    this is great! cant wait to get mine :) question, regarding the ESC, is there a lot of space for a max10 from Hobbywing for eg? or is it quite tight?

  • @KaiCityRC
    @KaiCityRCКүн бұрын

    With a normal height servo you have a space around 60x50mm in which to mount the ESC and receiver. You can increase this by fitting a low profile servo or by mounting the receiver on top of the servo. Height wise anything up to 40mm will be fine. Much more than that and it *might* start to interfere with the body.

    There's a lot to like about the Lazer platform. 👍 I find it easy to drive and generally very easy to work on. About the only things I'm not too keen on are the e-clips holding the suspension pins in. Oh, and if I'm being really picky - getting to the motor mounting screws/setting the mesh can be a little awkward. Oh, and the L-R weight balance probably isn't ideal. Modern lipos are pretty light and I don't think mine balance out the weight of the motor, esc, servo and receiver. I don't have scale to verify though. 😁

    A really interesting run. To me , it looked like it was flying through the track and had smooth acceleration and smooth corner entry and exit but also smooth jump landing. Maybe to the point that it perhaps could compete with the xray and associated with some upgrades and tweaks. And let's not forget that the Lazer SB is based on a nearly 20 year old platform (Lazer ZX-5). Wondering how it would compare to the Xb4 and b74.

  • @KaiCityRC
    @KaiCityRCКүн бұрын

    I can't comment on how it would compare with a high end machine like the B74. But up against my YZ-4, with the right set up it would do alright. I don't think they'd be much of a difference in lap times. Well certainly not at my skill level anyway. But there would be a difference in durability.

  • @lowqualitytech1216
    @lowqualitytech1216Күн бұрын

    @@KaiCityRCConsidering how many Carbon fibre parts were made for the Lazer ZX-5 (shock towers , chassis etc) , I think that the durability shouldn't be a problem in the long run. Although, I think that the lazer is already durable on it's own.

    I was pleasantly surprised how well it did with only a few minor tweaks for carpet use. The 870c on the other hand was a right pain to get to perform well on high grip carpet. I found the Dirt Cross very easy to drive. My only complaint, if you call it that, was it seemed a little on the noisy side. But that's mostly due to me running an 870c for the past three months. That thing has to be one of the quietest 4WD's out there. 👍 Both the Dirt Cross and Dirt Master are going to be my go-to buggies for use at Carnosa's Fumotto outdoor track.

    I'd like to know how it compares to the Yokomo 870c and the Kyosho Optima Mid

  • @KaiCityRC
    @KaiCityRCКүн бұрын

    The 870c and Mid are far older designs, feature a lot more metal in their construction and use belt drives. They also cost significantly more than the Dirt Cross, so I'm not sure how meaningful a comparison would be. However, out of the box and purely from a performance stand point, I feel the Dirt Cross would have the edge. Especially on carpet.

    Thanks for the insight on this buggy, David! It just came into stock in Australia the other day, so I naturally placed an order straight away. Cannot wait to build it. Mine will be hopped up with Kyosho aluminium shocks, and some 3 racing alloy hingepin holders and rear hubs. It will be used in an Outlaw 4wd class (buggies designed or built between 2000-2015.) that my local club runs. It's a great class to run for all those cars that aren't modern enough to compete with the new stuff, or yet to be considered vintage.

  • @KaiCityRC
    @KaiCityRCКүн бұрын

    That Outlaw 4WD class sounds fantastic! The Dirt Cross would definitely do well in such a class. The kit shocks on the Dirt Cross are very much like those on the Dirt Master. They’re all plastic but rather good. I’ve had a set of triple caps waiting to replace them, but after a year still haven’t felt the need to. Alloy hinge pin braces are definitely something I’d want to replace if racing. That and a set of universals would be nice. Don’t forget the bearings for the steering and diffs. 👍

    Compared to a ZX-5 how much worse is it?

  • @KaiCityRC
    @KaiCityRC2 күн бұрын

    I'm not really in a position to give a fair assessment as I didn't build a kit ZX-5 back in the day. At the time I was heavily into nitro/on road. But I did pick up ZX-5 Readyset (RTR) for casual use. In a lot of ways that was exactly like this Dirt Cross. The Dirt Cross shares the same general design and a lot of the plastic parts appear to be identical. There are some key differences though - most notably being a lack of universals/CVD's, gear diffs instead of balls and all plastic shocks. It has been a few years since I ran my ZX-5, but to the best of my recollection this new Dirt Cross drives and performs much like it. 👍 That said, unless you're a very skilled driver I don't think the Dirt Cross would be competitive against modern high end 4WD's. Yokomo's M.O. or Associated B74, for example, are better performers and certainly more durable and crash resilient. But they are also considerably more expensive.

    Im at Carnosa RC Park’s indoor carpet track today with the Dirt Cross. It’s been quite a while since I ran any vintage release on a carpet track. But to me the Dirt Cross feels way more capable (box stock) than my Mid ever did. And it certainly handles better than the Super Dog Fighter. There’s some body roll in the corners and the diffs would benefit from some tuning. Considering its price point, overall I’m very impressed with the Dirt Cross both on dirt and carpet. 👍

    Awesome video David. You produce about the best RC footage. Surprised the car seems to have very little droop travel on suspension. It bottoms pretty hard and bounces off chassis. Are the shocks kit spec or did you go for a carpet setup?

  • @KaiCityRC
    @KaiCityRC4 күн бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words! 😊The suspension is all set up as per the manual, which I thought would be a good starting point as I plan to run it both outdoors and on carpet. There isn't a whole lot of droop with these settings, but with some changes you could get more suspension travel out of the stock components. I put 400 weight oil in the dampers and I had the ride height set pretty low for a better stance when filming, which didn't help. However, the bottom of the chassis is completely unmarked which leads me to think that it looks worse in the footage than it actually is. I have a set of Kyosho triple caps to install, but I wanted to run it (as close to) stock as possible for a fairer assessment. 👍

    The pink really pops. Photos and video do not do the color justice. Unfortunately, PS-29 does not stick well to the body.😩 I've since learned that it is a common issue with that color. The paint finish is almost like fine sand/sugar. It rubs off really easily. Such a shame as I would like to use the color more often. 😔 I've almost completely covered the inside of the shell in protective tape to try and add a little durability to the finish.

    Basically Kyosho took one of their older 4WD chassis (Lazer ZX-5), replaced (almost) all the alloy parts with (high quality) plastic to reduce cost, added a retro styled body & wheels and behold the Dirt Cross is born. Well, to give it its full name: Lazer SB Dirt Cross. They did the exact same thing with the Dirt Master, only with their older 2WD Ultima chassis. The Dirt Cross is now the second buggy in the SB Series. The Dirt Master has done really well here, so it was only a matter of time before we saw them follow a similar recipe to produce a 4WD version.

  • @KaiCityRC

    My experience is the Sport Tuned was quicker when I ran it in my Beetle. The problem was it didn't like the gearing and ran very hot, especially so on grass. And that was with nimh packs. With lipo it would be hotter. When you build the 2WD Scorpion-based kits you're given two options for gearing - 6.9:1 or 8.3:1. I always opt for the 6.9 and it pairs well with the torque from the 30T Le Mans motor. If I were to run a Sport tune (or even super stock) definitely run the lower gearing. 👍
