Ashley, I and my Wife, love your music. We like the Gritty ones just as much as the we love those like the Cornbread Cake. Keep the Country Music coming. As long as artist like you, Mo Pittney and a few others are performing and writing Country will live. P.S. The People that made that song possible would LOVE IT. It tells their story, what a tribute.

Indeed. Sometimes there's a tendency to over-produce folky songs and make them too slick. Of course, since this is by one of America's best composers, it's not really folk music, but I know what you mean. At any rate, this version has just the right tone and setting.

At the risk of outing myself as a musical philistine, I admit that I had never heard this song until two days ago. I'm working on a creative project & went looking for the appropriate song ... and discovered this one, an oldie but goodie from Stephen Foster. The hymn-like chords of the chorus were what really hooked me on this song. Okay, that and the brilliant lyrics. So I have spent several hours over the last two days watching literally dozens upon dozens of covers of the song on KZread. Two things in particular have struck me: 1 - The variety of performances. A lot of people do this song as a ballad. A not insignificant number interpret it as a rather brisk 90bpm song. It has been done as folk, R&B, country, choral a capella, and vocal backed by a small string ensemble. Bob Dylan covered it as only Bob Dylan can ... you know, with a Bob Dylan vocal that no one else could replicate. A bunch of people loved this song so much they performed it as one of their quarantunes. Then there are the videos by Japanese performers who sing the lyrics partly in Japanese. Crazy. Crazy good. It's amazing how universal this song is with regard to how many people feel it speaks to them. 2. There doesn't seem to be any one approach to performing this song that dominates how it "should" be done. Vastly different interpretations have yielded a number of real gems. I suppose that is a testament to Foster's songwriting. It can be stretched in so many different directions without damage. All this is my very lengthy wind-up to the pitch: I have to say, out of the dozens and dozens and dozens of different covers I have watched, this one ranks in the top 10% with me. Maybe even the top 5%. Part of the reason is because I was curious how someone would cover the song with just a guitar and a solo vocal .... and you, Mr. Newton, have shown us exactly that ... a simplicity of performance designed to make the song shine. The second main reason I like this performance so much is because you convinced me that you know -- as in, really, REALLY know -- what the lyrics are about. With a lot of other singers, these lyrics are lyrics. With you, these lyrics are LIFE. You've lived them, absorbed them, and your song is a kind of testimonial about them. Bravo. Thank you, Mr. Newton, for sharing a gifted interpretation. I agree with turtleface about your lovely singing voice. I thought you started off a little nervous, but then you got into the zone & delivered some steady & outstanding singing.
