    Nice. I find the little 3800kV stock motors that come with these to be a bit lacking as well. Mine flies okay, launches are scary since it 'dips' before rising up, but after half a dozen flights, it feels like there's some play in the bearings and it 'howls' like crazy on launch. I do have one of those talon motors floating around somewhere. But I've got to stick to 3S for now, since I invested in a few 3S lipos. Weirdly I can't find any of those stock 3800kV motors anywhere; bit of a headscratcher working out what to replace it with.

    Yep I agree. I tried one hole on my ammo belt starting at (uk 4mm) and it didn't really do anything. Tried 4.5mm and it started to take the flanges slightly. The 4.8mm (which is near as damn it a 3/16) smoothed the hole out perfectly BUT the pellet moves in the belt hole and can fall out. I also checked the claim that the flanges damage the pellet - 100% they do - I pushed a pellet through and there were 4 clear marks on the head and dome of an excite .177 pellet. I did it again on the same pellet reoriented and there were 4 more.

    I recently picked up a FX-61. Big, light, a bit flexi. I am putting pencil to napkin to modernize it without changing the good things. Everything is on the table. Shave the foam blocking the motor/prop. Twin Tractor? Arduplane? DIY servo retracs?

  • @JD_1

  • @skyforce1983
    @skyforce19834 ай бұрын

    If you do decide to remove and fill in the spaces you can use a thin sheet of paper and trace the existing shapes exactly and then transfer it to spare foam and then after go over it smoothly with a blade then use drywall spackle and sand everything and you won’t be able to notice anything once you cover it you’ve mentioned a million times about the X-5 and I’m happy you got it i laughed when i saw the FC i was like dam that’s old school 🤣 that’s even older than my Eagletree i use one things for sure it’ll fly better today once your done because of the amount of weight loss it’ll get shortening the wires smaller lighter motors new inav fc and the crossfire weigh it first before anything this way you can compare apples yesterday to apples today with newer technology

  • @JD_1
    @JD_14 ай бұрын

    It will be a lot lighter for sure. Just by changing out the motor and prop. It's 900 something grams now without the battery. I believe I can shave off close to 200 maybe 250 grams just by changing out the components. Will be very nice. But this plane likes alot of nose weight. So i will have fun designing a p&t for it. May do a retract landing gear of some type on it 🤔

  • @AerialWaviator

    Awesome find! Some TLC and it will love you back. ♥👍 One possible option for telemetry might be to add telemetry using a 2nd receiver with Crossfire, or ELRS by only connecting Tx, (no Rx) in parallel with with connected Tx/Rx of DragonLink (I have not tried, but though would make for interesting experiment). Adding an optical isolator on the 2nd Rx line would ensure electrical isolation (they <$1). Give you something to think about, as a possible hardware solution. INAV might even have a config option to pass out telemetry on a secondary UART, which would eliminate need for optical isolator.

  • @JD_1
    @JD_14 ай бұрын

    Grand ideal. Thank you! I'm honestly hoping that inav will work now with streaming telemetry thru Dragonlink. But telemetry is honestly not high on my list, considering i only use it today for audible information coming from radio. So we will see. I'm hoping for the best. I'm still debating on the role of this setup. It's more of a sentimental and collection piece for me. But I for sure want it to be fast and efficient. Probably more on the higher cruise speed side of the house. So I know I asked you this before... But when are you going to share some footage 🤔 I know you are very knowledgeable, and you comment on all the known people in the hobby videos... This must be like your 2nd account huh 🤔😂 I would never tell your secert... Who are you?

    Nice video man!, thanks for taking the time to explain. Really appreciated 👍 I gotta question about the vtx voltage... Do you find the vtx runs hotter on the higher voltage? I've been running mine off of the FC, so getting a supposed ~9v, I figured it might run hotter if I went with vbatt if it had a linear reg in there, or does it not make much difference as long as it got good airflow - cheers dude

  • @JD_1
    @JD_14 ай бұрын

    No. A vtx at full transmitting power will always run hot. Which is normal. Airflow is the key to success. And pit mode or low transmitting power while sitting disarmed. Thank God for smart audio 😂 Back in the day, we would have to manually switch from low power to high before launch. While we waited for gps count to rise and preflight checks. Many flights started out at lower power and had to turn around immediately to land to change to full power 🤦🏾‍♂️🤣

  • @threebadmicefpv
    @threebadmicefpv4 ай бұрын

    @@JD_1 Cool! thanks for that man👍 I'm gonna give going straight to vbat on analog next time it actually stops raining here, 💯on the smart audio, yeah I turn it up as needed so I can squeeze every last watt out of the battery. I got a walksnail setup over xmas, and I have to keep the vtx unplugged while I get a GPS fix (on a f405-wmn as no user switch) - even in standby it starts getting real hot, real quick, so in kind of a step backwards. I don't think I'll be replacing my analog stuff anytime soon though, WS is a bit pricey and I like the very visual warning you get with analog when your signals getting low, also 2 separate receivers no problem, I always fly with goggles and a spare receiver/screen just in case the goggles decide to die on me - cheers dude!

    @theroc4954 ай бұрын

    @JD_1 ...thank you sir I've been flying many years but never really fpv, flying a mavic pro is the closest. I have several different platforms and also built a ground station. I originally started with crossfire equipment but could never get mavlink over bluetooth or wifi to really work. So I built two planes using pixhawk cube fc, had everything communicating fine, fpv worked great, but no mavlink. So now I have dragonlink and I'm having trouble understanding how to wire it correctly, there's no diagram or youtube to illustrate...so I've been stuck

  • @JD_1
    @JD_14 ай бұрын

    @theroc495 it's funny you say that. Cause I found it easy to set up mavlink with crossfire. But it was very difficult with Dragonlink. And I flew with Dragonlink for years before I switched. Lmbo The only issue I had setting up Dragonlink with mavlink is the fact I used inav and not ardupilot. Dragonlink was based off of ardupilot. Crossfire was made with inav in mind. So if you need help setting up Dragonlink, you will have to dig around the internet for instructions. Search through old videos on KZread or go to the rcgroup page for Dragonlink. That's is where the real answer is. Great community there. The owner of DL will usually respond to your questions. I'm honestly behind time with Dragonlink. Despite being a tester of the gear in the past. I just flew it without mavlink. And it's still my choice pick for my longer range missions. With crossfire at distance, the mavlink is hit and miss. But I have seen Dragonlink using mavlink working 💪🏾 at some serious range. Today I just rely on the osd feed. I use to setup antenna trackers and extra.. But I learned how to fly within the ground station point of view.

  • @theroc495
    @theroc4954 ай бұрын

    @JD_1 ...wow...I did get in touch with the guys from dl but I really didn't get what I needed...I asked bonefied pirate (Keith) since he uses dragonlink and he gave me some info for wiring up matek fc, but not pixhawk...so here's the deal my brother JD, I don't think I can fly with my goggles, I think I'll get motion sickness quick, so my goal was to fly with mission planner and use the live map and my video feed to my PC. Ardupilot is so advanced, I haven't flown to confirm, but that's all I hear. So I'd have to fly with monitors once out of sight (I can feel my self clench up just typing that:)...I'm 64, flown forever, but just haven't done those fov flights...LIKE YOURS, IM JEALOUS !!!

Problem appeared during the first turn in cruise mode, I had once this throttle up during turns in cruise mode, long time ago and changed the FC angle or the CLI nav_fw_pitch2thr (cannot remember) but if you didn't change INAV that's not the problem. Other item: during landing you see the shadow of the plane with a freewheeling turning prop? No motor brake? And two prop blades turning? Well , questions remains 😁

  • @JD_1

    Nope. I haven't touched any setting in inav. And that was the 2nd turn made when this happened. I never use motor brake on any plane. I will have to look at the footage again, but will be hard to tell if one of the blades is missing or not in the shadow.

    @@JD_1 Pusher props with motor braking on just before landing are most of the times rotating until the point of least wind force, which is the horizontal position. For me the max possible motor brake setting in the PWM esc or in the BLHeli settings in case DShot is possible, works best for the fast wings. If the prop is still rotating during low throttle, the changes of breaking a prop are much bigger. Worth a try, cost you nothing and can save you a few props, maybe.
