Hi Andy. I shared your bike theft video on the Cycling UK Forum that I’m a member of. I’m hoping this may be responsible for some of your new subscribers. Nice bike Andy, you'll soon forget how the old one felt to ride. My do everything bike is a Giant, somewhat older -1995. Still going strong but it's much harder to get wheels and tyres also 8 speed cassettes. In a way it's forced you to update. I expect non availability of parts will force a change on me too. I know you don't do reviews but I hope you tell us your impressions after a few hundred miles.

Rather prescient of you to refer (at Corbridge) to the 4 quarters of a long ride and that the 3rd quarter was often the most challenging where people tend to quit! The 4x4s are absolutely trashing Blanchland Moors (once unspoilt trails in my youth). Navigating these trenches no doubt put your cleats to the test and ended up ripping one of them out. Hunstannsworth featured on a recent audax ride I took part in. That climb up and over those moors is challenging at the best of times, so impressive riding with ony one working cleat. I'm an old-school pedal, straps and toe-clips man, myself. Rarely had any problems with that side of things (altough, over the years, have seen plenty of cleat-related issues). Enjoying the journey

On my doorstep there, Andy (and so pleased to hear you wax lyrical about how lovely it is). It is. Often pass through Meldon on one of Andy Byrne's audaxes (normally on the way back to Ponteland, where most of his rides start). In addition to Arbeia, you were within spitting distance of Segedunum (Wallsend - yes, THAT WALL!). Corstopitum (or Corbridge, where you camped) was the site of a Roman Fort (literally just over the river from where you camped), town and bridge that connected Hadrian's Wall with the south via Dere Street (which crossed Stanegate) and Corbridge (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dere_Street). Maybe you can come back dressed as a Roman Centurian and cover the many, many Roman artifacts and roads in this part of the world. Enjoying this mini-series. When I was a lad and just started cycling I would often call in at the various churches out in Northumberland and sign the visitor books (and get warmed up!) Don't remember much sunshine!

Great video., but bitter sweet. Very enjoyable series. So sad to hear about the emergence of the purple poppy. Like you I never even knew it was a thing. Yes the toll on animals in both world wars was terrible. I know a lot of horses were killed whist in action. Shocking that the then governments told people to kill their pets. I am one of your new subscribers off the back of your video about the theft of your bike. YT recommended it to me. I couldn't help contrast the irony given you were so careful locking your bike at the campsite but it was then stolen when you were on the train. Cherish our churches and these Thankful Villages as when we are living under Sha rea they will have been destroyed or replaced with a mosque. Looking forward to your next video on your new bike.

A great holiday, shame about the bike. I'll be very interested to hear about the new bike. I've have a Dawes Super Galaxy from 1990. Now in retirement I've thought about a new bike, but I always get put off with all the know tech and how to maintain it on the road - hydraulics, leaking fuel, gearing that needs batteries etc....

  • @andysadventures3910

Thank James I've always stuck to simple to maintain for exactly the same reason. The wheels in particular are now confusing to put it mildly! 700c/28 inch which is also 29er...I think ...despite watching a few explainer videos which only confused me more! When I collect it from the shop I'll ask them exactly which size mudguards and pannier rack I need to order online 😊

Dear, oh dear! What a day! I'd never have put "shoe failure" high on my list of problems to mess up a tour - and its not an easy one to carry spares for when you're trying to keep weight down. And what a remote place for it to happen! I'm glad I've never used cleats so I ride in ordinary shoes which is one less thing to go wrong and easier to replace - but when cleats are what your used to I can see why you'd stick with them until this happens. But you have still gathered material for a nice video (the skies are lovely and the story is well told), and your mental resilience has kept you going through the setbacks. Well done! Looking forward to part 5!

When I changed racks a couple of years ago, it came with a couple of spare bolts that I now carry in my tool kit ;-). In any, I use ParkTool Threadlocker on all the bolts and have not had a loose bolt in years, although I still check them every morning on a tour. If you are going to use a thread locker, make sure it states that it can be removed using hand tools, otherwise you'll have a whole new set of problems.

Flats with cages is the way forward on mixed terrain. I've never had a problem with flats - cleats have wrecked 2 tours. You don't need to worry about competitive advantage from cleats when you are touring.

I like these visits to Thankful Villages a lot, a bit of touring and some interesting history. I've yet to visit the WW1 battlefields but fully intend to. I live in France and usually stop at memorials to WW1 and read the names of the fallen. It really makes you stop and think when you see the same surname repeatedly, whole families must have lost their men. Thanks for the video and sorry to hear about the loss of the bike. Getting another will give you a chance to change the set up but nothing will replace an old 'friend'.

Yes, bike theft is considered rather unimportant by the police - but is also impossible for them to police. We need a statutory compulsory system of bicycle registration and shops may only sell bikes with the registration number mentioned so it is checked against a national owner database.

Very enjoyable video. It must have been gutting to edit this video knowing that your bike is going to be stolen. What a rotten end to your tour. DJI are rumoured to be bringing out an Action 5 soon so maybe better to wait and get one of these or an Action 4 a bit cheaper? I'm going to be starting a tour soon and probably taking a few trains to get down to the south or sw coast from East Anglia. I generally sit with my bike on trains, but if not possible I use a D-lock. Used to lock it on the ECML when going up to Scotland when they had guards/post carriages with Oxford stands for bikes even though there were signs saying DO NOT LOCK YOUR BIKE to the stand, I did. Not their bike to lose. I believe those mail carriages have now gone and have stupid cubicles like the one you showed in your video. Have you been able to get sorted out with another bike yet?
