Did they ever use their old siren system for tornado warnings in the 80’s and 90’s, until they installed their current system?

Thanks! As much as I would try and do something like that, there really isn't too much to cover. Just the alternate wail usage and a few instances of malfunctioning sirens. I might do it though, I'll think about it
@@thespiritstingray9359 did you know in 2008 they used alternate wail first activation but than normal wail 2nd I find that weird plus I feel like they added a custom fast wail tone at wrigley field because that modulator is located at wrigley a popular landmark in chicago and they wanted that modulator to have a innovation purpose since it's right by that famous landmark. That's my theory tho.

These still do Alternate Wail? I thought they stopped using it. Or are you just saying that these *used* to do Alternate Wail?

I forgot to mention one other city used to use Alt wail for weather emergencies, and that was Livonia Michigan, which had an eow 612 until 2008
If you are still here by next first Tuesday you should get the lake shore DSA or the Clock Tower DSA. I also heard in one of the videos a DUAL-TONE MOD at the water treatment plant near navy pier. Also fun little fact about the Modulators & DSA's -- They're not actually sirens. They're original purpose was to be PA speakers placed in averagely populated areas. Hence there being a 2001-SRN 1.5 blocks away from the 3012. This also means that the 2001's are the only real sirens in the city, but since they installed the Mod's and DSA's they just decided to use them as sirens since they never used them for their intended purpose.
I'm pretty sure they are also meant to serve as sirens. I don't see any other reason why they would need to make siren sounds if they were only for PA use, they would only need an attention chime.
@@J19_vlogger74 The SiraTone C/B was meant for the EOWS lineup -- the EOWS lineup were actual sirens made to sound like thunderbolts but they were also capable of doing voice and customized tones as well. The Modulator Controller (MC) was made for, of course the modulator -- a "better" version of the SiraTone controller. YES, the MC's Chicago bought are used as sirens today and were always able to be used as sirens - BUT their original intended purpose was to be used as PA Speakers since they were capable of doing VOICE. That's why you see more of them on the areas closest to the near sides of the city all the way to downtown. And that's why there is a 3012 just 1.5 blocks away from an SRN which is a mechanical siren. If you were to manage a city's siren placement would you put a 2001 just 1 block away from an electric siren when the electric siren can echo off of the buildings near it? That would make no sense unless they had a different purpose for it. The reason they use them as sirens today is because they work and they have decent coverage already. The 3012 isn't as loud as the 6024 obviously but that one also has decent coverage.
@@v10-ACR-E good point. I guess there's no reason why they wouldn't use them for sirens too, if they're already able to work as a siren and they could improve coverage.
@@J19_vlogger74 They only improve coverage where they were meant to be used, Chicago has a lot they need to do to get coverage across the city anyways. Some areas have perfect coverage, some places dont have any coverage at all. As seen in the video below, you can barely hear the sirens. I find it ironic how I set the St. Paul, NE Thunderbolt 1003 off in hi-lo that day and back in my hometown there was a TORNADO WARNING past 9pm.
This was a crazy night. My town had a tornado but minor damage. Our T-128 could use new battery’s as when the power went out it got pretty low pitched

This is super creepy. Must have been a pretty uneasy night for people who were there in 1990.
@@Snowcube none of the sirens heard in this video were there in 1990. Plainfield installed their current system after the tornado.

It was done by a bunch of amateurs, a controlled lowering would have been easily achieved with a winch and some common sense.
@johnnz4375 not necessarily. A winch would have done little to help with the removal. Keep in mind that this thing was mounted deep in a forest, so access to it was limited already. Doesn't matter anyways since they fully restored it and now it runs like new.

Fun fact : The modulator at wrigley field has a customized fast wail tone added to it, and the modulator doesnt perform a windup when it plays the custom fast wail, it just starts playing fast wail without a windup and the fast wail on that modulator also doesnt have a winddown either.

@@thespiritstingray9359 I can't say PLENTY. There's more SiraTone (C/B) stuff online than the MC, though the MC is newer - Chicago was the main place to have MC's all over, everywhere else was either upgraded to MC, kept the SiraTone, or waited for the MCP or UV.
