I no non/sense blueprint is nice … when it comes to ink that’s my soft spot ❤

    I currently have a few, but I would say that I haven't really been so interested in the past. Traditionally, they were kind of known for distinctive and sometimes quite innovative designs, but not always in a good way. I would say that the quality has gone up a lot since the early 2000's. They had this old cam lock cap that would often work itself loose in one's pocket, and I remember some of the early magnetic closure pens getting corroded magnetic parts. Back then the build quality was not as good. I had one where the nib hit the inside of the cap and one that split just by the ink window. Both of these problems were fixed for free. All the ones I have now are recent production and I will say that the fit and finish has really gone up and the pens are quite functional and usable now. I think they really took off once they made the Homo Sapiens pens. The hook lock bayonet closure is one of my favorite cap mechanisms. That said, I still feel that the fit and finish lags behind others like Aurora. The nibs on Viscontis are a mixed bag. All four of mine had work done on them because they had trouble out of the box. Once they are tuned properly, they do write extremely well. It's nice that they have brought nib production in house, but I think that they might need to have someone who is more of a nib expert work with them to refine their process so they can produce consistent nibs. The nibs have sure improved, but it's not like Aurora where generally out of the box the nibs are excellent without any tuning needed. If you want something that has the fit and finish and super consistent nibs out of the box though, Pilot is really the way to go. Their fit and finish is really even nicer and cleaner than Montblanc's Meisterstück (I also have handled a lot of Montblancs and own them too). Super well polished and clean. The nibs are also more consistent than nearly any other maker out there The last thing is that Viscontis tend to be larger pens and being a pretty petite person myself, I tend to go for smaller pens. I have been enjoying my Homo Sapiens though and all of mine are the oversized variety

    Thank You so much for sharing this information! It's very interesting and helpful to understand Viscinti better in this way. It seems to me that their innovation has carried them to where they are, but their Quality Control Department didn't keep up. Glad to hear in a general way they are on the up and up! I recently acquired an Aurora, and it is immediately a favorite with me! I love the writing experience the nib has to offer! As much as I have regard for Pilots work, I definitely have a love for Italian Pens.

    Sailor Dragon Palace is a very lovely colour. Now that you mention it, I had forgotten when I got this fountain pen the nib was dry and scratchy from poor tine alignment. After tuning, I found the nib to be a delight, but without that extra step definitaly a disappointment from Sailor.

    Thank you! Yes, once this nib was tuned I found it an absolute delight to write with. I'm very disappointed that I had to send the pen back for repair because of the leaking. Interesting how we bond with these fountain pens, over their beauty and the writing experience they offer:)

    It’s very stunning 🤩 I was disappointed to hear the feedback so loudly during the writing sample <I cringe at that sound> For me, paying over $200.00 for a fine fountain pen, I expect it to not need to go to a nib meister right out of the box. I’ve got a couple of much much less expensive Sailors, one being an EF, and they write so silky smooth. I was sad to hear that this gorgeous pen was so scratchy 😮 It is very beautiful…such a great color combination! The ink looks really nice too! Thank you for sharing this experience 😊

    Thank you! It is a gorgeous pen, I really enjoy the color combination as well! In addition to the fountain pen's beauty, I found the nib a delight to write with. Though I did fid it "scratchy" out of the box, which is a great disappointment from Sailor and as you mentioned. Once tuned I greatly enjoyed the Sailor "feedback" which you hear in this video. I find this degree of feedback very pleasant to write with and it became one of my favorite writers because of that nib and that feedback. However, I completely understand how others that prefer very smooth nibs would find this degree of feedback unpleasant:) I have enjoyed some very smooth nibs also, like Omas.
