Sadly, global warming will bring an end to the ski industry within the next 30-40 years.

My favorite memory of skiing as a kid was always Cuchara. Always wanted to go back but never did. I wanted to take my kids this year since they were close to reopening but couldn't. If anyone knows of a connection in Cuchara I'd forever be grateful.

This video would be even better if the narrator could prononounce words properly. "Mountains" is not pronounced "mounnins". I think you've spent too much time hanging around Burger King or something.

The corporations got it all wrong. So when they go bankrupt they need to replant the areas back. Get rid if the chairlifts ect..

Having grown up in Summit County and recently moving to Huerfano County, it would be amazing to see this ski area thrive enough to sustain our local economy. Most importantly, Cuchara Ski Mountain needs to be opened for the failing education system in Huerfano County. The kids need a Ski Mountain. Programs.

I love this! I can't believe someone else is as interested in the history of ski mountains/resorts of the past as I am! I thought I was the only one. Thank you for this amazing video! I'm a ♦♦ skier from Massachusetts (skiing for 3 decades).

The Catskills went through this and are barely surviving. I remember sports stores with large ski departments and even some that solely catered to skiers, but now it's hard to find them. Maybe it's due to most being on line but the pickings are scarce. Only resort-style places still exist, ones that offer off-season activities and amenities for non-winter persons. Times changed and if you don't change with them you're gone. Ski resorts are here for one reason, making money and if money can't be made to pay the employees and keep the equipment safe then it's time, it has nothing to do with global warming it's money.

By the way, when you start a ski area during a cold polar oscillation, it will always seen like the planet is warming. It would have been better had the 50s-80s been during a warm cycle. Then they would have selected better areas. Of course people are emotionally driven and they love to find scape goats. Cheers!

Let’s get a team of dedicated snow mobiles to take tour groups up to hit these runs ! Could be an awesome time , maybe even build a towable sled for the snow mobiles that can carry 4-6 people per load

Anybody remember Ski Idlewild across from Winter Park CO ? One chair, one Poma and maybe a rope. A few of us lived in the abandoned lodge around 1989 as employee's of winter park nordic ski. We booted it up Idlewild to both ski and sled ride what was left all the time. Sadly, I heard it was turned over into houses / condo's and such several years later. I still have some ancient swag from Idle tucked away in a dusty box somewhere.

As a kid skiing in the late 50 -60's my parents would put on a bus in Denver and up to Loveland we went. Guide parking to noon , get lunch pass and lift ticket, ski rest of the day. Had friends in ski patrol ski in whiteouts we were often only ones on mountain. My best day was 21 runs top to bottom, Winter Park all on t-bars . The highest we ever paid for lift tickets 20 or so dollars. Good memories.

There is still a good group of men following their hearts to sustain a ski hill here at Cuchara. These men need support, I'm not sure how to help.

Wish I lived back in times of these iconic resorts. I’m heartbroken that prices are the way they are …. Skiing is my passion and the only hobby that’s kept me only wanting more!!! The mountains are my happy place… 💗 sad for most like myself who work work work just to ski a few times a year if that.

A few more memories of Berthoud.. 1967-68 summer, we were traveling to salt lake City. My dad noticed that the lift on Berthoud west side was open for rides. he took me up. It scared the shit out of me! fast forward to 1980 - We started snowboarding there. many of us were skiers in the mid 70's and knew Berthoud had the earliest snow. The trips to Berthoud became more frequent for snowboarding. We had been turned away at almost all of the ski areas. Berthoud met us with open arms. many "names " have ridden there BITD. Sime, Jake carpenter, The Pappas Brothers, world renown surfer Buzzy Kerbox and many others.

Just watched this and it really takes me back. We snowboarded many now defunct ski areas as a majority would not allow snowboards on the properties back in late 70's early 80's. I recall Berthoud being the first area to allow snowboards on the lifts. Geneva allowed us but it was very difficult to use the pomas. Pikes Peak let us ride there as well as Conquistador we had to prove to patrol that we knew how to turn and stop). Other than that we went backcountry (Loveland pass and The Professor) or some secret spots we could drive for our powder cravings. Also surprised no one picked up on the Geneva trails that spell out S K I. Fun stuff. Also forgot to mention Arapahoe East.

I can sympathize with the former Berthoud Patroller Bob who said the decommissioning broke his heart. Me too, after 26 years working at various small areas I gave it up. 30 years later I decided to take up skiing again. I worked at Eldora for 15 years and got a lifetime pass. My goal is to put that to good use.

I really liked this video UNTIL the comment at the end that man is causing global warming. NOT TRUE, just another political jab of inaccurate garbage. Please explain why our solar system of planets experiencing similar conditions and why my Ancestors, the Anasazi Natives moved out of southwest Colorado and New Mexico around 1100-1200 AD. I will enlighten you, it was extreme drought so the only scientific explanation must be due to Native Americans burning too much pine wood and sagebrush that clogged the atmosphere with CO2. Ancient cities now under the sea, Colorado and the Four Corners region were humid and tropical with palms and giant ferns among dinosaur activity back in the day. Synopsis: The world has always been in flux with weather conditions, never completely stable or new under the sun. I repeat, stop politicizing every goddam snowflake or raindrop that doesn't fall.
