The first time I played New Leaf was in 2020. I couldn't afford the switch, so my boyfriend landed me his old 3DS and I played this game everyday for a year. Nintendo didn't shut down the servers yet, so I experienced this amazing sense of community this game creates. It was my biggest companion during the dark times of the pandemic.

As I sit here, impatiently waiting for my New 3DS from Japan to ship, I've been thinking a lot about New Leaf. In 2013, I was only 7 years old. In both the Gamecube version of AC and the DS one, I only ever played the game because my older brother did. He would always own the islands, upgrade them, make them look pretty and fill up the museum's. I, on the other hand, would only ever log on to talk to villagers and make clothes. I am an artist after all, and this was my first technical exposure to digital art before I got my own DSi in 2013, same year. Once 2020 came along (pre-covid) my parents had the money to splurge a little on all of us kids, and we all simultaneously agreed (apart from one who won't shut up about it to this day) to all get 2DS's from walmart because they were cheap and all came with a mario game. This was just in time for quarantine and the new release of New Horizons. Since we had all bought 2DS's at the beginning of the year, my family couldn't afford a switch, let alone the ACNH switch that I wanted. So, left without much option but wanting to be in on the fun, I stole my brother's old 2DS (mine broke lol and his already had the game, again) and started up, for the first time, my own town in Animal Crossing. And, as much as I hated the limitations in comparison to New Horizons, I still had fun. I still remember laying down on the couch on my back, past 6 PM and jumping up in joy when I caught a shark for the first time on the island. Right before that year, my older brother had moved out to live with my uncle and he wasn't there to witness this momentous occasion. It made me realize just how much I was missing when he would build the towns all by himself. Though when I saw him next, we chatted about the game and how cool it is to see the museum so full and stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love New Horizons. It brought to the franchise more of my favorite aspect of the game since I was a kid. However, I've gotten older in that time, and grown to appreciate the more homely parts of the game. Being part of a community, using the tools you have to be a little more creative and make your town truly yours. I was dogged on for playing New Horizons on my switch lite at work a few months ago, and I get why! The game was really hyped up because of when it came out, but without the trend lenses it just seems boring and monotonous, especially if you don't care about decorating your island. Summer's coming up now, its 2024. Four years after covid hit. Four years since I last played the game, and ten years since I last played with my brother. I went from a little 7 year old learning about subtraction and negative numbers to a 17 year old that has to know what I want to do with my life, what I'm gonna study, where I'm gonna work, where I'm gonna live, how much money I need in order to live and still somehow keep up with my peers! 10 years is usually a big jump in time for someone, but I think 7 to 17 is crazy. Though, that makes this game a little more important to me in this way. Because, my little villager is also moving to a whole new place with no money and nothing to their name. But, you figure it out, day by day. And, my brother and I are both older now and (weirdly) had the exact same idea around the same time to buy a modded 3DS console. Despite being in his early 20's, he's still figuring this whole adult thing out too. Maybe this summer is the one where, for the first time, I'll be able to experience the game in full alongside my brother before I go off to college all the way on the other side of the country. I've literally never fully filled the museum, gotten golden roses or even fully upgraded the Nook store before so maybe he'll help me with that 😭

I still remember my first time catching a shark, so it was really neat reading your version of that experience! A modded 3DS is a great idea, and it sounds like you've got some pretty fun plans for this summer! It's crazy how fast time flies, but try not to stress about it too much. I'm 22 and in college, and I'm *still* trying to figure out what to do and where to go in life! It honestly comes to everyone at different times, and the best thing we can all do is live in the moment and enjoy life! You're absolutely right, you just have to take it day-by-day. Enjoy your new 3DS! I'm sure you'll make tons of great memories with your brother this summer! Good luck in college later this year, too! You'll do great!

I don’t have the heart to pick up new leaf again. I had the game cartridge and still do, I never will get rid of it, but my 3ds broke in early 2016. It feels like a time capsule now, to a time before my mom died. To a time before everything. I haven’t touched it since but it still has my old boyfriends account (who lived w me at 13-15, weird situation but whatever), my old friends houses from games they’ve probably lost years and years ago still in the HHA showcase. It all is too much but I’ll keep the cartridge forever. And the memories in my heart. I’m going on 23, but that cartridge forever serves as a time capsule, a preservation of a much more innocent 14 year old me will forever exist through that New Leaf cartridge.

I can’t wait for the next Animal Crossing game for the next Switch. I’ll be waiting in line, or I’ll try. My brother got New Horizons, and the day after my birthday when I got my Switch Lite, we were about to go to GameStop to get games, and I put the game card in and started. I’m resetting my island today since I’ve not been playing for a while, and this summer maybe I’ll play a lot more.

I got ‘em all off of eBay! The screen and shell came together in a V5 IPS kit, the buttons are FunnyPlaying brand, and the silicone pads were some generic brand I found. Good luck modding! :)

Amazing video! I got this game when I was maybe 7 or 8? Have loads of memories of staying up late at night playing this game, even up till 13 playing it with my younger brother once he was old enough. Still play it to this day. A useful tool for making multiple towns is Checkpoint in case you ever get bored of your town and want to restart without losing your town.

My first animal crossing game Watched Zakkscottgaming and fell in love with it. I just remember waiting until 8am to get the shops. And hearing that main street song. Going to the island, going to my friends islands. Figuring the game out for myself. I sometimes wonder how I played the game so much back then doing little things but being so entertained. I remember at night I’d wait till 8pm to go to the island and catch all the beetles From catching bugs and fish to researching Gracie grace and how to upgrade tnt mart, or how to get the cafe or police station, or a perfect town. Also getting path QR codes and golden items. Even doing the duplication glitch with the WiFi switch on the side with some of my mates. Met some of them through miiverse and to this day we still speak. we would play this game. And just chat and have fun. I miss it. I hope they port it to switch because I would play this game so much.

good stuff man. Glad to see others are still nostalgic about New leaf. I hope you catch lightning in a bottle once more. If you want this to be your career you will keep at it and hold true to your video style. Its authentic and has a sort of innocence to it that many people like me appreciate.
I got New Leaf as a present for my 12th or 13th birthday back then on a Cartridge for my 3DS and I am still playing it to this day, marking my ten year anniversary with this game 😂

Still play it to this day. A useful tool for making multiple towns is Checkpoint in case you ever get bored of your town and want to restart without losing your town.

My first animal crossing game Watched Zakkscottgaming and fell in love with it. I just remember waiting until 8am to get the shops. And hearing that main street song. Going to the island, going to my friends islands. Figuring the game out for myself. I sometimes wonder how I played the game so much back then doing little things but being so entertained. I remember at night I’d wait till 8pm to go to the island and catch all the beetles From catching bugs and fish to researching Gracie grace and how to upgrade tnt mart, or how to get the cafe or police station, or a perfect town. Also getting path QR codes and golden items. Even doing the duplication glitch with the WiFi switch on the side with some of my mates. Met some of them through miiverse and to this day we still speak. we would play this game. And just chat and have fun. I miss it. I hope they port it to switch because I would play this game so much.
