iTechStorm

All things computer, server, client, software, hardware, networking and technology related. I will post primarily how-to videos along with a few other surprises. A casual stroll down the avenue of Storage Area Networking (SAN/NAS), DIY home comm closets, streaming broadcast, performance tuning, and a random tip snack. Generally speaking all things Information Technology related are game on this channel. I'm always willing to take suggestions or requests if you have a burning question on topic. Of course I make no guarantees, but you never know when things might get crazy.

My question would be is it really worth it to build your own compare to an already built switch? I'm looking at it between the price point of a homelab and a datacenter. it's awesome to build your own network switch and all but not sure other then a costly of cards as well as motherboard with a lot of lanes on it.

You could do this with for example 25 or even 100 Gbe cards ?

If I wanted to connect 3 PC’s would using a dual port card in each of them and then connecting each pc to the other two work? Alternatively - my main work station is the only one which actually needs to talk to both other PC’s So could I connect my main workstation to my render server AND my storage server using a dual port card?

More than 7 years later, 10GBit has hardly caught on in the home. Too expensive, too much energy consumption and too short cable routes. In contrast, 2.5 GB on the old CAT6 cables is slowly catching on

It’s disappointing to me that more progress has not been made with 10Gb options. As the NBASE-T/MGBASE-T standards improve I think we will get to 10Gb once 2.5/5Gb becomes more standard.

Dude, this is like a $1000 system. Do you have something that might be just a bit cheaper like using some stuff around the house or left over parts, how about using an old i3 4150 or something like that? Like if I had the money to buy this I wouldn't be looking to build one bro.

Hi there. great video! Only issue i have is im trying to do this on a desktop based i5 PC. The only option in the bios that is remotely similar to those advanced options you specified is enabling Virtualization technology. Are those options really necessary? You sounded full of conviction so im assuming they are important... but how important is my question? lol.

I've ordered a couple of PCIe X4 Mellanox ConnectX-3 EN PCIe 10GbE MCX311A-XCAT CX311A Controller cards have i made a mistake not getting PCIe x8 cards? or is x4 fast enough for single port cards in a PCIe Gen 2 x4 slot? I think by your diagram it should be ok at 16Gb/s Bandwidth? Thanks!

Was this viable back in 2016? 10Gb switches are getting cheaper and cheaper year by year, so nowadays this only gives you customization benefits, the cost and power requirements are pretty high

Although not as cool or flexible, you could also create a 10g peer to peer network if all of the client machines had dual-port nics with both ports bridged on each nic. Then you would just daisy chain them, like an old 10base2 network. Actually the two end computers would only need 1-port nics. You'd also need to set up routes on each machine for the 10g network. Now that I think about it, this method is stupid. Forget everything I said.

Great video! Thanks! Wondering why you didn’t virtualize the Vyos install via hypervisor. This way your system is not just dedicated for 10g switching but can be used for other purposes. Finally, your rational for doing a custom 10g switch was to save money on enterprise 10g switch but then you end up dedicating your whole system (super micro mb, 4x10g nics etc) for switching. May be I missed something or just misunderstood your part 3 video. Regardless, the idea & the presentation is great & useful. Thanks again.
