    I just keep coming back and realizing how good your build is. I have built my servo driven ornithopter, but the some aluminum gears in the servos are failing. I need to address this issue but I'm looking for alternative designs as well and I found your channel. Did you make the aluminum servo horns?

    This is epic! I know the micro controller does it automatically, but for simplicity's sake do you think it's viable to just jam throttle up and down to achieve the flapping motion? (with increased weight/sensitivity of course)

    Thank you for doing this research! I find it strange that there is so little footage of the motorized ornithopters, there was video taken of the first airplane even 40 years earlier, so it's not as if the camera was not available. I'm looking forward to seeing a flying version of the model 😉

    some late thoughts. i find it unsatisfying when a 'thopter flies like it's in a continuous stall. that is why i think a 'thopter needs to have a variable cg; slaved to throttle. maybe try a more forward cg with a higher flap rate. i'm sure you know that the amount, and bias, of the slack in a membrane wing are major factors in how a wing will perform. maybe try more wing membrane tension with a higher flap rate. d

    👍 . I would love to see a more realistic wing stroke though. Folding in during the upstroke and pushing the wing forward during the downstroke. Seems fairly inefficient with the straight up and down. But I understand the complexity goes up a fair deal.

    Speed and torque for each of the three servos tested are shown in the video. The best servo for this ornithopter (of the three that were tested) was Hitec HSB-9360TH. It has a torque of 17 kg-cm and speed of 0.06 sec@60deg at 7.4 volts. As mentioned in the video, using a slower servo with more torque, HSB-9370TH, was not helpful. Additional information on the servos can be obtained from Hitec: hitecrcd.com/products/servos/digital ...or Servo City, which is also a good place to buy them from: www.servocity.com/servos

  • @OrnithopterZone1

    I never had any problem with the servos even after many flights. It is amazing, because they are very cheap servos. I rarely had servos quit working in other ornithopters. It is always cheap servos and I never had any problems with the Hitec brushless servos that I use in my larger ornithopters.

  • @OrnithopterZone1
    @OrnithopterZone12 ай бұрын

    It can carry a payload at least 100 grams. With all ornithopters there is not a particular weight limit but rather the flight characteristics will degrade gradually as more weight is added.

    Hi, Is the kit available for this Ornithopter? And do you think I would be able to add some flight controller to it? With a black box? I basically want to fly it and also analyze the data on the ground as well so do you think this would be able to take payload and would a COTS flight controller like Pixhawk 2 work on it?

  • @OrnithopterZone1
    @OrnithopterZone15 ай бұрын

    It can use a flight controller, and would be set up similar to a fixed wing airplane. There are 3 kits left, available from BirdKit.com, and then it will be out of production.

  • @revert2theStr8path
    @revert2theStr8path7 ай бұрын

    Hi, do you think this could be scaled down? I actually want something that flies like insects and something from which I can extract various accelerations and rotations data for analysis and study of insects. Do you think this could be scaled down and that I would be able to extract accelerations (linear and angular) from the online kit? Does it have any gyros etc?

  • @OrnithopterZone1
    @OrnithopterZone12 ай бұрын

    Gyros, flight recorders, etc. are readily available from RC aircraft suppliers, and can be used with any RC aircraft. Researchers have also used cameras on the ground to track the motion of ornithopters or other aircraft. That method might be best for your purposes as it can be used with a tiny ornithopter without adding weight. I cannot provide a scaled down version of the Crossbow 2, but ornithopters can be made very small. You can start with a toy like GoGoBird if you are not into building your own.

However, whenever I try to wind the crank up, the wings just won't flap no matter how much I wind it up. Also, I've found that it's sooo difficult to keep the wire hook in place that's supposed to connect the rubber band to the other end. The more that I wind up the crank, the more that the rubber band will be begin to pull it off from its secure place. What is it that I'm doing wrong?
