Very good channel ❤ thanks
Why isn't every law student listening to this?
thanks very much for this video. I'm an Australian and hope to transfer from Aus Biglaw (HSF/KWM/Allens) to US Biglaw after a few years. I just have one question - how far down the ladder will I be knocked down in terms of Cravath? For example - if I'm a 4th year lawyer in ECM or M&A at a top law firm such as HSF over here, and transition to any of the cravath scale biglaw firms in the US, will I be knocked down to 1st, 3rd, or stay at 4th? Thanks for your time.
Another great webinar! Thank you
There is the story of a lawyer who died at age 40. He came up to heaven and complained that he has a wife and children who need him back on earth. The angel replied: we looked at your billing records and according to that you are already 126 years old.
Sounds like his billable hours aged faster than he did!
Great presentation. I wish I had this information when I was starting out. Harrison tells it like it is.
Thanks! Harrison really knows how to cut to the chase.

Sorry you went to a doctor who graduated from Michigan law school? That might be the main reason things went wrong....
Yikes, no wonder the prescriptions were written in legal jargon!

I find this very insightful! I think this applies to every job as well. On a different topic, how much do you know about the legal profession in Canada and the differences from US law firms. Not really sure what I am asking for, just any knowledge on Canadian law would be greatly appreciated. Considering this as a career in my country.
Thank you! I'm glad you found it insightful. You're right, many of these principles can be applied to various professions. As for the legal profession in Canada compared to the US, there are several key differences in terms of education, practice, and regulation. I asked a question and the algorithms lead me here!

This was great advice, thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that you found the advice helpful.
This is 10/10 advice. I’m in a rough spot right now, haven’t worked in 1.5 years because I had to spend that time taking care of my dad full time before he died. Working on back into the workforce right now and this is much needed, if very tough, advice (can’t use your firm since I only have close to 1 yr experience, and worse still I want to transition from transactional work to lit). Thank you for posting this and sharing this info for free. You’re changing and improving a lot of attorney’s lives
Thank you for sharing your experience, and we're glad to hear that you found the advice helpful. Transitioning back into the workforce can indeed be challenging, especially after such a significant personal commitment. We're sorry to hear about your loss and the difficulties you've faced. Remember, every journey is unique, and it's important to prioritize self-care and resilience during times of transition. We wish you the best of luck as you navigate this process and pursue your career goals. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further support along the way.
So helpful, thank you
Thank you for the positive feedback!
“The thing I’m going to tell you about…they don’t have the quality I’ll tell you about…but you need the thing I’ll tell you about…” Why hide the ball? Frustrating and ineffective delivery of information.
It’s in the title. Don’t be a snob :) Nobody is dropping as much career helping truth as Mr. Barnes right now. Those with attention spans know what’s up.

That's a lot of words to say that firms hire those they can more easily exploit.
So grateful to have stumbled across your channel at the beginning of my career. Thank you!
"Know what you want to do" is the same kind of useless advice as "love yourself." Gee, why haven't I thought of that. Let me flip that "know yourself" switch. So stupid of me not to have done it. Of course when someone is strongly motivated it makes things easier. A bigger problem - one that you don't solve and the one that really needs solving - is how to find out what would be the area of interest that would be worth it to get involved in and develop over the long run. Those who are lucky enough to discover it with their first job do better than those who don't.
you can never lie on your resume as much as employers lie on their job descriptions. which aren't usually even job descriptions, they are people descriptions.
Litigators are exceptionally well at drinking.
I couldn't agree more. If I wanted to work in a tax firm, and I could show A grades in Income Tax, Corporate Tax, Tax Procedure, and Estate/Gift Tax, would they really care that I scored a D in Civil Procedure?
Another question regarding international students: due to the increase in US tuitions, native born US citizens have been attending universities abroad, even well regarded universities (Oxford, LSE, Amsterdam, etc.) and earning law degrees there, including LLMs to qualify for Bars in the UK/EU, frequently in Law & Finance, International Taxation, International Trade and Investment Law, European Competition Law, etc. Is there a path for these students to return to the US, earn an LLM, sit for the Bar, and earn positions working in their respective specialties? After earning multiple LLMs, a much less specialized, three year long, JD doesn't fit their needs. Is there a path for these attorneys, and what becomes of them?
I appreciate your content

I'm trying to hire for my law firm right now. Very well said on the specialization point. A resume showing some sort of specialization helps for picturing a specific role for their skills, rather than trying to guess how they might perform as a generalist.
Totally agree! Specialization in a resume can make the hiring process much smoother and give a clearer picture of how a candidate's skills align with the specific role you're looking to fill. Best of luck with your law firm hiring process!
I wish he'd be available to review a resume. For someone who gets into the law field late in life it's especially difficult to put together a resume that wouldn't be full of irrelevant information from their past careers.
Love it that these videos aren't the usual KZread 4-minute ADD-edited clips but real meaningful and informative dives into the subject matter
You mean, not a lot of "legal" immigration happening during covid.
But why is being in the background a good thing?
We appreciate your curiosity about the idea of being in the background. It's not necessarily about being invisible or unnoticed, but rather focusing on your own growth and contributions without getting caught up in workplace drama or distractions. It allows you to stay focused on your goals and excel in your own way. However, it's also important to strike a balance and find what works best for you in your specific situation. Thank you for engaging with the topic!
Great video. Super relevant information. I like the story at 1:24:10
Thank you so much for your positive feedback! We're delighted to hear that you found the video relevant and enjoyed the anecdotes. The importance of staying vigilant and adaptable in our roles is indeed a valuable lesson.
