Julian Hutchings

Julian Hutchings

Hi,

I'm Julian.

I've been described as a curmudgeonly old fool, a boring old fart, a grumpy old boomer and the funniest guy on KZread and those are probably all fair descriptions. I make videos about cycling (mostly), movies, travel, reviews, comment, opinion, and anything else that interests me and might interest you.

Sometimes I upload regularly and sometimes I don't do anything for a few weeks - it depends on whether I think I have something to say.

If you enjoy my videos, please like, share and subscribe. I welcome any and all comments on my videos but...try and be kind and a bit witty. I try and respond to all sensible questions and genuine enquiries.

Please remember that my videos reflect my opinion and my opinion only.

With regard to equipment, most of my videos are made with:

Panasonic GH5 and Panasonic lenses.
Canon G7X Mkll
Panasonic GX8
GoPro Hero 7 Black
Rode video microphones

I doubt the name gravel bike originated in England XD. You can do Bike touring over many days without having to sleep in the wilds.

Hi Julian, Is it a 4 speed or 12 speed? Not that it makes any difference for the stopping mechanism, but I bought the 4 speed last year unknowing that the 12 should arrive this year… so just wondering which one you have and if you’re also missing a few gears 😊

I had to order all of the parts because it is very hard to get the hub rear wheel keep that in mind. brilliant bikes were amazing in doing the upgrade in about 30 minutes!!!

Cheap Shit! My stopdisc on my now much former than 2019 Superlight, below 9 kilo with mudguards, as a "Rainy Dane", is titanium with a flat carbon disc! And I use a strap to secure it, when folded, to keep it folded in my B&W bag. Finn. Denmark

Gah... just bruising? When proper mountain bikers crash their injuries look like the contents of a butcher's bin - blood and gore all over the place. It was very good of you Julian to make that short video while you were thinking about cleaning your rear derailleur (and that cable clamp in particular). You were about to clean your derailleur... weren't you? 😛

The 1980s 26" fully rigid mountain bikes were cool looking and actually not bad to ride on the road with smooth tires fitted . None of the stupid wide bars , discs and fully suspension stuff involved. Still use my DBR alloy deore equipped one when the fancy takes hold for a pretty satisfactory retro ride.

Julian, you're an inspiration to us all! I once aspired to be a magician, specializing in card tricks. I bought a bunch, got frustrated, gave up, and threw them in a closet. You have moved me to carry on! I just ordered 10 more tricks that I will toss in the closet along with the others until I am finally ready to realize my dream- couch to card magician! Thank you, Julian!

Julian MTB isn't for road cyclists. That's why we love it. Road cyclists are terrible at mountain biking. There's nothing funnier than a roadie riding a gentle green trail, bum in the saddle, arms stiff, feet clipped in, dragging the rear brake all the way to the bottom of a stream crossing, and dismounting and carrying their precious bike over the tiny trickle. MTB is our revenge for being consistently beaten up the hill by the roadies on a paved road, and all the civilization that well maintained pavement requires. Taxes and schedules and getting up early and being there on time. Give us a rutted animal path through a mountainside pasture and we MTBers are happy as livestock. In all seriousness, handlebars come extra wide because you're supposed to cut them down to what you prefer. And going OTB on a modern bike is a skills and body position issue, in your case due to years of road riding. I did the same when I started, and since I and my friends knew nothing and it was the dark ages, we kept doing it and thought crashing was just how MTB was done. But now in the 21st century, OTB is nothing a few lessons can't correct. A few names: Fluidride, Lee McCormack, Roxy Ride & Inspire.

You'll know of course that e-scooters are illegal except in certain gated cities, but eagerly waiting for the e-bike review ... e-brompton even. Dammit, I'm even looking at a Brompton now because of you, just so that I can jump on a train with one to justify my senior railcard. Most excellent rant btw.

Does this man ride with flat pedals and bare feet? Gadzooks he must be a well hard bastard 😲🤣 Your bike needs a front mudguard Mr Hutchings - nothing worse than having a still steaming dog egg splatter all over your face on a trail. Trying to ride without licking your lips is not a whole lot of fun either... Great stuff Julian!

But you DO want a mtb 😜 You don’t need mountains, rolling trails though the woods is awesome fun. Don’t get me wrong, mountains are next level fun, just got back from Canazei Italy. Stick with it Julian. Take a professional lesson to dial in your balance points and situational positioning. You’ll thank me. I’m 63 and mtb 4 to 5 days a week, 3 to 4 days in the winter (even more kit you’ll need to invest in) 🤣

Thanks for this very entertaining review. I remember as a bike mechanic working on one of those Moultons in the 80's which was built from Reynolds 531 tubing and was hugely impressed. Brompton's ion the other hand are heavy and horrible though very foldable.. There's a Ti Brompton now which removes the heavy though not the horrible

Don't get too excited about your new running/jogging career. It's actually very monotonous. Especially after mountain biking. Put some pinned platform pedals on your mtb (maybe you already have them, don't know) and you can ride using those shoes. You'll get good grip and they'll be great for rainy muddy conditions.

Decathlon do some good gear at very good prices - good job we haven't got a shop down here or I'd be in there every day spending a fortune. Are these running shoes road shoes though? Or trail shoes? Gravel Shoes, cross country shoes, down country shoes, mountain shoes, or enduro shoes? Are they tubeless? Now all you need are some Budgie Smugglers Julian (😲) and you can become one of those triathlete types...

🤣 I've heard that Tesla fans can be a bit evangelistic and idolise anything and everything that Musk geezer does. Having encountered a few silent EVs while out on my bike, I have decided that when I'm Prime Minister I'll make it law that all EVs, and hybrids when running on their batteries, must emit this sound kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5eJ2biFqJuxadY.html on a permanent loop. I think that's the most appropriate noise they can make quite frankly 😁

Hi Julian, what is missing in your review is the optional longer extender. It cost 10 Euro extra. It helps to put the bag more backwards, so your bag would not be stuck tied under your saddle. I would say, it could kill 90% of your complains about the AeroPack.
