Using Linux for home studio recording and especially guitar DSP, and getting pretty darn impressive results, too! Posting maybe once or twice a month what I've learned or recorded.

Mostly aiming to modern metal sounding mixes and tones.

    Hey, great tutorial! I have a technical question: what are your thoughts on running Carla on a Raspberry Pi 5 if I need 3 different instances of NAM (with only one requiring an IR), plus a TubeScreamer LV2 plugin (assuming it even exists, lol)? Considering that the latest Pi 5, with a quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU clocked at 2.4 GHz, is about 2-3x more performant than the Pi 4, do you think it would handle this setup well?

    Last I knew, Ardour used an antiquated library for their widgets. GTK. Not GTK plus but, old-fashioned GTK. That makes them a Knogo for me because I use software that relies on at-spi which is the accessibility framework on Linux. Literally drove me away from the operating system. These days, I use reaper. Works good on windows, if you can believe it.

    I think there are already a lot of IR videos out there and the only "Linux specific" thing you need to know, is the plugins to use to load them 🙂 But in a nutshell: Amp signal goes to cabinet and microphone in front of the cabinet records the sound that comes out. Now remove the amp and instead send a special signal to the cabinet while still recording the sound that comes out with the microphone. You'll get a recording (.wav file) which is the impulse response representing that specific cabinet, microphone, and microphone placement you had, in the room you were in. The recording (.wav file) can now be applied after any amp using impulse response loader (plugin) after the amp signal. This way you can just load whatever amp capture (e.g. NAM) and IR capture someone has made (and shared or sold to you), to reproduce different physical gear setups with professional accuracy.

    Sounds like your system configuration is somehow messed up. You might want to check if you should be using PipeWire instead of PulseAudio/Jack. In Ardour you should always use ALSA unless you really need low-latency connecticity between Ardour and other applications. Check also that you have low-latency kernel, and that realtime permissions are enabled for Jack if you use PA/Jack configuration.

    Thanks for your videos,I am a fellow Linux+Ardour user. I am curious, why you use Hydrogen and then transfer the midi+mix to Ardour? Wouldn't it be better to write the drum part directly in Ardour using DrumGizmo (in this way you have more direct control on the final drum mix)?

  • @SudoMetalStudio
    @SudoMetalStudioАй бұрын

    I simply like Hydrogen better for drum pattern creation than Ardour. It's especially fast when riffing with guitar and quickly drafting some beats to complement the riff. I don't always use it like that as I tend to switch between doing patterns and playing live using e-drums, but I just want to stay in one context and mix even when swapping my production methods. When doing Hydrogen patterns, I export them as Midi to Ardour. When I play e-drums, I record that directly to Ardour as midi. In both cases I still route the Midi from Ardour to Hydrogen and back to Ardour as audio, so I get the same samples and mix from kit I have loaded in Hydrogen. So, I use its mixer to do the mixing of drums against everything else in Ardour. And when I'm ready to export my song, I just need to remember to record the drums as audio first. Until that point I still have full control on everything. Btw, Hydrogen could also fan out all the samples to separate outputs tracks like DrumGizmo does, but I just don't need that level of detail in my drum mixes (yet). Also with DrumGizmo sets you need to control the bleeding sounds etc exactly like when recording real drums and I'm just not that good. Having "pure" sounds as samples is just easier :) DrumGizmo is still the one recommended by pros to my knowledge.

  • @davebuz4197
    @davebuz4197Ай бұрын

    @@SudoMetalStudio Thanks, I am gonna try your production method for drums...definitely Hydrogen looks better for pattern creation (for me doing it in Ardour Midi edit is a chore) and I like the idea to have a less cluttered DAW because all the drums are dealt with in another application. By the way, I play guitar and I am involved in a rock/metal project, so your channel is a godsend.

    I'm trying to figure out what's stupid! I've got an ancient Radium Musicman keyboard that has some knobs and sliders on board (I wonder if Bach ever used it). Oddly enough, all but one of the knobs are useable -- you touch the knob and the potentiometer bounces around like a Jack Russell Terrier on speed. This vid makes me wonder what a bucket-load of pots from a guitar supply depot could do in the right hands.

  • @SudoMetalStudio
    @SudoMetalStudioАй бұрын

    DIY midi devices is not really a new thing at all. In this one it's the noise of the 3D printed "fader" that's mostly stupid in my opinion, and also the fact that I could have ordered a slider too when I ordered the Arduino 😅 But I also figured the reason why good DAW controllers are so frickin' expensive: it's the motorized faders that cost like hell! Around 20-50 EUR/USD even from China per piece!

  • @jamesgardner2101
    @jamesgardner2101Ай бұрын

    I'm pretty sure my old Behringer was noisier! I have an old Yamaha mixer that uses rotary pots for the faders, but they are mounted on a rack and pinion gear setup, where the pot follows the fader handle. That approach should also work, and would probably be a bit smoother.

I've been lucky enough to find really good paid and free plugins while using windows that have no issue with the fact I now use MX Linux. Audio Assault has compressed archives with all the necessary files. Same goes for NaLexSoft plugins. A few others like Neurontube just have .Deb archives. The rest are either available in the KX Studio repositories, or like NAM, need to be compiled. Nice work, and I'm glad that github NAM model repository I put together is still getting some use! Speaking of NAM models, having hung around the discord and NAM facebook whilst tonehunt was being developed, I can assure you there's nothing nefarious going on with user accounts / user signon. It helps the end user, because then you're able to do things like follow certain capture creators and so on, and it helps the admins because they have to make sure people aren't uploading captures that would violate TOS of other companies (eg captures of amp sims like Neural DSP, or captures from modellers like Quad Cortex or Kemper). Up until relatively recently, the tonehunt source code itself was open source.
