    I didn't realise until last week that we have a Mahonia plant at the front garden. Apart from jelly, what else can you do with the berries and you mentioned about the bark for medicinal uses, how do you make this? Maybe tincture? 😊😍

    The reason they are called Salmon Berry is because when they are the color of Salmon eggs they are the perfect ripeness to eat. Their most tastey time. Only recently in the last 20 years or so has the name been given the wrong meaning. Awesome video though

    They should have giving it a Native American name. Everything here has a European name but they live in America.

    Devils claw is also good for low back pain! With Cats Claw being used for upper body (neck and shoulders) pain relief. Or is it the otherway around )? Learned the value of these two herbs when finally was diagnosed with lyme disease after 25 years of being undiagnosed. Love your video's!!!

    Nice. Here in the UK we have Populus tremula, just called 'aspen'. Also clones and in modern times, not used for much. I wonder if the properties of timber and foliage are similar....

    Just came across one of these today, and spent about 15 minutes using google to figure out what it is. It's late summer now, but it's got some berries that will ripen up in a week or so.

    I enjoy planting Aspens in my development projects, clients love them, but over time, they tend to takeover landscaped areas with the horizontal root spread. Is there a method for preventing roots to spread in a particular direction? i.e. inserting a vertical membrane in the direction a person doesn't want the roots to spread?

  • @BotanywithBrit
    @BotanywithBrit Жыл бұрын

    oooh good question! I was going to say that I didn't think there was really any way to prevent the horizontal spread, but I did find this article that talks about barriers, although I can't vouch for it's accuracy: www.hunker.com/13428908/how-to-stop-aspen-roots-from-spreading

    I live in the city and I don't have deer, but I've had this plant in my yard for the 2nd winter now and something else is definitely eating it too. Birds/squirrels/racoons/rats maybe? I think it must be a combination of it staying green when a lot of other things have died/lost their leaves, but it also must just be super palatable. For me though only the greenery gets eaten and so far it's easily grown back.

    Thank you so much. I was thinking I had a good spot about 20 feet away from my septic tank but apparently that would be a bad idea… What a beautiful tree. I’m so glad I purchased 6 of them from a company in Wisconsin called “Chief River Nursery.” Their prices for trees are so much more affordable than everyone else I have found, I highly recommend it.

    I read that you should not touch foxgloves without wearing gloves. How are these poisonous flowers allowed to be sold to people as cut flowers? What if you handle food after touching the flowers or children touch them and put their fingers in their mouths. Gorgeous plants though.

    Very informative video, thank you. In my experience, I've found Quaking Aspen to be quite flammable. I cleared a couple acres with my dad back in the 90s and it was the only species where we didn't have to let the burn piles sit for a few months to dry out. If you got a good fire burning first, we could throw 6 foot long, 12 inch round logs in that were just cut down minutes earlier and they'd catch fire within a few minutes and nothing but ashes in a few hours.
