Hi Richard Your video really struck a chord with me. After lots of looking around, everything from the Ysolette to the Texas Leica, you talked about enjoying composing on the ground glass. Learning by studying and close observation rang so true. I plan to get a VH in a couple of months. Then I can start up the learning curve and enjoy the view as I go.

Richard! I love my Yashica! Did you know Davy Crockett Used one of these Yashica cameras during the siege of the Alamo in 1836!? Using just one roll of Kodak Eastman 5222 black and white 35mm motion picture film he shot enough sprocket holes to stave off General Santa Anna and his army of 2000 men for THIRTEEN DAYS! Thank you so much for sharing! More people need to learn about the Yashica and its rich AMERICAN history of nearly 200 years. The Yashica mat 124G has 2 loading marks that you match with the arrow on the film when loading the film, a Green arrow on the bottom of the camera and a red arrow on the back which is the one that you used in the video, the green mark labelled 12 frames is for 120 film, and the red one labelled 24 frames is for 220 film, 220 film is no longer made so far as I am aware so you should use the green mark on the camera bottom for your 120 film.

Thank you for your informative comment. Much appreciated. I know better but certainly wasn't clear about it this time. In the previous video, I did detail it correctly. I'll see if I can go back and clarify it. Although 220 has long been discontinued, I still have many rolls that I use frequently. My go-to film is Portra 400. I was pleasantly surprised! to learn that by rating it at 320 the exposures are still pretty consistent...such a forgiving film!

Are you aware of anything you should not do, to prevent damaging the mechanism of the SL66? The manual seems a little complicated, but after holding the camera in my hands i feel that it‘s actually not such a pain to use. I‘m just worried because i hear a lot of stories about the SL66 being very easy to jam up/break, and difficult to repair.. A guide on how to properly use it, and what to avoid, would be very useful..

No, original Rollei Bayonet I lens shades do not fit the Yashica, material thickness of the outer bayonet is slightly different (thicker on the Yashica Mat-124 G). But yes, Rollei filters work well, and more modern lens shades for Yashica and others do also work on Rolleicords and early Rolleiflexes with bayonet I. That said - I too would highly recommend buying a Mat-124G if wanting to try TLRs and medium format film (stay away from the Rolleicord up do model V, or other old simple TLRs, as their focusing screens mostly have no Fresnel lens and thus are dark and hard to use).

@@richardmasseyphotography My pleasure. I actually have a Rolleicord III and slightly prefer the look of the Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 3.5/75mm to the modern Yashinon 3.5/80mm, but the focusing screen on the Rolleicord isn't fun (usable in the center, but very dark to the edges, which makes composition hard).

Great video - it seems like you can only zone focus with this camera. I currently own a 1951 Voightlander Bessa II with the 105mm f3.5Color Skopar lens. It shoots only 6x9 (Which I'm fine with) but I was looking for an upgraded alternative (Not the Bessa III) I really like the rangefinder experience, especially when using a magnified focus window like I have on my Leica IIIf. 62mm lens seems like it may be too wide for 6x9. Is zone focus the only way to focus this camera? - maybe I missed it in the video. also - you now have a new subscriber

I did that conversion with a Graflex SLW, a compact 'pancake' camera. The flaw in the Graflex was the older 47mm Super Angulon and the problematic focus mechanism. I upgraded the Super Angulon to a more modern version attached with a German helical focus. It was supposed to be a hiking landscape camera, but I ended up exporting it to an interested buyer in China . . . for over $1000 . . . back around 2000.
