This channel is directed to non-technical people (like myself) who are interested in learning more about Ham Radio. I cover a step by step process of learning the basics of Ham Radio. I have purposely kept it simple with tons of graphics and videos for a faster learning curve. This is NOT teaching you what you need to pass the test BUT rather how Ham Radio works and operates. This is the stuff you need to know in order to USE Ham Radio and understand the basics to get up and running.
I am taking what I have recently gone through and making sure others don't have to walk on the path I did. If I only had this when I started my journey, it would have been much easier to learn and understand. I hope this helps you get up and running much faster and less confusing IF you get the big picture first and know the terminology, workflow and how Ham Radio operates in the real world today.

Genius. 🎉
Thanks for all your efforts and instruction. Not sure if I want to do it as I see many "trip wires" that can/will give you nightmares. Maybe another year once all that config stuff is normalized. Thanks again for all your efforts. Will look at VarAC next.
Great video! Praying for you 🙏❤
I have no exposure and dyslexic sometimes I really wanna learn
Does a dmr still work if there is a complete power outage in the area?
Most Repeaters have temporary battery backup. How long will they stay up? Depends on what they are connected to. Some will only last 24 hours before someone has to haul a generator and fuel to keep it working. Others may be connected to tower (like Verizon or on a building) that has diesel generators. They will run longer. Most will cut back their transmitter / server rack repeater power to run longer so they will reduce the wattage output. I hope this helps!
@@hamradiomadesimple that helps. Thank you for your informative videos. You do a great job. You’ve help bring light to some questions i was confused about. Keep up the great info and videos.
Thank you so much for your detailed information presented here. Got Fldigi up and running with my FT-710 thanks to you. Also learned so much from you explanations about its controls and functions.
Glad it helped
Thank you very much for the video.
Glad it was helpful.
Thank you very much for the video. Great overview.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very smart steps you mention. Writing down stuff on scratch paper love that!
Yes! Thank you!
Having audiio examples of these would be helpful, if youre considering an update.
That would be a big project put will put it on my list. I will want to include both audio and visual - see the signals and break them out. Thanks for suggesting.
New HAM here, thank you for this video. Shared with my son who is also a new HAM.
That is awesome! Nice to have someone you know to connect with.
Great video as always MJ 👍
Thanks for the encouragement!!
Hey MJ! Great JS8Call Tips & Tricks video! Hope you are doing well! 73, Patrick KF4LMX
Hey, thanks and good to see your name pop up my friend. It always makes me smile 😁
Good video! I didn’t know about click the CALLSIGN as a shortcut, also REPLY as another PULL field
Spoke too soon on Reply Pull. Still flushing that out yet. Also, digging into the JS8 macros to see how they work. Want to see if are worth the effort.
Great information, thanks for making this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much, so good to see you back on. Hopefully, you can find some good medicine. 73 Randall N5RKS
I hope so too!
I'm going to try experimenting with saving relay routing in saved messages for stations that I would frequently relay to.
It auto-sends as soon as I select it, but with as slow as this mode is I think I will have time to start typing my message
Great idea AND try "Query Callsign - [callsign?]" in the directed to button field. If you want to relay a message, one way to see if that call station can reach you intended destination. Also, try "Hearing [callsign hearing?]" to find what stations you think may be a good relay. They will send you the last 4 stations they have picked up.
Thanks for some of the new information. Hope you are doing well-- Bob WB6TIS
Bob, I am trying to get as many as I can. I can see a decline in my memory happening faster. I will try and finish up the remote desktop series this week if possible. Not looking good my friend.
@@hamradiomadesimple MJ, so sorry but keep it positive as positive can be. Thanks for the good work. 73 Bob WB6TIS
Thank you for the tips and tricks! - Drew
I bet you knew most of these anyway Drew!!
This is very good information. I really enjoy the how to videos. Thank you for your time!
Glad you like them! As I learn stuff I do a video to help others figure this stuff out faster.
I am just getting everything together to setup 2 JS8Call stations- tested etc. PERFECT TIMING with this!!
Great and best HF Digital App out today. Have fun.
How soon before a call sign is expired can you put in the request? It looks like some people submit their request a few days before the call sign expire date. Excellent video though!!
There are sites that show when the date of the callsign expires. They will submit the paper work ahead of the date and try and time it right that when they actually process it, the callsign will just become available. It seems like a lottery to me on all this.
Like you , I realize dependency on the grid for communications untenable . I really appreciate your introduction to this new field of knowledge for me. I believe going digital will ensure if there ever is a cataclysmic world event that we will be thrown into the Stone Age. Communication will be key to preventing the complete loss of knowledge and better our chances to rebuild Thank you
I am glad there are others (like you) that seem to get this concept. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Great setup. I have been watching a lot of your videos after stumbling on your channel a few weeks ago. I truly appreciate all the work you've put into the channel
Awesome, thank you! I learn something and then I share it. This way the learning curve is shorter for everyone else. Thanks for your encouragement my friend!!
Prayers sent!
AND RECEIVED!!! Thank you.
OK, you did mention some of the point I was querying! In the UK it's Power rather than bands your restricted on! This is edited. 73s M7FDJ
I just heard about this a week ago. New rules came out on power restrictions in the UK. The most important area is not power but a great antenna at the right height. It is the equalizer 😊
The Emcomm II is not an EFHW! It's basically and end fed random wire. The Emcomm 2 uses a lossy 5:1 unun, the end fed half wave (EFHW) uses a 49:1 transformer that is fairly efficient, not the lossy 5:1 unit.
Technically you are correct. However, by the manufacturer and others, they are being classified as such. To reduce confusion, I called it what they called it. Thanks for the post.
@@hamradiomadesimple I beg to differ, their website evens states it's a 60' wire fed with a 5:1 transformer and says nothing about an EFHW! I see this mistake all the time of people calling any end fed wire an end fed half wave and we need to make sure we are using the correct terminology so that folks get educated on what they are buying and using and the differences between them. Feed a wire from the end doesn't make it an EFHW, a half wave is a wire that "IS" a half wave length long for the band of interest. An EFHW that covers 80 thru 10 meters would be about 134 feet long for 80 meters, not 60 feet long!
"It can even make your dinner for you" HA 😂 sign me up
Thanks for making me smile today!!
"Prepper" Ugh. Blocking this channel from showing up from now on.
Oh well, go ahead and wish you the best in your life despite your anger toward me. May you find joy and peace down the road.
@@hamradiomadesimple Thanks for your concern !
I just found your channel while looking for videos on the basics. Praying for your recovery brother.
I appreciate that for my health issues continue to mount.
Never used a sloper before. With the Chameleon II, is it correct that I can place the transformer say 30 feet up on my house and run the wire to a point on a wooden fence 3 foot of the ground? I mean to ask I guess, it doesnt matter which end of the slope the transformer is on??? I will run a 30-40 foot counterpoise as well. Thanks.
Yes, but they recommend the other way. Some EFHW manufactures recommend your proposed setup. I am not sure PRACTICALLY how much it really matters. Height and angle matter more than what end. Please get back to me and let me know how it is working and IF you notice it is more directional in nature.
Very helpful, thank you so much.
Glad it is of value to you!
Welcome back..missed you...I've been praying for you,!
Thanks for the prayers. Still battling health issues but decided to push forward knowing it will take much more time to produce these videos.
Nice job sir, ty.
Thank you for taking the time to post this!
I am very pleased to see a new video from you. Like others, I have learnt much from your videos. I’m happy your health issues are under control😊.
Thanks but not sure they are under control just yet LOL.....The list keeps growing and they can't find out what exactly is going on. Oh well, I am functional to a certain degree. Learning to be an overcomer.
So sorry to hear about your health struggles. I appreciate the work you do for us with your training videos. Best to you. Bob WB6TIS
Thanks, Bob for your concern of my health. Blessings to you my friend.
I just picked up your station you were talking about the first repeater in Wake Forest on my baefang in Jacksonville
AMAZING. I wish I was on then.
You're the guy with the mega Tower 🗼! You did a video with your son. I just got my first ham radio I got two of them. A guy who owns the radio shop offered me to work there as a computer technician as his partner. I live in North Carolina also, I just moved here
I'm in Jacksonville
No mega tower here LOL!! Wire antennas deployed in a stealth format. Check out this video on doing 2M Digital comms with FSQ. Drew is now piloting JS8 since it works better with weaker signals. Maybe we can try this sometime but 2M is "line of sight" so I don't expect much. I have 50W radio and a good outside antenna.
New ham here. One of my next purchases will be a digirig. I'm a little bit North of you in NC so very interested to get WinLink setup on VHF and my oddity radio. Thanks to your videos I'm going to look into FSQ on 6m if I can get ahold of a 6m SSB that won't break the bank. Thank you for putting information out that works under the Tech privileges.
Email me at [email protected] We can try connecting on 6M when you are up and running.
Im not getting licensed but Im gonna operate one anyway! 😁
You can listen all you want without any issue. Good way to practice hitting different repeaters and such.
Thanks for the information and great explanation. I’m interested in a receiver only. At the beginning you mentioned the eton but it’s sold out everywhere. Is there another option that you would recommend ?
Check this link out. Let me know what you pick. www.savenetradio.org/best-shortwave-radios/
@@hamradiomadesimple will these radios pickup the ham radio bands? The specs are only up to 108 mhz
I am learning so much from your Videos , Many Thanks

Great information and looking forward to future videos. Thank you for taking the time to produce these!
Thanks for taking the time to let me know.
pskreporter shows you 5 miles away on 40m. Hello neighbor! 🙂
Hello and look forward seeing you. I switched to my NVIS Antenna on 40M and lets see if we can connect.
Good to see you’re back
