What size column wraps are those? I have some 6x6 posts I want to wrap in black wraps would the superior 6x6 wraps work or do I need to go with 8x8 wraps?

  • @AMAYERICAN

8x8 wraps for 6x6 posts, pack out post where railing attaches for your screws to anchor into, and wrap the post with zip tap/ butyl tape as the wood treatment in green treat will react with the aluminum wraps if they come in contact with one another. 👍

Working on a front porch renovation, completely redoing the deck frame and decking swapping out the posts and I assumed there would be a beam underneath the “box beam” totally surprised me when I did a small cut out and found it was hallow haha. Did you do the same technique for the sides as well or is the front what’s holding all the weight mostly? Planning on doing exactly what you did here but not sure if I need to add some beams to support the sides or just adding the beam to the front would be sufficient. Any advice would be awesome, good video man!

Thanks ! And I was shocked as well, I did add a doubled up 2x8 as well on the sides to help reinforce/ secure to the house. Isn’t necessary unless you have a hip roof though. Advice is take your time, build a temp wall to secure the load. Cannot emphasize adequately bracing and supporting the load enough for safety reasons obviously. Use a level line and bottle jacks to take out any sags. Use structural screws (GRKS) #10x 3 1/8 And just take your time. You can message me on instagram if you need any help! Been doing deck resurfacing for 17 years and seeing as most of the stain/sealer is well bonded.....you should be using a drum sander ! The result is amazing and when you're in business the time saved is quite justified. The orbital is okay for decks that are faded grey or most of the old stain is gone but painted or stain sealed requires a drum sander.

Hey pal, you are on the right track. Here are a few things to consider from a company that does about 75 - 100 deck stains per summer. First have the customer remove all their items from around the deck ... ie hose reels and lawn chairs. Clean the cracks between all the flooring pieces with a compressor (thats where the dirt and gummy items are coming from, gumming up the sandpaper.) I would typically strip that deck first day and sand the next. Much of the overly applied existing stain and protector will fall off with a good stripper making your sanding so nice and clean. And yes, always buy loads of sand paper and just return what you don't use (you're returning the sander so it's not like it's an extra tip). The other thing to remember is this is an outdoor deck. 120 is a bit fine. I am usually 80 grit after the stripping of the existing. No need to polish the deck like an interior hardwood floor. Great start pal. You will do well with your conscious effort of improvement.

The person who framed wasn't a framer nor am I so I don't know if that was an issue. I did shim out the hinge sides Gary Katz style so it was Plumb af. Again. Could I be effing up because I don't do them routinely? Yes. Are they coming from the factory with the hinges not set in the mortises correctly at times? Yes. I need to look for that before I start I reckon. I also feel as if they could send them out with beefier hinge screws because of the weight. I've seen varying opinions on setting a long screw in the hinges. What's your take? That is all. Time to layout my domino pattern for this lighting thing I'm making

If the deck is relatively new the stuff should stick just fine. When I first used it our deck was about 20 yrs old. The deck is about 2.5 feet off the ground. What was happening was the decking would get saturated with moisture from underneath the deck and that was what was causing the deck over to peel up in sheets. Very frustrating. They say they addressed the issue but there is just no was the stuff will adhere to wood that consistently fills with moisture. The new deck boards that I had put down prior to using the Deck over were holding the stuff just fine. Again, because the those boards were still well treated to repeal the moisture.

I just had a shocking encounter with a Ridgid saw. OK, it was at a pawn shop but it was still wrapped in shrink wrap and the manual was still in a plastic bag. But, what a mess this thing was. Loads of plastic. The gears for the saw blade and tilt were big crude plastic that wouldn't turn. When I finally got the thing too .45 degrees it was way off from the tape. If you adjusted the extention table and locked it, it still moved. Again, this was at a pawn shop for some reason. So, I saw a DW 745 this afternoon. I drove a pretty long way to get it. I'm sure I'm going to like it. Oh, yes, the Ridgid does have a 1 3/8" arbor so you can install a dado blade. That's what inspired my hunt. But, the heck with it, there's a couple of other ways to make dados.

Thank you very much for the very useful video. I have a Hitachi C10FL that has given very good service for more than 15 years, but it is getting older and I can no longer get replacement parts for it. Plus, it is big and somewhat difficult to store and move around my carport. I was looking into a replacement and was attracted to the DeWalt (I have excellent success with DeWalt tools) but then I saw an add on Home Depot that offered at combination of a Ridgid table saw with a Ridgid compound mitre saw and mitre saw stand for only slightly more than the DeWalt table saw by itself. Bright shiny object there! I don't really need a new mitre saw, but it was an very attractive deal. However, after watching your video and seeing that the Ridgid would be less satisfactory as a replacement for my Hitachi, I think I am going to go with the DeWalt.
