  Wikipedia : "Le chapeau chinois est un instrument de musique militaire, à percussion, également appelé bonnet chinois ou pavillon chinois. Son origine n'est pas encore parfaitement établie. Dans le Dictionnaire pratique et raisonné des instruments de musique anciens et modernes de A. Jacquot (1886), il est décrit comme un « instrument à percussion en cuivre, inventé par les Chinois. En anglais et en allemand on le nomme Halbmond ; on l’appelle aussi, en français, pavillon chinois. Le chapeau proprement dit, a la forme du toit d’une petite pagode, les grelots et les sonnettes sont suspendus au bord et à l’extrémité de différentes tiges de métal. Ce qui lui fait donner le nom de Halbmond ou demi-lune c’est qu’au-dessous du chapeau se trouve aussi un croissant ou demi-lune garnie de sonnettes. Le tout est supporté par un bâton tenu et agité en mesure, de bas en haut, par l’exécutant. On s’en sert dans les musiques d’Orient, et il fut en usage dans celles de France pendant un certain temps. Il ne figure plus dans notre pays que parmi les instruments de musées ou dans les collections d’amateurs de musique. Au Moyen Âge, on l’appelait tymbe-cembel, et, dès le XIIe siècle, Bombulum. » Il a notamment été utilisé pour la musique des régiments sous Napoléon Bonaparte. Il est encore utilisé par la Légion étrangère."

  March for the Turkish Ceremony (Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs) was written by Jean-Baptiste Lully in 1670. It is taken from the ninth comedy-ballet entitled « Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme » by the playwright Molière. Comedy-ballet is a combination of spoken comedies, singing, and dancing. This form was desired by king Louis XIV in order to sew together theater, music and dance without breaking the thread of the piece. Context: The King received the emissary of the Grand Turk represented by Suleiman Aga in 1669 but the diplomat's clumsiness and casualness turned into a caricature. It was then that the famous « Turkish ridiculous ballet » was born. The comedy-ballet is a veritable reservoir of the processes that Jean-Baptiste Lully will find in lyric tragedy. She is entirely instrumental and is intended to be danced. So it’s ballet music. To heighten the irony of this scene, the composer employs all the instruments at his disposal and uses also employs percussion with oriental sounds. The march is structured around two repeated musical phrases. From the first notes, everything is done to create a solemn character as the key of G minor, the dotted rhythms similar to opera overtures and supposed to represent the march of the Sun King. This colored piece also includes a small tessitura of which the repetitions offer a journey of exploration of the timbre in the composition. *Lucien*

  Lully was a gay Italian man, like Michelangelo and Da Vinci. This was a bit of a scandal at the time. He was also looked down upon by some because he was Italian.

  Lully's behaviour was a serious scandal because he was also a married man with children. It's why Louis XIV didn't invite him to perform Armide at Versailles.

  I remember studying Jean Baptiste Lully in music history class in college. I remember saying to my professor how much I enjoyed his compositions, and my teacher assured me that many other people like his works too!

  c'est le Roi qui avait demandé a Molière de lui écrire quelque Turquerie pour se moquer des Turcs, alors qu'il venait de recevoir en grande pompe à Versailles l'ambassadeur de l'empire Turc le Roi portait un manteau d'apparat truffé de nombreuses pierres précieuses pour épater l'ambassadeur, et ce dernier eut l'audace de lui dire que le cheval du grand Vizir portait plus de pierres précieuses que le manteau du Roi. évidemment le Roi n'apprécia guère la remarque, et demanda à Molière et à Lully, qui travaillaient encore ensemble à cette époque ,de composer quelque turquerie . merci donc à cet ambassadeur d'avoir permis à Lully d'écrire ce petit bijou.

  oui, j'ai oublié de préciser que la moquerie demandée par le Roi intervient juste après cette marche, et elle consiste en un échange de paroles en baragouinant un pseudo turc francisé. il faut se rappeler que le bourgeois gentilhomme est une comédie ballet.
