seems like a normal day in canada😂
I carry some small packets of Petroleum Jelly, (similar in size to Catsup packets found in fast food joints). When I want to use a piece of Jute Twine as a fire starter or tinder, I cut off a couple of inches of the Jute Twine and rub Petroleum Jelly over it increasing the flammability and extending the burn time.
Shhhhh don't tell no one about one hand opening. I have a master craft box cutter makes sense you would want three point contact while opening on ladders ect still illegal
Reminds me of a fisherman’s vest. But, they are a lot more expensive and usually have much smaller pockets. One word of advice, don’t carry anything hard in the middle back pocket located near your tail bone, only soft stuff. People have fallen and become paralyzed from it. A lot of carpenters keep their hammers there on there belts out of convenience but it’s not a good practice. Power linemen don’t even have a loop there on their saddles because if they fall from height they’re done for.
Good tip! Thanks for the comment
I'm in Nanaimo. Love the videos do you do courses ?
Yes I do One person at a time for 2 to 3 hrs at a time
Yes there is a lot you can get from the land. If you live by the ocean, you can get more! Fortunately on Vancouver Island we have both. Slugs, ew! Suppose I should try them before passing judgment. Oregon grape jelly is most awsome! As kids we used to peel off the outer layers of bullrush and eat the pith, it is really quiet nice.
If you try the slugs make sure you clean and cook them properly...but as you say why when you live next to the ocean!!!
This list is useful too, what you guys think?: *survivalinnature.com/top-10-best-survival-tactical-pants-for-men?Ru* It really helped me choose the right item 2:18
Hope all is well and you are staying safe. I keep checking back to see if you are active. Looking forward to new content on the channel. This is one beautiful island!
Working on it!
And is the surplus store you mentioned still open?
Yes it is
Awesome kit... I’m a sucker for military surplus being a vet. Like the tiger stripe shirt you have also!
Thanks got them at Coombs surplus
Vib I suspect you could use chicken carcass that you would normally throw out vs edible pieces. How often do run across bears and Cougars that can cause problems in a bush camp? Thanks for the Good videos
Yah chicken carcass works just as good...so far really lucky with the cougars and bears....tracks everywhere but still alive
Very cool 🤠
no one is panning an ounce of gold a day! could take a pro a month to pan that much!
Yah for sure...Got a speck though...
Hello...nice vid...good to know limits......maybe that dish works best with fuel cubes
Yes it does!
Lower the pot to reduce the burn time - less lost heat and more efficient use of fuel ... you really want the pot to be close enough for the tips of the burner flame to tickle it .... :-)
Thanks for the tip
Great video! Thank you 👍
Glad you liked it!
Cool video! Thanks for sharing. We would like to try this fishing activity today too. Where you at in the video? What spot of the river will you recommend? We are also in Nanaimo ^.^
Go to Nanaimo lakes road and anywhere along there is good Crawfishing
Okay I’m hooked.... I live 15 minutes away from Nanaimo River... I’m going to find the gold
gotta put the flavouring into the noodles before you take the water out dude
Nope...like it without the water in it..try it
Awesome channel Steve, love the vids! Keep em coming! 🤙
Glad you like them!
Love me some o dat fry bread
haha
Do you think a German Army folding sleeping mat would fit in back pouch?
yes i think it would
Your tank is upside down that’s why it’s going out.
Yah I figured that out later, thanks though
I disagree. I have 2 pair of vidda pro, and the numbers gaiter & smock. All have been phenomenal. Especially the numbers series. Of course they will get burn holes ... they are cotton and polyester. If you don’t want burn holes you really have 2 options (being clothed). Wool or a blend with fr in it (arcteryx leaf might have it). You wear fjallraven for anything but near a fire. Wool is your ultimate bushcrafting friend ... period
very informative , thank you , a better camera/focus would help
that's great...i'll tell Bridgette my wife it wasn't for nothing haha
I have one, but aluminum sheet is broken because of corrosion.. Can i replace with only aluminum sheet? (Not same as aluminum sheet like that)
Probably, I bought this lantern to use with thick tin foil if needed. Haven't tried it yet but should work
Great review. I was just about to pull the trigger on some of these. Dogged a bullet.
Yup..I sure made a lot of people upset with this one, glad I could help
Galldang how many salal berries did you pack in before turning the camera on? LMBO I thought I was watching king fu tv for a moment. Lol Also, spearhead against a bear? Good luck with that. Bow staff, now that is certainly an option Good information btw. I enjoy my hiking staffs. Have several and select them beforehand depending on the season and circumstances.
a lot of berries for sure..as for a spear against a bear..too true but much better than nothing
This gentleman completely misses the point. They are TRECKING pants. They are supposed to be comfortable, and provide stable body temp and humidity, etc. The kind of durability he is talking about is simply not necessary. "bushcraft" for him means working in the wild in some form or another. Trecking is movement from point A to point B. See how the tool is different for different purpose? The pants you suggest are horrible regarding temperature/humidity/comfort/movement restriction, etc. You're not supposed to spend your days trecking on your knees.
You are correct they are great trekking pants for sure
I seriously question this review...I own two pairs of vidda pros...hunting, camping, fishing, hiking...they take every bit of abuse I have thrown at them and still look brand new. All I can think is he got a knock off pair...because they are the best pants I've ever owned...and I'm a construction contractor.
They are not knockoffs but they just didn't hold up...maybe just unlucky
Well there goes your warrenty
haha I guess so eh
Great video!. New to Nanaimo, can you recommend where I could go to try to catch a few?. Thank you.
All along the Nanaimo river....Nanaimo lakes rd to south forks go to the end of south forks and the nanaimo river rd ...runs along the nanaimo river..all sorts of trails going to the river on that road
@@vancouverislandbushcraft4879 Awesome!, I will check it out. Thank you.
That's cool wish the wood was just a bit smaller did you try using a key or other random objects to strike it and have the same results?
It is actually pretty small ...so far it has not hindered my keychain at all...haven't tried anything other than the striker but any metal with 90 degree spine should work...it is a normal ferrorod
Slick & Compact enough for a key chain carry, Thanks Steve ! Look @ The Sub's ! ATB T God Bless
Very nice
For hard work, no matter what the work is called, work wear should be used. As ”Heavy duty” pick up trucks would be scrap after some months in a mining pit where mining trucks should be used, high quality Fjällräven hiking pants should be used for hiking, work pants should be used for working.
Well said !!!!
Hi dear! It was a very nice bushcraft and bivouac session. A cool atmosphere during the footage. I subscribe to your wonderful channel. Cheers from Belgium. David
Thanks and welcome to the channel
Hay Steve; Look @ Them Sub's ! Glad ya got camp buttoned up nicely ! Be Well, Friend ! ATB T God Bless
I know right...I'm like the bigwigs now haha
Once you get the brew going then it is home again
So true ...home is where you hang your beer haha
Too bad about the bivouac, but glad to see you out enjoying it anyway. I moved from Fraser Valley to the Kootenays. Lots of snow here! Loving it though. Keep on keepin' on!
Yah heard it was coming down pretty good over there...Would definately need a stronger bivouac there
Since when does 99% isopropyl leave soot? I have used alcohol, both denatured and iso for years and have never experienced soot.
I use 90% as that is the highest I could find...probably the 10% impurities I guess...not sure but lots of soot
You are spot on regarding the fire holes. Had mine 6 months and many small holes from camp fires.
Yah it got pretty bad at the end ….like wearing swiss cheese haha
Make me relax watching your video.i wish you have a buddy like a dog so much fun I guess with you.
It is very relaxing...a great way to reset
That's a geto trap love it.
But it sure works great!!!!
@@vancouverislandbushcraft4879 I bet I seen a gentleman use a bucket with flaps at the bottom worked as the same concept as a box trap I was impressed it actually worked.
It is amazing what you can do if you have no money but a great imagination
@@vancouverislandbushcraft4879 iv subscribe to your videos now after watching a few looking forward to seeing some of your new ideas.
do you think you can harvest cray fish in the winter like january and febuary?
Good question, I'm not sure...maybe I should try it
@@vancouverislandbushcraft4879 im thinking about coming to nanamo river , do you have any other spots for me to try? also what area are you in along the river? - dawn
i live in vancouver
I was just at the end of southforks road....Pretty much any place will yield huge catches
Wouldn't want to be buschrafting in carhartts, especially those ones, though. Restrictive, heavy, don't breath as well, etc. Durable as hell, though.
Durable as hell is what I'm going for
well that is exactly my idea if the world gets nuked
Nothing like a bowl of glowing stinging nettles for lunch
Actual relevant info starts at 1:30
Weird because you're the only one in the whole YT who had bad experience with this pants.
Wow!!!!
"Literally..." You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
Got the reference too funny
