    I like the stiffness of Old Holland vs MH or Vasari. Typically, I only mix with refined walnut oil because I like my secondary layers to stay wet longer. When I need a more buttery paint, I simply add a drop of walnut oil and shake the blob of paint up to the consistency I'm after. I use a lot of paint, so I don't worry about oil separation in the tubes. I do mix refined linseed for the 1st composition layer to dry more quickly. Except that doesn't get tubed, just goes on my palette. Most of the time my 1st layer is only inorganic pigments and is more like a stain than a paint on the canvas.Whatever paint left on my palette, I mix my walnut oil paints right into them. I'm not against adding other binders, except they'er mostly for only creating greater shelf life. I much rather work with pure pigment and oil. I 1st started painting with oil 40 years ago before tube paint became so buttery. I understand why artist like it so buttery today because everything has become extreme grab and go. When the paint is so wet that I can't drag my brush or knife to get the effect I'm after it is very frustrating. I never worry about running out of paint because I can mix small amounts in 20 mins or less with the muller. At the end of a paint session, I cover my palette with saran wrap. I have very little waste because I generally have 2 or 3 paintings I'm currently working on. I like having a landscape going and figurative abstract at the same time. For me, the abstract causes me to tense up and I get relief by going to the landscape. Generally, I'm painting 40" or 48" by whatever. If I only painted 16x20 or less, I likely wouldn't bother with making my own paint.

    Great video Dustin, thank you for sharing what you've learnt and what you know. So informative. Seems to be a lot of nasty comments on here - unsure why - you didn't have to share what you know with the world (and then upload this for free); so thank you. Was a joy to listen to this as I painted today, gave me a new fresh perspective on a painting that was frustrating me, lol.

    Hi Dustin. I enjoyed this very much both seeing you create a pretty dull beginning phase of your painting AND the explanation you were giving. I often reuse canvas in the same way you did. One thing I was wondering, (maybe I missed this little piece), you are painting with oil, right? How did the charcoal not move around and darken your paint. I've had that problem in the past, where I end up with grays that I didn't want and have to put over another layer to kill them. Will we be able to see the finished work? I'd like to. Anita.

  • @dustinneece
    @dustinneece Жыл бұрын

    Hi Anita, Yes I am using oil paints. I find that vine charcoal (rather than compressed charcoal) is better because it can be more easily brushed away and also it doesn't change the color of the paint when mixed into it.

    Yes, you can use the Zorn palette exactly as a way to get started. I have experimented with different combinations of colors to create limited palettes over the years, so don't feel like you have to be restricted to just the Zorn palette.

    Allback linseed oil is already purified. Look at the video "Generic Linseed Oil Vs. Purified Linseed Oil" from "Earth+Flax Studio". I have made white paint with Allback raw, and the drying time is about 24 hours. That's in thin layers for protecting wood, not as an artists paint, with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (which hastens drying times, 10% by weight). They also sell a boiled version, which should dry faster. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aq11qrKbfLy3aKw.html

  • @dustinneece

    There is a place on the bottom of the Pochade Box to screw in a sturdy tripod. That being said, I paint outdoors with a Beauport Large Format Outdoor Easel and rest the box on that. The Beauport Easel is a less expensive version of this easel: www.takeiteasel.com/. I hope to get this in the future.

    How many “Binders” do you use?...

  • @dustinneece
    @dustinneece2 жыл бұрын

    I only use linseed oil as a binder. The beeswax emulsion could be considered a binder, but its purpose is to act as a stabilizer while the paint is in the tube, and to enrich the quality of the viscosity / consistency of the paint.

  • @dustinneece
    @dustinneece Жыл бұрын

    As far as I understand it (based on talking with someone at Kremer Pigments) Cobald doesn't get lodged in the body like cadmium colors. It has to do with the shape of the molecule. That being said, you can always play it safe by not using Cobalt either. I always recommend using safety practices if you are going to sand your painting in any way.

    I really love your thoughts and videos!! I started to paint outside, because I found that In that way i can look at the subject i really like, for a long time, I can realize details that I wouldn’t if I just took a picture of it… I came to find that painting outside is the real way to get to know your subject, to “communicate” with them. For me it feels like “making an interview” with the natureXD Although I only make watercolor sketches outside, but I feel like every single piece contains the spirit of the place I made it^^
