I bought Bradfordwhite water heater and after 6 months the pilot light is having trouble and not only that there are dark sooth appeared on my ceilings. My HVAC is 6 months old and I don't think that causes the issue and I think my water heater has lot of issues. I called the support but all they say is call a contractor and troubleshoot it with our technician. I've been dealing with this same pilot light issues for months and no fixed at all. They should had replaced my water heater at first having this problem.

There are typically two thermostats so it would be helpful to eliminate one or both as problems. I’ll look elsewhere for more definitive help with the thermostats

NTC Thermistor 10K at 25C with a B25/85 value of 3975. Really any B value within a couple hundred of that will work fine and B25/100 or B25/50 is about the same. Instead of a 3 wire, you can get two normal ones that match and wire two legs together. You can get them on digikey or even amazon and major brands include Vishay, TDK, and MMTL, but it's hard to mess up making a thermistor, so any brand is probably fine. This part should be under $10 and available separately instead of bundled with a $200 controller.

Great video and highly informative. I reviewed my BradfordWhite service manual which says the following in regards to diagnosing the heating ellement: "Reading should be 12.8 ohms (±6%) for a 240volt, 4500 watt element. A reading outside the range using the formula above (±6%), indicates a bad element and the element must be replaced." So I checked both upper and lower elements and my multimeter shows 12-13ohms initially and as I held the multimeter on the contacts the reading dropped to 9.5ohms after 4-5secs. Im not sure whether to go by the initial 12-13ohm reading or the 9.5ohm reading 5secs later. Do you think I have a problem here? The heater is the M250S6DS-1NCZZ and id about 15 years old. Thanks in advance for any further info.

I am not the expert here, but if the element is blown it should read as an open circuit and read infinite ohms. It might be that as the element ages, the resistance might change. V(voltage)=I(current) * R(resistance) therefore V/R= I. What this means with your reading is that the current would be a bit higher through the element since V(240) and R(9.5) are known things. I would think that if that current is not tripping the breaker, its fine.

Hi. Thanks for video. Quick question. My Bradford White water heater's pilot stays on on but the burners do not go on to heat the tank (even when I turn the knob to highest heat). Any idea what could be the problem?

  • @ragedigital

For anyone with a similar problem. Mine was the connector to the spark electrode wire that goes into the Honeywell housing. It's the white wire that sticks out and I'm sure gets bumped when walking by. It snapped, but the spark is strong enough to jump the gap to light the pilot, but not enough to allow the pilot sensor to know the pilot light is burning. I replaced the female spade connector on the white wire and was back in business.

I have a 5 flash error code. The water is always lukewarm. Your thermistor readings were almost exact. I have one thermistor reading 5.33K and another reading 5.70K. Both indicate a water temp of near 100 degrees, and the actual water temp is 98-100 degrees. What is the max allowable difference for these readings? And why are the thermistors not replaceable?

Thanks. This was an excellent internal look at the temperature sensor (thermistor) providing dual resistances to the circuit board. I can generally see why it may be difficult to replace known sensor in that it appears to be permanently mounted thru the gas controller hardware. I assume then, that a new thermistor is part of a new controller assembly. Thanks for the clear technical details. I currently have a code five flashing, as I had noticed our water temperature had been fluctuating, which caused me to look at the controller. (As a side note, I keep my water heater temp. set very high, to maximize availability of hot water for baths and showers. I wonder if this practice contributed to a sensor failure). Anyway, after confirming with this video, that I may NOT be able to simply replace the sensor, I'll try the circuit board reset first, to determine if the error code magically goes away. If the code returns, I'll then remove the cover and read the resistances to test the sensor. This will confirm that is the cause of my problem. Thanks Again.

Excellent breakdown so I can understand better. So code 4 is a complete shutdown and now on KZread homeowners have finally found out how to do the reset. As I plumber I replaced two valves under warranty instead of telling me this reset measure. There may be a problem with overheating due to physical situations with heater air flow that are not getting remedied by me replacing the valve each time. So it's important that the heater is properly vented to code, has enough intake air, and the filter is not clogged on the bottom.
