    Surprising how much darker it got, I much prefer the tone of the unconditioned leather on this cut of B3. Is there a way to condition this jacket while maintaining most of the pre-conditioned colour?

  • @EnemyStep
    @EnemyStep18 күн бұрын

    The pre-conditioned jacket was quite dry, so any level of conditioning in these circumstances would darken it to some extent. Your best bet would be an all natural leather conditioning cream, rather than an oil. Apply it lightly to effected areas (or whole jacket if required) and assess and apply more if needed. The cream won't last as long as an oil, but if you want to maintain a lighter finish it simply comes at the cost of applying lighter conditioners more often.

    Just coming back after a year to say the jacket is still serving me extremely well! Was insane to see this video go from 4k views when I first bought my jacket to nearly 300k now! Really cool dude! My current girlfriend happens to be a big fan of Leon Kennedy (hasn't even played an RE game haha) and when I first showed her I had the jacket she went crazy. I also happen to already have a passing resemblence to Leon so I've always felt cool wearing it in general. It has also (more importantly) been there for me during the bitter british winters. Anyway, point is this is all thanks to you making the video a year ago now and I really appreciate that! I hope life has been treating you well since :)

    Em dezembro último eu entrei em uma loja de confecções luxuosas na praça ao lado do Parlamento em Oslo e vi uma jaqueta bomber de pele de ovelha como essa de preço correspondente á 7 mil dólares. A jaqueta é linda, fantástica, mas aqui no Brasil um trabalhador que recebe um salário mínimo tem que juntar mais de 30 meses de salário para poder comprar essa jaqueta. Como é possível uma coisa assim??.

    how often do you think this type of maintenance should be done do this type of jacket?

  • @EnemyStep
    @EnemyStep22 күн бұрын

    I'd say play it by ear. When it comes to leather it wears down with use, so keep an eye on it and when it dries hydrate as needed. You don't need much conditioner, so apply it in small amounts and only use what's needed. The more often you're willing to maintain it, the longer it will last and retain its condition.

    Hey, I have a question: Would you recommend using BOTH the Renapur Balsam _and_ the Redwing for the conditioning? Or two coats of either of these products? I saw how the Redwing darkened the jacket, however it did also look darkened after using the Renapur. Is that just because the jacket was still a bit damp from the initial coating? Thank you.

  • @EnemyStep

    Looking back I would go with the red wing natural conditioner. Any balms with wax are quite heavy, and don't saturate the leather as well. On a newer jacket a wax is more effective, but given how old the Schott is I'd rather get it oiled to prevent further damage from dehydration. The fatty oils will darken leather more than lighter oils, with Mink being one of the heavier ones. Just avoid anything with silicone or synthetic ingredients if you wish to follow my advice. Best of luck with the jacket!

    Hi, I was thinking of doing this restoration process with one of my grandpa's jackets, since it is his birthday in a couple of months. The jacket is fairly dry, but my biggest concern is the wool, which is tremendously aged and yellowed. Are there any tips for restoring it to make it softer and whiter? I know about the no rinse wash, but I'm unsure of it's strength. Thank you in advance, great video!

  • @EnemyStep
    @EnemyStep18 күн бұрын

    Depending on the age of the wool, it may be beyond saving I'm afraid. The good news is that the jackets were designed to have the wool removed and replaced, much like the soles of Goodyear welted shoes. If you can find a good tailor who would be wiling to replace the shearling, you could really give the jacket a second life! You can give the existing wool a wash and see how you get on. If you can't get it to a satisfactory state after 2-3 rinses, I'd advise having it replaced outright. Good luck!

    For thicker leathers such as the Schott, I'd opt for the mink oil / Natural Conditioner. It absorbed more evenly without clogging the pores too much. Mixtures with wax can provide greater water resistance, but you do lose the natural texture and feel of the leather itself. Go with what you can get hold of, but I'd recommend always going all natural 🙏

    You said at the end of the video that the leather felt soft and supple, but did you notice any sort of waxy upper layer? I used a similar treatment on a sheepskin jacket, and after drying for a week it still remained stiff and a bit plastic-y to the touch, so I ended up "undoing" the wax-conditioning and switched to a product called Chamberlains Leather Milk which is more of a liquid conditioner marketed for lamb and other soft leathers. Great content regardless!

  • @EnemyStep
    @EnemyStep8 ай бұрын

    My jacket was quite dry, so it absorbed all the conditioner I gave it. If you have oil/was remaining on the surface, you can give it a wipe. If you found the liquid conditioner gave a better result, fantastic! Softer leathers benefit from a gentler touch, so I'm glad it worked out 👍 Thank you for the feedback 🙏

    I'm vaguely interested in buying a Schott type b3 jacket, my only reservation is the sizing of the jacket(s). I am for instance 6 foot 2 ish and about 12.5 stone at my heaviest, does this equate to medium or a large sized jacket (if this helps my pea coat is a 40-41" chest). Lastly if I may, how water proof is the type b3 jacket ? Great video mate, the jacket looks badass.

  • @EnemyStep
    @EnemyStep8 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback 👍 I'm a 41" chest and the 40 fits me snug. I've mentioned it in other comments but with older or "vintage" clothing it can be looser or tighter than the listed measurements. Ideally get a listing which shows the dimensions with tape, or ask the seller to measure the garment. Real leather is porous, so it will absorb moisture if exposed for too long. This is why conditioning and treating jackets is so important. I always go with mink oil as it's the heaviest oil which blocks out most moisture, but you can use lighter oils if you're willing to recondition frequently. Hope this helps!

  • @EnemyStep

    @@joe12524 To be honest with you: I'd love it if my jacket fit at my waist. It's more of a style consideration, but I prefer when a jacket has a clean break with your waistline, as it follows the proportions of your body. For most people it will have to sit below the waist given how the chest and arms will fit, but it's not a bad thing for it to sit at your waist. I hope you're comfortable wearing it that way, because from my perspective you lucked out!

    Check if the steamer has settings denoted by material or temperature. Depending on how thick the lining is, you may end up steaming the leather, which will shrink it. Test a small area and see what happens, and go from there. For general cleaning steam is a great choice 👍
