Love it, I’m going with some bold takes this year. Kovacevic had really good numbers on a terrible Montreal team and I like him a lot. Very tough. Pesce and Hamilton have played together and Pesce is comfortable on either side, Canes were just so stacked, he never needed to do it. Also, Hughes plays well with speedy players, but he needs size with him- in recent years, we haven’t found many that mesh well with him. I’d like to see Siegenthaler, Nemec and Kovacevic rotating in. Bratt and Hughes create some magic, but due to their size, have shown getting beaten down. I’d like to see a fast, net-front presence with him and have more of a 2A and 2B line combo. Bratt-Hischier-Meier is a true number 1 in my opinion that have all of the elements we need to win. I also think we have 7 D we can rotate nightly. I like MacDermid in as well just to help keep lines honest and kind of have an 11 forward even group with a situational MacDermid in there playing sub 10 mins. There’s always injuries and we can also count on our extras playing 50-60 games which I do in Foote abd Bastian. 1 Bratt-Hischier-Meier (maybe a top 5 line in NHL) 2 Cotter-Hughes-Mercer (Cotter bringing speed, physicality and net front allowing others to play their game) i can see cotter get 20 goals with Hughes Palat-Haula-Tatar (veteran depth scoring line that’s edgy and skilled ) Hughes/Bratt/Hischier (Hischier would move Lazar to wing) -Lazar-Noesen Can both score and bring physicality. Creates space for our most gifted offensive players. Pesce-Hamilton Hughes-Kovacevic Dillon-Nemec Siegenthaler (rotates in bottom 2 pairings) This would make us so balanced and hard to play against.. again to read easily Bratt-Hischier-Meier Cotter-Hughes-Mercer Palat-Haula-Tatar Hughes/Bratt/Hischier-Lazar-Noesen Pesce-Hamilton Hughes-Kovacevic Dillon-Nemec siegenthaler (D pairings can be put in a blender and disperse minutes) Markstrom Allen …i think as unconventional as this looks, would be a nightmare to match up with, as we have size, skill, speed and leadership throughout with no holes

I see a lot of fans complaining that NJ didn't acquire some hotshot superstar in the offseason and believe that the Devils are going to fail because of that. Honestly, that's already flawed thinking considering that having superstar players definitely does not automatically mean you're going to have success on the ice. The biggest thing for this team is how well they adjust to and play in Keefe's system. One of the things that also contributed to the Devils struggling towards the end of the 22/23 season and onwards into the 23/24 season was other teams figuring out Ruff's system and the young players not having the experience to adjust and the coaching itself not making the proper adjustments to counter how teams were playing against them. It's not all a matter of the players on the ice, coaching is going to be a key part of their success. I know that sounds very obvious, but it's often something that gets overlooked when fans are so focused on the makeup of the roster.

Agree, all star teams do not win cups or the Rangers would have gotten a bunch in the late 90's early 2000's and the Oilers and Leafs would be winning all the recent cups. The top 6 made it to the playoffs with Tatar, not that the off season is over since it is only July. Stefan Noesen can be slotted in the top 6 as needed if the other team is running Jack Hughes or Hischer. It is not fantasy hockey you need all roles to be good. Got tougher and sounder defensively which were the teams biggest weaknesses last season.

I disagree that the team is stacked. When you have to put bums like Palat & Tatar in the top 6. This offseason needed more emphasis on actual talent & less emphasis on size. Just brought in a bunch of slightly above average players because they are tall. I'm expected to believe that this is going to transform everything from the disaster we saw last season into a top contender? I don't think so. I would give Fitz a C grade for his work during the offseason. Lots of old & mediocre talent brought here. I'm not excited about seeing any of the new additions to be honest. Should have gotten a legit top 6 forward. He failed.

I love the additions, they've covered everything. As for the people saying we didn't get a top 6 forward, Devils can only spend so much without screwing themselves in the future. We have multiple guys who can crack top 6 as a complimentary winger. I mean when you play with guys like Hughes or Hischier, you'll be fine. Tatar, Cotter, Foote hell even Noesen could play up and down the line up if necessary. I'm so pumped for this year considering we have a new coach, a true starter and quality back up and some more guys who aren't afraid to be physical. Also Kovasevic coming in from Montreal is a REALLY nice add, he was nick named Honda Civic in Montreal for being cheap and reliable. He can push for a spot if the Devils wish to bench Nemec or Hughes for a few games and contribute right away physically.

I agree to a certain extent. Problem is the top 6 is soft as hell (Meier is the softest 225 pound man i have ever seen.) I believe the devils will never win with the Hughes girls, and a coach scared of benching them when they act like primadonna brats, is not going to work. Holtz was dumped for playing poor D when the Hughes brats were FAR worse and always given a free pass. Imagine being point a game players and being a minus 40-50 combined. they are useless and at worst a liability. Sorry.... Good podcast though. I enjoyed listening. Yet Luke can STINK up the ice for weeks at a time playing 20 minutes a game while having no business even being in the NHL. Luke was never benched once. These are the sort of changes that probably could have been made last season. I have lots of faith in Keefe with this group. It may be the most talented team from goaltending out he has coached and he has been very successful. Thats why im not alarmed by fitz not feeling the need to address the top 6. Lindy’s system with the goaltending and young defense going into last season was frankly really alarming. The injuries really exposed this and it was a nightmare. I think Fitz needed to do exactly this. But he definitely needs to keep his emotions in check and run it like a business. I think lindy had way too long of a leash.

Tatar as a replacement for Toffoli is an absolute disaster! NJ now has 2 over the hill washed up goalies, still no true number one defenseman since Dougie has always sucked defensively. The top 6 got worse. Fitz dished the two best forward prospects for a nonname AHLer and a potato-can can nobody 4th liner. The bottom 6 got more stout , yet no scoring. And the defense got filled with veteran goons. This offseason is one of the WORST I can remember for any supposed "win now" team Fitzgerald is garbage GM, always has been. Fitz shouldve been fired 3 seasons ago. Hearing any Fitzgerald press conference drains all confidence one would have in this team. The man is a clown who fails to expect & demand success. Nj next season will be a middling team , maybe a pkayoff team , but certainly not a true Cup contender.

Horrible trade!! This may be the worst move in the history of Devils management. There was no need to give up on two young prospects who have shown potential with another years experience/ growth in the off season and new coaches maybe we could have gotten them closer to their actual projection. Even if they didn’t fit at that point at least they would have gotten us more in return at the end of this year. You gave them both up when they aren’t taking up a large portion of the cap to get a fourth line player that you like because he hits? We can address that in free agency. And hitting physicality was coming to our line up with Foote Bastian healthy this year. Think if Marino gets us 2 2nds why couldn’t we have traded a 4/ 5th to get this kid from Vegas if you liked him so much? GTFOH. Trading Holtz makes no sense when you just traded Clarke another right shot forward who could have at least benefited from Holtz leaving. Do Fitz who do you have in mind for right shooting forwards? Necas ? Laine? Not realistic and would tie up cap far into the future with big money and years causing you problems when you need to sign Luke and Nemec. Or are you just impartial to right shot players? How about you trade players like Palat and Lazar tying up roster spots/ larger cap space to pick up guys like Henrique Zadorov Bertuzzi. I’m so mad I don’t care if you replaced Holtz with Stamkos because one has absolutely nothing to do with the other you should have gotten more in a trade with either of those players. The only thing I believe you did by making that trade is have everyone thinking you are a fool so they approach you for other trade ideas. Smh absolutely embarrassing making Holtz a scapegoat for YOUR inability to remove coach Ruff. Take accountability for your actions trade yourself to Vegas as GM for GM at least he knows how to manipulate the LTIR cap and take advantage of GMs picking their roster dry of prospects who can be better or used in other transactions. You need to do better!

Foote / Bastian healthy - that would be a first. Holtz couldnt make the Swdish national team, Brunette who coached Holtz didnt make any possible acceptable offer and Vegas non qualified Schmid. Take a deep breath

@@neilcecconi822 you made no point. Two young players that we didn’t have to move/ make a decision on were moved at this point in the year for 4th line center we could have traded a 7th for? Come on now. It provided very little cap space so it’s not that. It’s because Fitz was upset at his handling of Holtz and was tired of answering questions about him. As far as the national team not taking him they only go by what they see from the team he’s on and assume he isn’t ready. He had 16 goals with 9 mins of play averaged? We won’t get 16 goals from palat a season or lazar if we had him another 3 seasons. Others should be first to go and the player we got in return are a dime a dozen.

The Holtz trade FEELS like a waste, because he was such a high draft pick. But it's not, if you look at his actual play. I'm glad to hear Cotter has potential, comes cheap, and especially that he has speed AND physicality. We're still building a speed and skill team, I'm pretty sure. Hopefully someday I won't be be surprised by people's eagerness to cast blame and wallow in misery but ... the outrage, despair, and heavy drinking over Holtz has been something to see ... before we even sign any free agents. Sheesh.

This draft is really deep. At #10 an elite talent will definitely still be available to us. Last year going to shit may end up being for the best long term because we will likely acquire another young star. Let's consider a hypothetical last season in which Vanacek was just good enough in the regular season to get us to a first round playoff exit in which he played extremely well in a 7 game series loss. The organization maintains belief in him and then he shits the bed in 2024-25 while the rest of the team is another year more experienced and probably better. I prefer what really happened in which the bad season happens in 23-24 while our many young guys are undoubtedly not ready for prime time. Plus, this is a very rare draft to have so much elite talent. 2025's 10th overall pick will almost definitely not be as good a prospect as whomever we pick Friday night. I'm so excited for the draft.

The acquisition of Markstrom is similar in some ways to the NFL Patriots' acquisition of Jacoby Brissett. Both of these guys are short-term, veteran players who are much better than the awfulness that preceded them on their respective teams. Their teams will be better because of them. However, neither of them will lead their teams to championships. They are "bridges" to the actual championship-bringing player. In the case of the Pats, they're hoping that Drake Maye is that player. The Devils don't have a player currently under contract that Markstrom is the bridge to. That's still high on the "to-do" list of Fitzy, or should be. If Fitzy thinks that he's solved the goaltender problem for the Devs in anything but in a limited (make the playoffs, win a round or two), and short-term (two years) way, he's delusional. The danger here is that Fitzy is going to waste two more years in the Devs' talent window by fielding a team that clearly is not championship level because his goalie (a 35-36 year-old Markstrom) is not a championship-level goaltender. Plus, he's hurt the defense at the same time by dealing a late-blooming, young D-man with lots of promise. So, he's fixing one hole by making another. So, I'm not convinced that Fitzy's plan is any good. It'll depend on what he does from here. And where's that championship-level goalie? Ullmark might have been that guy, but he would have probably cost more than Bahl and a #1 pick. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Ullmark. I'm also glad Fitzy didn't go after Saros, who, this past season, has shown us what his limits are. He'd just be a slightly younger version of Markstrom.

I like the Markstrom deal. However, I feel like Bahl has more potential than most people seem to think. He's pretty young, and defensemen take more time to develop. Because of injuries and losing Graves and Severson, he had a lot more responsibility than he should have this year, just like Luke and Nemec. No he wasn't great, but played every game and still ended with +1 on a bad defensive team, where most everyone else was a minus.

Bahl is very soft imo for his size. I highly doubt that will change at this point in his career.

@@zookdog68 He's never had a really good vet mentor. He's been surrounded by soft, mediocre vets so he's had no good example of how to really play the position. He needs 1-2 physical, mean vets playing solid defense to toughen him up. The Devils are one of the softest teams in the NHL and ridding themselves of one of their marginal soft players doesn't help that much while your core star players are fancy skaters and not hockey players. We'll see how things turn out.

@@zookdog68 First of all, random fans on the internet calling ANY player in the NHL "soft" always seems super ironic to me. Second, "soft" is a pretty simpleminded metric to use in general. It doesn't mean anything. And third, even if you do judge Bahl by that relatively meaningless standard AND by this year alone, he was 2nd in hits and 2nd in blocked shots, neither of which seem like something a "soft" player is going to do. Other than that, you made a great point.
