You fail to mention, Suncoast sound, lost their sponsor Circle K, because Circle K asked them to do a parade representing them and Suncoast sound refused. Stupid move by Suncoast sound they lost their sponsor. Additional information you're unaware of John dowling, Drum Corps Hall of Famer one of the best drum instructors in the world, volunteered to help their drumline, that's how I met John and we became close friends, we started, American Spirit, senior alumni drum and bugle Corps but Suncoast sound members including their staff poo poo dust 100%. Our intention was to help perpetuate the activity of drum and bugle Corps competition in the area the numbers we had at the time or from, New York Skyliners, Riley raiders, Hawthorne Caballeros myself Long Island sunrises, Santa Clara Vanguard, and many other former Junior and senior drum and bugle Corps call my wife at the time help raise money with their bingo nights she was a volunteer. I even approached Suncoast to help them raise money as I did Phantom Regiment and the Boston Crusaders but they turned me down as well my opinion call DCI is the main reason for the demise of what was one of the greatest activities in North america, when kids would Age out from a junior Corps, they never encouraged them to join a senior Corps, while I was in a junior Court the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York, could not wait to join a senior court and at that time senior course were much better than Juniors because their members came in from Junior c o r p s, with plenty of experience drum and bugle Corps were so popular throughout the country and Canada that more people attended competitions than Major League Baseball games. At one time in North America there were approximately 7,000 drum and bugle c o r p s a good majority, we're only for parades, and small exhibitions at major events, the both of them competed in both state and National competitions if they did well in state, they would consider going to Nationals depending on the distance and the cost. Which brings me dues for most junior members was maybe 10 or $20 for the year some paid a dollar for a rehearsal. We had sponsors like the American legion, vfw, cyo, and some corporations like Circle K for Suncoast sound., was started from a marching band that competed in bands of America, Bob Carter was there, management team leader, is background was with marching bands that's why they emulated a marching band John Dowling, help to help instruct the Drumline but they refused he's the one who developed back sticking, again Drum Corps Hall of Famer taught many national championships and yet they turned them down main reason they did not have to play rudiments for the most part in a drumline put the chin strap from the Shaker in the mouth like a high school band would do, and that was pretty much the overall attitude for most of the members they had a marching band background that's all I knew and they wouldn't listen or want to learn anything other than that. DCI has killed the activity mainly because dues are outrageous for the average family or member going on tour pulling all sorts of props it's like a three-ring circus, that's why it cost so much in the millions these days, the drummers are more focused on rim shots and juggling, it's all about visual nothing to do with real rudimental drumming chords that have most money are generally the ones that are at the top, they can buy judges they can do what they're told and they listen like sheep. Very few people attend competitions these days including DCI World Championship maybe 20,000 at best some national championships pulled in 60,000. Local competitions pulled in 6 to 20,000, depending on what drum and bugle Corps, were competing, like, Mission drums in Boston, National dream competition in Jersey City, Grand Prix, Shriners International in Toronto Canada . These competitions draw well over 20,000 plus at each and every one of them. However, I find your analogy of these organizations today very interesting and I will follow you❤❤🎉🎉❤❤😮

The Muchachos Drumline, instructor Dennis DeLuca, who also took the Long Island sunrises they were DCA world champions seven times. I was a member 1964 through 1968 we won American Legion Nationals in 68 led the Macy Day Parade as well. My opinion, DCI is the reason for the demise of what was one of the greatest youth activities in North america. They never encouraged kids to join a senior Corps after aging out, my opinion major mistake it would have perpetuated the activity. Years ago in Metropolitan New York area on the weekend there were two or three competitions to choose to go to within an hour, or two if you did well in your state in competition, then you would consider going to Nationals. Nothing was mandatory to be competitive. The majority of the c o r p s has supported by the community. Because they competed in competitions in the area and they did parades in the area oh well and special events everybody knew who they were and were willing to donate to support them. Today members come from all over the world nobody knows who they are they do not perform locally they do not receive any support❤❤❤😂😂😂

I marched Cadets 88, 89, 90 - so I was right in the middle of some things you are showing. I had a best friend and room mate in Star 1990-93. I remember him practicing Belchezzar's feast on his mellophone. I could watch these kind of shows thousands of times (but I struggle with most modern shows). I won't say much cuz it will hurt feelings. I love traditional uniforms as opposed to body suits. They've gone a little too heavy on dance (some of it is cool though). I love old star and cadets FAST DRILL.

I am a Garfield Cadets alumni. I marched in the golden years. Fortunately I spent time with George Zingali before he went to Star of Indiana. When I see Carolina Crown today I usually say, "the Garfield Cadets" because it seems so much of Cadets staff moved to Star, then to Crown, but I could be wrong about that. Being a Cadet is the most powerful part of my life and always will be. I honestly can't watch a lot of modern drum corps, I will stop there because I will get somebody upset. I still love watching Blue Devils and SCV, and more - mostly fro 1982 to 2011. Thanks for this video, keep it up!

I like the comment about "deal with the gunk" early season. In west Texas, small school band directors had to learn that kids didn't play at all in the summer, so "endure the suck". On average, that lasted about 3 weeks out of the 8 building up to Region contest.

I'm just catching this video know while we're into the 2024 season and I'm nose deep in my feels. As a Jersey kid I'm dying inside without The Cadets. Their '95 and '96 shows got me into marching percussion. I got to audition for the iconic '99 show and man. I never got to march, but man, Tom Aungst and the staff left lasting impressions on me. The Cadets were East Coast drum and bugle and no one will ever do it the same way. Often imitated but never duplicated. Holy be Thy Name.

Since Downside Up, body has gotten much better across the board and would be missed today. Bluecoats 2016 was the sea change of the activity for what members now want.

“This is what the kids want.” Is it, though? Maybe it is in some cases, but it seems to me that most kids just want to do whatever it takes to get in. And guess what: they’re not the ones who get to decide what that is. Most of today’s corps members are amenable to the changes that have taken place, but let’s not pretend that those changes happened because ‘the kids’ demanded them.

Not to knock the comment but I'm a mid 00er here. Body/movement was starting when I joined my school's drumline/band and it grew over the 4 years I marched. I didn't join for the body and movement and did not really care for it but did it because that's what the designer asked of us. We lost a handful of players due to the increase in body but they had poor attitudes too. In the end, great skills to have but sometimes when I watch WGI percussion and I see an entire section dedicated to body and movement while the pit plays I just shake my head. Doubly if they take their drums off and do it. With that said the way performers move nowadays is lightyears beyond what I was asked to do and can do so props to them.

Turns out that I really AM under the weather! Hello COVID my old friend.... Also... to clarify my comments about how long brass lines play... With the show I watched, it was about 7 minutes of brass "sound"... Three and a half minutes was the amount of time the brass played as an entire ensemble. The remaining bit of that 7 minutes was solos, duets or soli sections. Cainan

These things are all decided en-masse in the off season. There's entirely too much amplification and non-marching content. I played electric bass in jazz, upright bass and percussion in concert, and in the drum line in marching. DCI has lost it's connection to it's roots. Can't we just for once stop throwing the kitchen sink at things?

This reminds me of the early 70s when BD just wanted to get in with the big guys and started knocking off Knight Raiders and then Commodores to rub shoulders with SCV the state champions. then DCI started and BD was late to make it but SCV was already a finalist. within 5 years they climbed to win it after the first year of exhibition I got to see as an 8 year old. I went to join in late Oct 70 and nailed the roll but was told to wait by the side. being too young I threw a fit and marched up to Frank the director and told him me and a few others wanted to be in it also. Tuesday before Thanksgiving we picked our corps at holbrook school. we got to march but had no straps and had to carry the sticks. we wore the uniform though. When Jerry Seawrite winked at me in uniform at a parade i knew i was hooked for life.

Just a note on your 27th Lancer history. The corps was a big re-organization when the sponsoring church kicked the I.C. Reveries out at the end of the 1967 season. 27 actually formed from that nucleus in October of '67...the best local corps ever to make it in DCI. The horn in question is a little known instrument invented in the late '30's...the trombonium.

Judges will define the near-term future of the activity this year more than most via what they award as GE. Assuming SCV can kick performance levels up considerably, judges may define that as excellence in GE, and SCV could end up as high as 5th or maybe even 4th. If not, then they're probably destined for 7th. Bloo is in a similar position, anywhere from 1st to 4th.

Nice show. I am enjoying the shows this year. I like most of them. Love Bluecoats. Love Phantom. Love Crown. And I do like Blue Devils as well. I really enjoy Boston, Colts, Blue Stars and Mandarins are fantastic. To defend the Blue Devils a little I will say this: when they were trying more advanced and innovative show concepts like in 2008 (for that time), 2010, 2012, 2013, it seemed they got a lot of negative comments and the crowds seemed to give them golf claps. So I think they went back to the drawing board and found success with 2014 and even more so with 2015 (from an audience appreciation standpoint). From 2015 on they have been quite enjoyable and in the case of their 2017 and 2019 shows were BIG fan favorites. I also believe they are a corps that believes you don't need to reinvent the wheel every year. They almost always retain certain visual and musical ideas from year to year, only doing so within a new framework. I actually don't mind that. I think the reason it becomes more of a talking point with many on DCP, KZread and elsewhere is because they win so often. If they were not winning so much most people would likely enjoy them and point to their unique style as a nice formula the same way many fans want to see Phantom do a wedge or leg kick or big symphonic music, etc. But because BD wins so much the conversation eludes to their formula as a bad thing...that they are working the judging sheets just for sheer score. Now in fairness, when you consider the talent BD has, it would be nice to see them take more risks and change the styles up a bit more, but I think they have been enjoying the fact that fans have really gravitated to their shows since 2015. And I would too if I were them. I do think Bluecoats have a shot at the title this year, but BD is really really good in all captions. It will be close. I love Carolina's music and I feel they can be top 3 or 4. I am not sure they have the legs in that show to be top 2 but I would love to see it. Same is true with Boston. I love that show. As of now they have not really tied in the GLITCH theme during the course of the show other than a little at the intro. Maybe this can help them as they layer and add during the season. I like SCV a lot and the new uniforms do not bother me. The show music is good but I am not sure if the concept is being projected well and GE may be tough to come by for them. In contrast Phantom has a killer show with great GE potential. Mandarins are in a similar boat to Phantom. Great show and great potential. I look forward to seeing if Cavaliers can clean and tweak this show into something better. This is the 3rd year in a row where I feel their design team has not had a coherent show ready for the kids. I am rooting for them. Still so many corps to see but I am looking forward to a competitive and fun season.

Heavy edits Love classic uniforms but they are never coming back folks. You can't stick kids in wool/old style uniforms. There are benefits to the costumes that uniforms couldn't do. Crisp visual lines on the body, design freedom, performer comfort. Lots of "bad" looks this year. BD upclose those color pieces on the front look poorly made. Blue Stars looks flat/screen printed and just cheap. Love Colts and Bluecoats. Great choices there. Cavaliers are just terrible to look at and the show man, just disappointing. I don't feel it at all. There are a few "BOA" style shows which I don't like seeing. Blue Stars - Boston if they do not design with quality will end up a glorified BOA show. I was happy to see SCV coming out and getting it. I was afraid the design was going to be a bad product. Love what the Bluecoats are doing. BD, they're good. They are really good but I think BC will beat that.

Does it seem silly to us when it was never a thing to do? Yeah but like any sport, there's always uniform shoots showcasing the "new" look. I don't understand how a new look every year is economically feasible unless the material is just that cheap since we're not working with wool/heavy hitter stuff that is supposed to last more than one season.

Let me preface this by saying, I will never, ever disparage the time and the effort that these young people put out to participate in this activity. They should all be recognized and applauded. It doesn’t matter if you’re marching in a top 10 corps or you are marching in the last place corps. That being said after watching drum Corps for the past 40 years, it’s almost unrecognizable and not in a good way. We have costumes now rather than uniforms. The corps have lost their sense of identity. Show design has evolved to the point where I feel like I’m watching WGI shows outside. Yes the programs are technically proficient and set new standards. All I know is when I go to a show now it’s rare that I get goosebumps and I used to get them all the time.
