  Giacomini was an exceptional tenor, and it's surprising that he wasn't better known in the US. I've listened to opera off and on for many years and never heard of him until a year or so ago on KZread. One report said he wasn't "consistent", but from the recordings here I would put him high on the list of Opera Greats. If you want to hear a faultless Nessun Dorma, look for his Moscow 1989 concert. After 5 minutes of applause, Giancomini sang the aria again!

  To me, his voice is special, in that he somehow changed gears in the passagio, and seemed to have extreme facility in the upper register...even though he had such a big, dark voice.

  Esclarmonde was one of the first operas I ever saw! Joan Sutherland sang the title role. It was before the days of subtitles and, to be honest, I didn’t know what the hell was going on! But it was quite a spectacle, and I loved it.

  Amo e ascolterei Cavalleria e Silvano anche a testa in giù, ma sostengo che ci sia tanto, troppo di Pietro Mascagni da far uscire dai cassetti...manca la volontà di farlo, e poi molta parte del pubblico si lagna perchè a Teatro fanno sempre le stesse cose, appena compare un titolo "nuovo"... "eh non ci vado perchè non la conosco"...non tutti ma MOLTI

  My first introduction to this Opera was the Sutherland recording many years ago. It really has a lot of beautiful music. It must be a difficult production to do with the demanding singing, the big chorus, and all the magic scenes. I really appreciate this Teatro Regio di Torino performance as it was very elaborate, as this Opera really deserves.
