Quick question if you don't mind me asking, I think this is the plant that I have in my backyard... I moved into my house two years ago and there was this one plant that looks like this one. Well this summer it's growing what looks like a 20 ft flower in the middle of it??? I was just wondering if these types of plants do this??? It's kinda of scary to look at and I tell my friends that the aliens have arrived ;)

Thank you for sharing this. I have tried many times to grow agave americana from seed, and I haven't yet had success. At the end you mention pups popping up from seed. Do you think those pups sprouted from seed simply scattered in the yard as opposed to pups that may have been emerging before the mother plant bloomed? Thanks again!

Amazing ! I live in Phoenix and just this year decided to start harvesting the dead and dried or the large 20 foot live ones that have fallen over during the monsoons. You mentioned that yours was dried before Jaun took it down. One thing that people do with the dried stalks is make Didgerido's. Anyone that has one that's 5 ft or larger seek out a local artist. Once dried they can be made into yard art or instruments. Caution. When wet; Exposure to Oxalic Acid can cause headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, convulsions, coma, and even death. Prolonged or repeated contact can cause a skin rash, pain, redness, blisters, and slow healing ulcers. I learned this a few weeks ago. I felt like my arms and legs were on fire! However; the inner part of the stalk is very sweet. Hence the sugars and flavor when roasted and fermented make Agave Tequilla

I am located in Lake Charles, LA almost to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in southern Louisiana. In our yard we've had these Agave Americana grow to enormous proportions like yours here. After they've gotten this big, they'll generally put out a large stalk with flowers about 15' tall! That's also usually their "swan song", as they will wither and die. But, they'll generate at least 3 or 4 "pups" or offsets to leave as a legacy!

  • @Djevil710

I’m trying to grow agave Americana from seed. How long did you wait until you saw the flowers? Side note: did you watch these from pup stage or were they already established? From my research agave Americana only blooms once in the plants life cycle and then dies. The blooms can take anywhere from 15-50 years to occur.
