congrad the raccoons found your tent in the night. do you know the name of the campground that you stayed in ?? all of them have huge overgrown raccoons in them. they are famous for opening coolers and going into your car if you leave the windows down and they love digging for food in your car at night.

About half a mile further up from McGill is Chula Vista Campground, also at 8,300’ elevation. From the Mt Pinos ranger station parking lot it’s a very short 2 minute walk to the campground. Well maintained, with picnic tables, fire pits, and pit toilets, this is a first come first served campground. The best part is this campground is FREE!

Nice looking boots! They look good on you, too. Happy Birthday, Brother! Btw, I bought a pair of Timberland boots in the late '70s before they became so popular. People would stop me on the street and ask about them because they wanted a pair. Those boots lasted me for about 30 years, but as I got older they began to seem too tight so I got rid of them. But they were still functional. Great product!

I live in Morro Bay, so I'm glad you got to experience our wonderful little town. I am not sure what animal was making noise, but, once you said "rodent" it made me think it might be ground squirrels. We have LOTS. We also have deer, turkeys, quail, etc. Nothing much to worry about, except bears. But, the ground squirrels are a real possibility as they will dart into their holes, as soon as they see you, so that might be why you could not see them. And, because you were not bothered after you moved your tent, you may have originally put your tent on their hole. And, they are active at night. Who knows? But, that is my guess.

  • @Juan-Blasquez

We looooved Morro Bay and want to go visit again. We actually were saying that we could see ourselves living there, maybe some day! I think you are right, it was very likely ground squirrels, we've never heard anything like that before, we were so weirded out honestly. Thanks for the comment!

I live in the area and know Cerro Alto well as well as Montana de Oro. $10 says it was a raccoon. They tend to cruise the campsites at nite and even attempt entry into tents if the smell cookies and good stuff. That, or possibly a Wood Rat. The Wood Rats are very large by rat standards and form large mounding nests of wood and twig debris up inside the brush. The neat looks like a person dumped an organized pile of debris within the confines of a large shrub or small tree. They live inside that debris pile. Try Montana de Oro State Park sometime. Less primitive campgrounds and more miles of single-track hiking, mountain biking trail than you could take in with a few days.
