All of the instruments in this seem really thought out, and the drums are super crunchy :) Still, sometimes the best music is made at a steady pace. I face a similar problem where if I put off a composition too long I lose any motivation to work on it, so maybe the best thing to do is to find a balance between working hard and taking breaks?

Why is the trough of the wave so smooth? Don’t dpcm waves need to go either one bit up or down?
@ttwtunesАй бұрын
The trough is smooth because the wave is "bumping" against the zero level :] All the bits in the flat parts are "down" bits, but the output level clamps at zero

@@ttwtunes oh neat
@robsterlobsterrАй бұрын
@@ttwtunes but what about the crest? Could it do the same?
@ttwtunesАй бұрын
@@robsterlobsterr Technically yes, but it really doesn't work well for pulse waves at all; the "slope" of the pulses starts to become a real problem if you try to increase the amplitude that much. It's a bit hard for me to explain why exactly, but it just doesn't work out. For what its worth, you could invert all the bits in these samples so that they bump against the maximum output level instead of the minimum. This doesn't significantly affect the sounds of the pulse waves themselves, but it does result in quieter triangle and noise channels (due to the NES's non-linear mixing) which could very well be useful in its own right.

BRO 2P VS IS AWESOME!!!!! How did you got to make so punchy drums in the Game Gear noise channel? This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!
@ttwtunes2 ай бұрын
Thank you! ^^ The snare was pretty easy; it's just the medium noise pitch with a simple decaying volume envelope, with no silent ticks or anything like that. The kick is a bit more involved; for the first tick, it uses the high noise pitch for a harsher attack, as the more "active" portion of the noise sequence gets to play briefly. After that, it switches to the low noise pitch, and while that does reset the noise sequence, you don't really notice the dull portion of the sound since it already began with a loud attack. I hope I explained that okay and didn't sound condescending- :]

@ttwtunes2 ай бұрын
@@OMundodosRetroGames Heh, thank you ^^ I only thought of it because I sometimes do something similar with noise kicks on NES :] In that case, it's not to compensate for a lackluster noise sequence, it's just to make the start of the kick sound punchier. The real difference is that, on NES, a simple low-pitched decaying noise sound actually works okay for a kick drum, unlike on most SN7s :P
