Loneliest man in the world! Wow, the rejection of Susskind...bitch slap in maths!
It's amazing how far back the galaxy redshift record has been pushed since the late time she updated the presentation before this was posted. JADES-GS-z14-0 is z=14.32 vs. the earliest galaxy quoted here at z=8.68.
The pursuiet of physics, with faith!
Perhaps someone can tell us what the reasearch on string theory has produced in practicle terms for humanty in 40 years?
is ed witten the smartest man alive

bro a vampire
I love the way scientists plod along…even when they hit a wall, there is an excitement for breaking through.
I like seeing grown men in tiny chairs . They appear as giants….which they are
My God, is there at any point any way to relate any of this to the reality we grapple with every day. Did nature really contrive its guts to need such far out beyond the scope of comprehension divination … An ape came along and pulled on a thread/string and all was unravelled/revealed… but nothing that can be tested .. so we are told .. nothing that unifies anything. Hyper rarified mathematics looking for some physical application.
Nature isn’t bound by any obligation to be intuitively understandable to us. Our brains didn’t evolve to comprehend the Universe, it evolved to pass on our genes. Even so, QFT has been validated experimentally since the 1960s. It is observed experimentally, in the real world, every time a particle accelerator is running (and working correctly).
I wish I was as clever as I think I am
7:04 In spite of his nobel medaille (🏅) for mathematics and his Fields price for his lifetime achievements in fisiks or something, he couldn't add two and 2!
first inaudible = "find their things"
Hasn't this guy been credited for the 70 years of stagnation in physics starting in the Chapel Hill days?
Edward Witten is obviously a very high intelligence person. But I don't think he "welcomes" the virtual worship coming from either existing scientists or the public. We cannot automatically assume he is correct about everything even if he has an IQ of 285. Let's appreciate his high IQ. Let's stop the worship. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
He predicted several things ... in the next 10 years.has been over 30 years, now. I dont really know what happened with those predictions
Look up kapos during the Holocaust... Sadly witton is one of them
I was neighbors with Mr Dirac, and I had no idea who he was until much later. Lol, he was just a normal elderly man living a very quiet life.
When having BS & Master degree in Physics and hearing Witten speak everything sounds like a fairytale story.
So this guy was debunked by some supporting actor of iron man. Wild times
Jews...
First prove the existence of the atom
Thanks sir, I am also a mathematician. ❤❤
M theory lol
M theory lol
It's a bit ironic how we've arrived at a metaphorical black hole when it comes to the major breakthroughs in theoretical physics. Forty years later and we're still grappling with some of the same fundamental questions these men are exploring, and every path we've tried going down (string theory, supersymmetry, quantum gravity, etc.) has come up short so far. Seems like we're gonna need another Einstein to figure what we haven't yet.
they say einstein if not figured out someonelse did in 3 to 4 years mean he was also ordinary genius.....
The first reality IS. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST EVERYTHING AFTER THAT IS ELEMENTARY,
Please leave your Adult Santa in your pocket. We don't need it around here. It's ugly like hell.
Do you know what happens if a physics student asks his professor: "What would happen if we rotated the Michelson-Morley interferometer vertically?" The professor's answer usually is: "If you keep asking this kind of question, I'm going to ask you to leave the classroom or I'll fail you in the course".
Smartest person in my generation, perhaps? Brilliant…. Absolutely brilliant. Still I’m sticking with my own dumb idea that there is a God and he cares for me. You do you.
So now that you have told us that you are intellectually lazy, are we supposed to like you better? How is that supposed to work? ;-)
Great mathematician with no knowledge of the real World. Epitaph should read "Single handily stifled Physics in the 21st century."
Witten has an extremely keen physical intuition. He didn't stifle anything. What stops us from making the next step in theory is the absence of physical evidence. There is simply not a single observation that contradicts quantum field theory.
I too think Young Professor Witten's knowledge and sense of history of Physics and math (etc.) is, among other things, what makes him so charming and likeable... plus his humility, humor, and genuine love of discovery! ❤️😊
I don't think people grasp how smart Witten is. This dude is one of the smartest people EVER. The ONLY PHYSICIST to ever win a Fields Medal. And he's STILL sharp as a whistle all these years later. He's like some freakish combination of Einstein, Archimedes, Maxwell, Dirac and Poincare. His IQ would break the IQ test.
From all accounts, for all of his AMAZING genius, he's widely considered a GREAT person too. One of the smartest humans to ever live.
You are brilliant Witten, but you are wrong. strings are a dead end.
I don't think that's true. The trouble with string theory is that it is most likely just a mesoscopic theory. It works in the strong gravity regime below the event horizon and the singularity plane. It is highly unlikely that it works on the plane itself... but that is not even a testable hypothesis.
I understood only the parts that were in English such as “the, and, so, we, boundary” etc.
As mathematics student I just listen to their conversation
Good man
Kind of a nonsense conversation no offense to the distiniguished professors.
Ed Witten is probably on same level as Newton and Einstein
Just forcing the observable data
Enjoyable
This whole conversation is delightful !
That was great to hear how the different papers had influenced his thinking on the subject. This interview really encapsulates a particular view of the history of these things.
Voice is too low. Can't hear much
I had the same conversation with my friends in the pub the other day. People seems to get very passionate about it.
Humm...I don't want to be a fly on your wall.
Hats off to the interviewer 😮😮😮
...физики уничтожат человечество.
Very chill dudes
How come Ed never talks to Brian green on youtube ?
Why would he? Brian Greene is a small fish. Witten is the largest shark in the pond of physics.
@@schmetterling4477 He actually did a talk with him i found
the sanskrit alphabet shirt!
