Another tip. Building a debris hut. Works better if you first plie a big layer of leaves first then the grass straw that will cut down on the dust you mentioned. But you would need more sticks to support the leaves and then the grass straw over the leaves Works really well. Alot of straw for bedding then a layer of leaves, straw, leaves it will help alot with keeping the cold ground from leaching out your body heat. The hatch you made will suffice

I find if you pile enough debris on the shelter eventually you will get it to stay warm.valume and mass is the key

Great video! Curious about the different string materials. I've always heard not to use "fast flight" materials for recurves. Can you explain? Bowstrings are getting so expensive now and I have a small collection of recurves, so seriously considering making my own. It was a little hard to see what you were doing when you started twisting the strings together. I think I will have to watch again. Thanks.

Good question! Making your own strings is definitely cheaper so I would encourage anyone to go that route! A lot of older books say not to use fast flight or other low stretch string options however most recurve companies use low stretch stings now because of the improved performance in arrow speed. For a while they thought it would place too much shock on the tips and limbs but even a properly made self bow with a good tiller will not break because of a low stretch string. I have a few old fiberglass recurves, one being a Bear from the 50’s and none have had any problems, if your are concerned place more imbedded strings in the tips when you make them (or serving around the string ends) for more padding

With that tinder-dry grass all around, the shelter needs a NO SMOKING sign. A fire, of any kind for any purpose, would be a big risk with this. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

The fill number, indicates how the down will loft. So you will need more down at 650 fill to achieve the same warmth as 850 fill. A sleeping bag of 850 fill will make the sleeping bag lighter and more compressible than a sleeping bag of 650 fill with the same temperature rating. Unfortunately I life in a damp county, and the down collapses after just a few hours due to the damp in the atmosphere, and wake up cold even with a good bag of 850 fill. So I opted for Climashield apex synthetic insulation, and is surprisingly good, and is equally compact with a long dissipation rate, so I wake up still warm. I hope you can get a sponsor to donate one to you, I would love to hear your opinions. Great video buddy. ATB

The method that I use works with any cordage and does not require any "snap backs". With your left hand pinch the line about twelve inches from the end where you want your bowline loop. With your right hand, make a small loop by twisting the working line, next to your left hand clockwise. Your working end will now be about ten inches long. Pass the end up through the small loop and leave a loop about three inches in diameter. That loop will be the bowline loop. Now, pass the working end under the left side of the standing line and down through the small loop. Pinch the small end to the bowline loop and pull the standing line. Done. If you go the right side of the standing line instead of the left, the working end will be outside of the bowline loop which, as far as I know, is not a problem.

Your bowline does not work for me. There is no "snap" Nothing snaps. If I try it another way, I do get a bowline with the running end on the outside of the loop. Please modify your procedure in order to eliminate the snap back. Thank you.

Wouldn't it help by adding some weight on top of the shelter, like tree boughs? I'm thinking that the weight would seal those spots wherever the drafts are getting in.

man, uve been doing this for 3 days. U keep telling us "it works, its survival!", but it clearly doesnt work - u r cold, miserable, covered in dust and wake up all the time. With how much time u spent on this u couldve just built a bigger, more solid shelter and star a fire inside to be warm.

one thing he forgot to say...have you ever got up close to a herd of cows in winter...those beasts are as warm as furnaces...turning grass into heat, so snuggle up to a cow or make a cow sandwich...if you haven't got a cow or two, make use of all that grass and once you/ve tunnelled in, just munch, munch all night on the grass... munch, munch, you wont even notice you/re cold.
