Be The Village

Be The Village

Just a family who made the decision to open our home to children in foster care. We are authentic and passionate about changing the way the world sees the system and kids who are in care.

This is our journey becoming a foster family and our experiences with placement calls, placements, and the system.

Whitney (mom) is the primary creator. Darcy (7) likes to steal the show with silliness. Sawyer (4) has no idea what's going on.

As a child I was in multiple foster homes where it was a "rack em pack em and stack em" for the cash. No questions asked, you rocked the boat you were moved to a different home. Out of all the foster homes I was in there was only one family who showed some actual interest in us. You have to do what feels right for you but the children you have genuinely shown love for will not forget it for the rest of their lives.

It is completely wild to me that you even have to point out that you are not spanking the kids. Here in Germany, hitting your kids was outlawed in the 1990s.

It's understandable that you feel frustrated, but the county needs to prioritize cost when placing children. If an acceptable placement is available that costs less, they can't justify paying more.

You did the right thing. You have to ensure the safety of your children as a priority as well as the foster child.

We have had one placement for 2 years. In the end we were treated like the bad guys because we cared too much.

I was a foster parent for 1 year with one teenage boy. I BEGGED his social worker for help. I BEGGED for wraparound service. I BEGGED for respite. I was denied wraparound and respite. I got no help whatsoever. It’s unsustainable if the county provides you with no support.

With the Q&A please dont feel pressured to say anything youre not ready to say, I think most of us have figured out why youre in the “rebuilding” as you called it but we don’t need details if youre not ready or dont want to share them. If you are ready to share i would be interested in hearing how your fostering licence has been affected by this life change, did you need to recertification in anyway or was it just giving them notice that you alone would now be the primary care giver?

Glad it worked out to take the time to spend with your family, although it was more of a semi-vacation for you. 😊 I remember some summer beach vacations growing up (late 70's, 80's) where our extended family stayed in the same rental house, and it got pretty chaotic sometimes! 🌞🏖🌴

I dont know that I've heard Sawyer talk. In any case your a great mom and YOU know whats best for your family

Thank you for taking her in. We took in one of my high school students for six months during her family crisis and it was more expensive than I was expecting. She was 17 and I really wanted her to be able to get her high school diploma. You’re doing a good thing. I have four kids, ages 20 - 30 and they still require help and support. Kicking kids out at 18 because it’s some magical ‘adult’ age is one of the myriad of stupid things we do to them.

I understand you've taken in an adult, prior-foster-child, to live with you for a time. I get that you are emphasizing both they are an adult and (in another video/clip) they are still just 18. They still need help, guidance and support.

I have only had long placements and respite. I can say we are fully into a routine but reunification will be very hard after 2 years…. For everyone including extended family. Those emotions on top of my and of course most important… the child can be a lot to manage.

when i was in primary (elementary) school, our lunch was from 1:00-1:40. BUT! they always gave us an extra 10 minutes to eat at 12:50 so we could have that play time and not have to rush and stuff our faces full.

Between 18-21 young adults need to be transitioned to independence. A lot of parents in the US fail at this, because they are not able to transition to living with young adults. The rules of the home become the parents personal boundaries. I need to go to bed at midnight, and for my peace of mind, I need to know everyone is in and the doors are locked, so please be home by midnight. I don’t want to waste food, so please let me know if you are eating with me or with friends, so I don’t have to eat the same leftovers for a week. I will do your laundry for you today if you bring it to the laundry room, or you can do it yourself on Thursday after I finish my loads… With children we control their scheduled, with young adults they control their schedules within the boundaries of people they are responsible to - parents, employers, teachers, administrators, etc. The keys are respect and responsibility- if you don’t give them either, they are going to learn adulting the hard way.
