Great video in the old Phoebus A from a guy who used to fly the old Std Libelle. I bet we can out thermal today's ships costing 20 times as much, ha. I don't think about Washington State having desert-like terrain, but the eastern section looks like a great area for lift. In my much younger days, I would make an annual sojourn with a couple of other pilots out to Marfa, TX, where I did a couple of tasks as a group, but it definitely adds anxiety.

@johnfoster12016 ай бұрын
You may notice I often fly with both hands on the joystick. This is for two reasons: elevator is very pitch-sensitive and light, so this gives me more control. The ailerons are quite heavy in flight. I would say it is similar to the G103 I have flown-light elevator, heavy ailerons, just more so. The rudder is also very heavy and responds slowly, but once it starts to respond, it is a big response. It is a big rudder on the Phoebus.

I’m about 185cm. I had to move the rudder pedals all the way back, and rebuild the instrument panel to make sure the cut-outs for the legs were high enough that my legs didn’t hit it. But I fit without hitting my head on the canopy. With parachute, I’m about 90kg. My elbows are against the cockpit walls, which somewhat limits my arm movements, but I’m able to still move the joystick through its full range. It’s tight, but doable for me. Apparently, the effectiveness of the spoilers on the 15m version is very different than on the 17m version. Mine are VERY effective, and other A and B model owners have reported the same to me. On the 17m (C model)-not so much. Thus the need for the drogue chute.

Those top and bottom brakes caused so many leakage problems they had to set them back so far towards the trailing edge, they became ineffective especially at high speed. It’s such a shame fully sealed top fitted brakes hadn’t been developed when the Phoebus was built because in the air, it was very nice to fly, although I only flew the 17m version with about 90hrs on type.
Apparently, the effectiveness of the spoilers on the 15m version is very different than on the 17m version. Mine are VERY effective, and other A and B model owners have reported the same to me. On the 17m (C model)-not so much. Thus the need for the drogue chute.
Nice! I'm into my second syndicate, on the basis that I can't fly the glider all the time and it's nice to divide the bills in two when they arrive.
Very nice! That’s a good way to spread out the costs.
That is one interesting vario tone for sure. You're a better man than I am, I try and turn mine down pretty low on tow to reduce the distractions. Seems like I can hear a second vario as well. Are you running two?
There is the museum piece “Piep-Vario” that makes the harsh squeal, and then an audio beeping from XC Soar running on the Android Phone.
HAHAHAHAHAH like R2D2 was high on crack
Great to see that you keep this Plane working... Greetings from Mendig. What Place do you Fly?

Simply fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Adrian. It was fun putting the video together, but even better producing the footage. 😉
