    Looks good, I have a few questions. How far are your lettuce spaced apart? And is that 4" PVC at the end of the NFT channels? Did you use silicone or PVC cement to join the end caps and elbows? Thanks

  • @steveale0711
    @steveale0711Ай бұрын

    There are 18 holes in a 12’ channel. So they are about 8” apart down the channel. The drain pipe is 4” diameter. The channels can fit into the drain at different widths but most of the drain holes are on 6” spacing. The end caps are nsf pvc glued. We add some glue occasionally after cleaning to insure we don’t develop any pinhole or hairline crack leaks at the drain end cap. The 45 degree elbows are not glued on, they are just hand fitted. Thanks for following our channel, hope this answers all your questions.

    Just use white roofs instead they are way more effective at keeping the surface cold, then spraying water on a roof that is not white but it is another colour. Having white roofs keeps the temperature cooler because it reflects sunlight heat back to space.

    My only complaint has been with very fine round seeds. It likes to grind up kohlrabi seeds into a meal cracking each seed until 3-4 pieces! Not good hot germinating! It has performed flawlessly with corn, peas, carrots, buckwheat and rye…. It even handled home harvested carrot seeds that still had burrs on the seeds either no problems. I might try something like this.

    so just thinking about your modification.... What if you used 2 small nuts as jam nuts under the lid. That way you could set the friction loose on actual mechanism. Then you could just snug the peanut butter lid just enough to hold plate and it wouldn't be responsible in adding friction to the gear mechanism. Cool video

  • @steveale0711
    @steveale07117 ай бұрын

    @@aaronbaker-zn2xe I’ve used cups, no cups and taped my round 2” openings to allow a square Oasis cube no clearance for light. The tape to reduce to a square hole is problematic. The cubes tend to topple over if you bump the channel and it’s difficult to fish them back upright. The cups in the round holes block some light/algae growth but then you have to damage the roots to separate the cup at harvest. The cubes straight in the channel is cleanest but you trade off a little algae growth through the seedling stage. I have the cups so I use them mainly. But no cups works fine too.

    Rather than staking my main crop tomatoes this season in my greenhouses I tried a different technique mainly do to the lack of help. The yields were just as good and I saved a ton of work by not staking, tying and trellising. I did none of those. I did fertilize the same though. I laid old and cracked 1020 trays down in a triangle pattern under young tomato plants to keep tomatoes off the ground as they matured. That seemed to be enough to keep most of them from rotting as they normally would if they hit bare ground. I suspect weed cloth; IRT fabric, cardboard might have the same effect. Some strongly indeterminate varieties will need to be trellised but I avoided 99% of the laborious job and intend to do it again this season. I did not try it with cherry varieties. I've been running a CSA for over 31 years.
